The final stage single-handedly awards the polka-dot jersey after no categorised climbs were scattered throughout the route in the first 3 stages. With 2 2nd category ones and 2 3rd category ones, it's quite likely that whoever is lucky enough to get in a break will top the rankings.
That said, the stage still is one for the sprinters. We have seen who is in the best shape, and simply put it's likely that once again it will be a head-to-head between Degenkolb and Swift, but anyone among the several top-tier sprinters here, on a good day, could also fight for the win.
One of the largest breaks we have seen this season, made up of 10 riders, is allowed to escape by the peloton.
Some great riders are in it too: Konrad, Schreurs, Dennis, Sinkeldam, Ovechkin, Fouquet, Eaton, Lunke, Fenn and Ruiz are all in the head of the race.
As expected of him when seeing his name in the break, Schreurs totally destroys the other riders in the first climb of the day and gets his first 10 points.
Sinkeldam, Konrad, Dennis and Ovechkin follow.
The Dutch puncheur expectedly does the same in the second 2nd category climb, as well. Schreurs takes 10 more points, while Dennis, Sinkeldam, Ovechkin and Konrad occupy the next 4 positions.
Schreurs has a margin of 6 points on Sinkeldam and 8 on Dennis in said ranking. With 130 kms to go, the pack is 6 minutes and a half behind the breakaway, after the clock even hit the 7 minutes mark.
Ruiz still hasn't made it back in the head of the race when the break hits the 1st TV sprint of the day, where Fenn is in the lead ahead of Ovechkin and Fouquet.
Fenn grabs 6 more points, 25 kms later, while the 2nd position is held by Eaton and the 3rd by Lunke. Ruiz has joined back the head of the race just a few kilometres before this 2nd intermediate sprint. With 60 to go, the main bunch still has a 3 minutes gap to bridge, which doesn't look hard.
8 kms later it's time for the 3rd categorised climb of the day, where once again it's Schreurs prevailing, and therefore arithmetically winning his polka-dot jersey. Ovechkin takes 4 points and Dennis 2.
Same story for the 4th KoM sprint of the day, where Schreurs takes 6 more points ahead of Dennis and Konrad. 40 kms to go, and the peloton now has 2'30" to trim down.
Fenn, Ruiz, Eaton, Lunke and Fouquet have been caught in the meantime, after getting dropped in the 3rd KoM point of today's stage, so it's now only 5 riders in the break.
With just less than 5 kms to go, Schreurs decides he's strong enough to attack, while the pack is only 30 seconds behind them.
With about 3500 metres to go, Sinkeldam, Ovechkin, Dennis and Konrad all get caught.
Schreurs is now alone in the front with about 25 seconds to defend on the group.
Looking at the pack from a higher perspective, one thing is sure: today's strong wind is mowing down its victims. No crashes have been reported, yet only about 60 riders make up today's main bunch with 3.5 kms to go.
Among the riders that are missing in the top positions, we have Zmorka, Howson, Van Poppel, Guardini, Kittel, Vlatos and Maksimov, but several others are not in the group either, pretty worryingly.
It's definitely looking like Schreurs will be caught before the finish line, and with 2 kms to go, the trains and leadouts situation is pretty clear too: Howard is in the best position as Vesely is still in front of him and going strong, while Sbaragli left Swift on his own and the Brit is now trying to chase down Howard and get on his wheel.
Roelandts, Cavendish and Coquard are also following Swift closely, while Degenkolb is on the left trying to find a position, but currently involuntarily blocked by Sbaragli, while RBC for Boivin are trying to make their way to the front.
Schreurs gets caught before the flamme rouge, and now it's looking like only a handful of riders will be able to contend today's stage, while the others are too far behind.
Vesely and Howard are still going strong, with Swift ready to sprint behind them, with Roelandts and Cavendish also in there.
Swift plays the surprise card on Vesely and Howard, who are as caught off guard as it gets and have very slim chances now.
Roelandts and Cavendish haven't given up just yet, either.
We'll soon find out whether Swift has gone too early or not: it looks like it's an all British head-to-head between him and Cavendish for the first 2 positions.
But Swift keeps his 1st position and takes a masterful victory!
Cavendish can't quite overtake him in the last metres but is still a good 2nd, as he holds off Roelandts, 3rd.
Degenkolb sprints from behind to grab 4th, while Boivin follows in 5th. Guarnieri is 6th after he holds off Boeckmans, who is almost overtaken by Rowe and Houle – 8th and 9th – on the line.
Vesely is 10th, and he definitely is more than bitter for having led out someone who couldn't even overtake him when the time was due.
Phinney takes 11th and keeps his green jersey, beating Ignatiev and Coppel on the line.
Fiedler follows in 14th, while Polanc is 15th ahead of Grosu, Stallaert and Aregger, who precedes a really, really absurdly underwhelming Howard, 19th.
All of this means that Phinney is officially the winner of 2016's Praha - Karlovy Vary - Praha!
