A not overly hard hilly stage that should favour the best punchy sprinters in Slovenia with its 7 laps around a not very steep hilly circuit.
The best bets should therefore be riders of the calibre of Gavazzi, Geschke, Bole, Favilli, Canola, Alaphilippe or Navardauskas, but there's a chance that it might be not hard enough to drop riders similar to Nelson, so the pure sprinters that contended stage 1.
7 riders join each other to form today's strong break. Kanerva, Moulingui, Vanthourenhout, Vega, Venturini, Maccagli and Griffith will try to go as far as they can on their own.
They reach a maximum distance from the pack with about 100 kms to go, when the group led by Spark is nearly 7 minutes and a half back. News reach us that Navardauskas is trying to get back in the pack as he unfortunately fell.
Fast forward to about 10 kms to go since literally nothing has happened in the meantime! Griffith gets dropped up the last climb, where no one tried an attack because of Podium Ambition's very fast pace.
Only 6 riders are therefore left in the front with still about 50 seconds on the pack, and it won't be easy to recuperate all of that in not that much time. The pack is still made up of pretty much all the favourites, so it's looking pretty good for the sprinters if they can catch the break.
No, it doesn't look like that will happen. In fact, the riders in the front have been going so strong they have taken their gap on the main bunch to 1 minute.
Vanthourenhout and Venturini seem to be looking the best for a stage win, with Maccagli, Kanerva, Moulingui and Vega further behind.
Behind them, Podium Ambition still plan on leading out Nelson for the green jersey points and they are in the best position to do so, while Canola and Matthews only have a man to help them in the last kilometer and a half.
Colbrelli is looking to find the help of Fonzi 10 meters ahead of him or so, whereas the likes of Krieger, Geschke, Clarke and Krasnov are all on their town.
It's clearly an head to head between Venturini and Vanthourenhout, further in the front, it will come down to who has the more energies in order to throw their bikes in front of the other as they reach the finish line.
But it's Venturini who takes the win and after featuring in so many breaks throughout this year, I'm sure he'll be really, really delighted to have done so in such a way.
No luck for Vanthourenhout, who is a good 2nd despite having certainly spent more energies than everyone else in the last few kilometers.
Maccagli barely manages to keep Moulingui behind him and takes the 3rd place and the last 4 bonus seconds - that well, he won't really need anyway.
Vega snatches a 5th place, while Kanerva takes it really easy in the last 200 meters and still manages a 6th place.
In the fight for the 7th place, Colbrelli, Clarke, Krasnov, Gavazzi, Drucker, Matthews and Nelson seem to have the most chances, but several riders still have a shot at getting into today's top 10, for what it's worth.
Clarke holds off Krasnov, Gavazzi and Colbrelli for a spot in the first 10.
In 11th place follows Alaphilippe, along with Matthews, Manarelli, Drucker, Krieger, Favilli and Nelson, who really couldn't be bothered to actually sprint as he realised he couldn't contend the stage win.
No luck for Navardauskas, who is awarded a gap of 1'38" from the rest of the main bunch, and will therefore have to give up not only his 4th place in the GC, but also a top 10 as he's now 15th overall. That said, he gets to keep his green jersey for at least another day, as a really small consolation.
