Slovenie's opener is for sure an interesting one: it does feature a circuit the cyclists will ride 4 times where they will find 1 short, but really steep hill, that comes before a flat finish. That said, it's hard to imagine that it will make a meaningful influence on the race, considering how far from the finish it is: it would take some really courageous attacks or a really high tempo to make a difference and avoid a bunch sprint.
The top favourite should still be Nelson, but watch out for the likes of Scully, Docker or Mezgec that resist hills better, Krieger, Manarelli and Clarke, that are always dangerous sprinters, and finally some of the top punchy sprinters here such as Gavazzi, Geschke, Favilli and Bole.
3 riders break away quite courageously, with a strong wind blowing in their opposite direction. Their names are Venturini, Thaouta and Kasperkiewicz, and they immediately build a strong advantage on the pack.
They still hold a convincing advantage around the 80 kms to go mark, when the peloton, led by some of the sprinters' teams, has still 6 minutes to trim down, though it has to be said it had reached 9 minutes earlier in the race.
They finally get caught with about 4 kilometers to go, mostly thanks to Podium Ambition's efforts. More trains start forming soon after, while until the moment the only organised team was, in fact, Nelson's.
Not long before the flamme rouge. The wind is making everything a lot more confusing, with Nardin on the right leading out Boem - but it's likely he'll stop soon, as his work was done once he gave space to Yates and stepped aside. Yates is followed by Nelson and Alaphilippe, and on their wheels are Krasnov, and Fonzi a few meters back. The rest of the peloton either can't build a train, got blocked, or isn't strong enough to follow those riders.
[…missing screen here ffs…] The situation doesn't change much as the riders are now even closer to the finale. Alaphilippe is now escorting Nelson to the finish line, with the Australian that is just awaiting the moment his teammate backs off. Krasnov is however firm on his wheel, representing the biggest threat for Podium Ambition.
Behind the very first riders, it's Hankook that actually manages to form a train with Colbrelli getting led out by Fonzi and Uugunbayar, with Favilli, Clarke, Navardauskas and Tzortzakis in the whereabouts.
Just a few meters before the line, and Nelson has already left his leadout's wheel and has the win in the bag.
The fight for the 2nd place is probably a lot more exciting, with Krasnov just a few meters ahead of the peloton that caught him again, and he clearly is going a lot slower than the likes of Colbrelli, Favilli and Clarke.
And Nelson's perfect sprint culminates with a great win, that he acknowledges raising his arms to the air!
Colbrelli snatches a great 2nd place, holding off a good Clarke, Navardauskas, Krasnov, Krieger, Favilli and Docker, 8th.
Canola and Gavazzi are close between each other for the last 2 places in the top 10, while there's a big gap between the 10th and 11th, taken by Cano ahead of Drucker, Manarelli and Uugunbayar, who closes his day in 15th after a good leadout work for Colbrelli.
