Tour of Northern Europe Stage 4

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TONE/MG16_TONE_4_017.jpg

Who wants to ride the famous cobble sectors of Paris-Roubaix, but backwards? Today’s the day for the cobble specialists to take control of the race and pursue their winning chances while the puncheurs and time-trialists try to reduce their losses.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TONE/MG16_TONE_4_001.jpg

There’s a lot of interest in the break, but most attacks are silenced due to talented cobblists who are outsider favourites for the stage trying to be involved, finally 5 riders are allowed free of the pack:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Meyer
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vad_lat.png Liepins
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Ovechkin
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpu.png Dabkowski
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Lampaert

Particularly pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Lampaert is a surprisingly inclusion, given he’s still within 2 minutes of the GC lead and a talented cobblist.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TONE/MG16_TONE_4_002.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Lampaert wins both sprints, if you could call it that, given he’s the only one interested, in Saint Arnaud Les Eaux. And leads the break into the final 40km of rough cobbles with a 2 minute lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TONE/MG16_TONE_4_003.jpg

And as soon as the cobbles begin pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Lampaert ditches his companions in favour of a solo effort. The remainder of the break are caught almost immediately.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TONE/MG16_TONE_4_004.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Van Avermaet knows today he has to cause a lot of damage for the others, so he sets the pace on the cobbles despite having 2 teammates left and it’s only a matter of time before splits open up. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Pokerstars have three riders behind them pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Wisniowski, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Van Keirsbulck, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Boom are the best positioned behind them too.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TONE/MG16_TONE_4_005.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pnd.png Senechal, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/met.png Albert and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbh.png Thwaites hit the deck, although they were barely holding onto the pack at this point and will have trouble coming back now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TONE/MG16_TONE_4_006.jpg

There’s some proper carnage over the cobblestones. Favourites both for cobblestones and other terrains are spread out all over the route, the first group 19 seconds behind pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Lampaert contains:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Van Keirsbulck
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Burghardt
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Kluge
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Degenkolb
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Van Avermaet
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Gusev
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Stallaert
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png David
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Trentin
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Wisniowski
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Sinkeldam
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Vanspeybrouck
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Polnicky

With pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Van der Velde and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Jérôme chasing. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png Kristoff too was involved but had a puncture at the crucial moment and is now in a chasing group consisting of many other contenders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TONE/MG16_TONE_4_007.jpg

Without many riders willing to set the pace, the front group slows and the chase comes back, forming a group of 47 riders with 14km and 2 cobbled sectors left. The group is too big to give a full list of who’s here or missing, but pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Juul-Jensen and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd.png Kwiatkowski are the best two puncheurs involved and there are no time-trial specialists aside from pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Boom who is less of a specialist and more of an all-rounder, meaning that pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Coppel is missing and far down the road! Also not present are pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Blythe and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pnd.png Senechal of the best cobblists.

At the very front of the race, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Lampaert has used the slow in pace to extend his lead up to 44 seconds!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TONE/MG16_TONE_4_008.jpg

Over the next kilometre the group splits again, despite the roads being smooth again. The leading group of the split contains 22 riders, them being:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Van Keirsbulck
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Burghardt
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Kluge
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Degenkolb
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Van Avermaet
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Gusev
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Stallaert
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png David
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Trentin
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Wisniowski
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Sinkeldam
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Vanspeybrouck
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Polnicky
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Jérôme
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Kamyshev
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Van der Velde
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Bagdonas
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus.png Tsatevich
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus.png Altur
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/met.png Nolf
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpu.png Vanbilsen
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vsa.png Vanmarcke

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TONE/MG16_TONE_4_009.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Lampaert has 5km left of his epic ride but only a 30 second lead! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Van Avermaet paces in the pack with the hope of gaining time on the riders behind, especially pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Boom who will crucify him in the time trial and is in the chase group only 1 minute down.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TONE/MG16_TONE_4_010.jpg

Heartbreak! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Lampaert is caught with only4km left as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Vanspeybrouck realises he won’t win a sprint and takes advantage of the final cobbled sector to launch an attack! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Van Avermaet isn’t going to miss anything though and gets on his wheel, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Stallaert gets behind him and suddenly the whole group is on his wheel, neutralising the attack!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TONE/MG16_TONE_4_011.jpg

Some riders didn’t have the energy for an increase in pace though and many are shelled out the back, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Degenkolb finally cracks and must hope his teammate pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Kluge holds on in front to keep the leaders jersey within the team. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Wisniowski, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus.png Altur, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Kamyshev, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Van Keirsbulck, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Gusev and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus.png Tsatevich as some other good names who can no longer hold on.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TONE/MG16_TONE_4_012.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Van Avermaet decides it’s time to hit the detonator and nobody has the legs to object as he sets off for a solo final 2km, knowing every second gained is one he can lose tomorrow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TONE/MG16_TONE_4_013.jpg

The flamme Rouge for the Belgian! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Stallaert leads the sprint in the pack, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Kluge also kicks off with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Trentin in his wheel, knowing that he must lose less than 5 seconds to the Belgian to keep his lead!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TONE/MG16_TONE_4_014.jpg

There’s no catching pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Van Avermaet! But the fight for 2nd place is hotly contested! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Stallaert gives in as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Kluge still chases strongly with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Trentin still right behind him. The riders behind don’t look like they have much of a sprint in them, although pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Burghardt is doing something to keep with them!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TONE/MG16_TONE_4_015.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Van Avermaet achieves the win! Great ride by him today to get a serious buffer for the time trial tomorrow! No celebration from him even as he rides for every single second! Probably intensely worried about the organiser’s poor handling of time gaps so far.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TONE/MG16_TONE_4_016.jpg

Not far behind pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Kluge trumps pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Trentin in a fierce sprint! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Burghardt easily finishes 4th, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png David makes a late burst to finish ahead of a row of Belgians, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/met.png Nolf, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Stallaert, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vsa.png Vanmarcke and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpu.png Vanbilsen finish in that order and finally pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Vanspeybrouck in 10th, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Gusev somehow making a strong jump to finish on the back of this group.

In the end the entire top 11 is awarded the same time as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Van Avermaet, despite the clear gap, a shame for the winner, who is having some bad luck with how these are awarded, especially as it means pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Kluge keeps the leaders jersey by just 1 second! It’ll be hard to take it off him too, as he is a formidable time trialist and there’ll be only 1 hilly stage left to challenge him on.

The later groups however lose precious time:
Group pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Degenkolb +1’16
Group pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Boom and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Juul-Jensen +2’54

Most major puncheurs and time-trialists are at least 5 minutes behind and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Coppel loses almost 13 minutes.
