Stage 5 is an odd one and a hard one to predict, with its several ascents before the finish and the final 1 km @ 10% muur. It's likely that it won't be enough to make a visible impact on the GC, so we might expect attacks from further out, or a really hard race.
Favourites are the riders that have proven to be the best puncheurs in here, so the likes of Diggle, Yates, De Maar and Gonzalez Cortes, as well as obviously many others, spring to mind, but it's going to be one tense stage for everyone!
Yesterday was a successful day for a breakaway attempt, and clearly this leads other teams to think they can make it too! Bazzana, Prado, Yzeiraj, Contreras, Possoni and Schurter decide to go for it then, but today's route is not as favourable as yesterday's under that point of view, and not only because of the steep uphill finish.
Their gap doesn't get past the 4 minutes mark, but it fails to go down quickly as the puncheurs' teams hoped, as Spark really don't take their task of keeping the gap under control seriously and no one is smart enough to help them.
Prado decides to attack with a bit more than 10 kms to go and he immediately gets a good advantage on the rest of the break.
With not much until the final muur, the peloton is still 1 minute and a half behind them... could history repeat for a 2nd consecutive day?
The Mexican realises he is not strong enough to go the whole hog on his own and gets caught just a couple kilometers later, though.
The peloton is still trying to catch the riders at the front and especially Podium Ambition sort of trim their advantage down.
Yzeiraj's attacks as well and he actually seems to have made a much stronger impact, though 5 kms are long, especially when they culminate with an interminable last ascent.
Behind him, his 5 breakaway-mates are not taking turns as smoothly and seamlessly as they were doing a few kilometers ago, which certainly indicates weakness on their end.
Yzeiraj slows down a bit and gets joined by Bazzana ahead of the last, terrible kilometer, while the pack is 45 seconds behind the duo.
The other 4 members of today's breakaway eventually don't collaborate anymore and are finally absorbed by the rest of the peloton.
Bazzana definitely has an edge on Yzeiraj and it shows as soon as the Italian starts his sprint for the stage win.
Steensen, Kinney, Diggle and Yates approached the final climb in the first rows and are looking the best for either a 2nd place, should they at least catch Yzeiraj, or well, a podium.
With the length of the climb making it hard to create any gaps, the top GC men can be pretty calm and just make sure they don't get dropped, unless, that is, Steensen doesn't pull something magic on the rest of them.
Bazzana was perfect today, and he is not new to these kinds of tactically flawless victories: Britain 2015 anyone?
What a way for Ferrero to close their race after Navardauskas' bitterness of yesterday.
Diggle is the first of today's favourites and takes the runner-up's place, holding off Yates, Kinney and Steensen just narrowly.
No glory for Yzeiraj, who still snatches a nice 6th place as a highlight for Vivacom's otherwise pretty meagre race.
Ferrero places 3 other riders in the top 10, as Grivko, Walker and Pozzato respectively take 7th, 8th and 10th, with Favilli in 9th who interrupts the beautiful light blue wave.
Gavazzi is also 13th for the men in turquoise, behind Schurter and Thill, and ahead of Popkov and Yatsevich, that as 15th is now confirmed to have taken the overall classification here in Slovenia! This victory comes straight after his Denmark's domination, as well as several successes that came before then. Spark's gamble definitely paid off, we can maintain.
