Tour of Northern Europe Stage 3
trekbmc
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TONE/MG16_TONE_3_016.jpg

Stage 3 is a proper Ardennes hilly stage, starting in the Netherlands and finishing in Belgium, many cobble specialists and time-trialists will fear big losses today, while others like pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Van Avermaet and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Coppel will be tentatively hopeful to secure some time on their rivals.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TONE/MG16_TONE_3_001.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Orange have been working hard to prevent anybody getting away and by the Côte de Gemmenich the pack is still together, allowing pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png Lunke to take full points ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd.png Okbamariam with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/btc.png Mannion finishing third.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TONE/MG16_TONE_3_002.jpg

After so much work in the pack, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Orange sees their leader pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Schreurs hit the deck coming over the climb, several riders drop back to facilitate his return to the pack. The rain has started too now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TONE/MG16_TONE_3_003.jpg

With pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Orange gone, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Festina and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Puma take up control of the peloton. They aren’t as serious though as they allow pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vad_uae.png Khalifa, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Bovenhuis and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pnd.png Fenn to escape. On La Gileppe the UAE champ takes maximum points, while the Brit has a flat tyre and has to chase back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TONE/MG16_TONE_3_004.jpg

With 60km left the rain takes its toll and a group of riders crash on the decent of the Col du Rasier. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pnd.png Lutsenko, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Meyer and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/met_rom.png Grosu are the biggest names involved. The crash splits the pack too, but with many big names on the wrong side of the split, they organise themselves quickly and return in good time. Except for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/met_rom.png Grosu who takes a long time to get up and his whole team drops back to help him. About a minute later another crash puts pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png Dyrnes behind with him too.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TONE/MG16_TONE_3_005.jpg

On every climb the result is the same, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vad_uae.png Khalifa first, then pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Bovenhuis and finally pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pnd.png Fenn, with the latter clearly showing wear, he finally returns to the pack on the 7th climb of the day, La Redoute. The UAE champ however looks to have secured the KOM jersey for the next couple stages at least. The break still boasts a 3 minute lead with 50km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TONE/MG16_TONE_3_006.jpg

The bunch puts the hammer down and the breaks lead disintegrates quickly, and with 30km left and still 4 climbs, it’s gone and they are swept up by the pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TONE/MG16_TONE_3_007.jpg

There’s an attack with 15km left on the Côte du Saint-Nicolas! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Claeys and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Juul-Jensen both know this is a day to strike early to gain as much time as possible, so there’s no waiting for the final ascent for them! And the Dane in particular should not be allowed any time! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/btc.png Martin also attempts to make the jump with them but lacks the acceleration to follow!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TONE/MG16_TONE_3_008.jpg

They build a lead fast and on the Côte d’Ans everybody is on panic stations! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Schreurs leads the pack in a frantic chase and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Van Avermaet is attentive on his wheel! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Kelderman is behind him with a teammate in pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Bevin, then some more surprising inclusions, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Degenkolb holds on for dear life and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pnd.png Senechal maintains involvement in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pnd.png Rowe and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pnd.png Lutsenko, who knocks shoulders with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Coppel!

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Stallaert is also there, so is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/btc.png Martin and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Boom a little further back, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif_aut.png Eibegger makes a quick acceleration to the front! Still 12km to go!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TONE/MG16_TONE_3_009.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Kelderman descends with speed and pulls the attack back to a still 140 rider peloton, despite many gaps threatening to open up on the climb!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TONE/MG16_TONE_3_010.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pnd.png Senechel is working on the front with 5km, left sacrificing himself for somebody, you’d think pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pnd.png Lutsenko, but the Kazakh has lost ground. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Degenkolb however, who almost lost out over the last climb, now positions himself perfectly in second wheel and smiles at the prospect of keeping him jersey, although he’ll have a tough time of it with favourites lining up behind him!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TONE/MG16_TONE_3_011.jpg

The Côte du Flémalle isn’t the toughest, 2.4km at 4.7% but positioning is important and at the base of it the riders bunch up with nobody quite willing to expend their energy! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Van Avermaet, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Trentin, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Juul-Jensen, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Kelderman, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Schreurs, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Coppel, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Stallaert and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd.png Kwiatkowski make up the front line with the other favourites behind them!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TONE/MG16_TONE_3_012.jpg

With 1.6km left we hit the steepest pitch! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Schreurs accelerates violently, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Kelderman files in behind him and the riders stretch into a line; pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Van Avermaet, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Coppel, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Boom, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Juul-Jensen, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Claeys, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Houle and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pnd.png Lutsenko, before the riders start to get more clumped together!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TONE/MG16_TONE_3_013.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Schreurs maintains his speed entering the final kilometre, and it’s all the riders can do to follow him! Although now some cracks do start to appear, most notably pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Coppel leaving just a wheel length gap, but it’s hard to tell what that means!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TONE/MG16_TONE_3_014.jpg

300 metres left and the pack is largely still together, which is good news for many bad news for others, there’s still a race to win though and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Schreurs has gapped pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Kelderman, who has pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Van Avermaet vying to steal time bonuses, and perhaps the stage off him!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/TONE/MG16_TONE_3_015.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Schreurs wins the stage! No celebration from him though, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Juul-Jensen performs some last minute dive to steal second from right under pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Kelderman’s nose, who was satisfied to hold off pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Van Avermaet, who, like pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Boom in 5th and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Coppel in 7th, will be disappointed in the lack of reward for their performances on adverse terrain. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pnd.png Lutsenko squeezes between those two for 6th place. While pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd.png Kwiatkowski, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Houle and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Claeys make up the rest of the top 10.

In the end the organisers declared a small gap between 44th and 45th as a 1’04 time loss for those on the wrong side of it, meaning a blow to quite a few cobblists behind.
