La Tropicale Amissa Bongo - Stage 6
matt17br
One of the most recognizable stages of La Tropicale, today’s criterium starts off easy to then hit the 8-laps circuit that will lead the riders to the finish line. In the midst of each lap, they’ll have to face a really steep 500 meters climb, that averages a 10% slope.

Experience taught us that you never know what can happen in this kind of stage: with so many riders close to each other in the first spots of the GC, really anything can happen.

9 riders compose this stage race's very last breakaway. They are pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpm_gab.png Thaouta, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spb.png Cooper, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Contreras, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vdc.png Cerovic, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Montaguti, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Pibernik, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Bøchman, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Helwani and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Rybalkin are their names.

They immediately build a decent advantage on the bunch behind them, which however doesn't get up to further than 4 minutes and a half.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0063.jpg

The first categorised climb is reached by them with 71 kms to go and a gap of about 3'30" on the pack. At this point, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Contreras is leading ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Montaguti and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Pibernik. Just 5 kms later, they get past the 1st TV sprint of the day with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Pibernik being the sole to sprint for the points, followed by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vdc.png Cerovic and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Bøchman.

History almost repeats in the following KoM sprint, but this time pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Montaguti takes 5 points and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Contreras 3, whereas pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Pibernik grabs the 3rd place.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0064.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Pibernik keeps collecting green jersey points as he again sprints and snatches the 6 points destined for the TV sprints winner.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Contreras preceeds pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Bøchman for 2nd and 3rd place while with 40 kms to go the peloton is not much more than 2'30" behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0065.jpg

25 kms to go and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spb.png Cooper wins the last categorised climb of the race and takes home his 5 points, whilst pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Bøchman and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Contreras follow him in 2nd and 3rd, and 3 kms later it's again pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Pibernik trying to amass some sprint points, this time ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spb.png Cooper and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Contreras.

The Slovenian, this way, has momentarily climbed to the 8th place of the green jersey standings. 20 kms to go and just 1'20" divides the bunch from the breakaway now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0066.jpg

We're inside the last lap of today's criterium, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Montaguti attacks as soon as he approaches the short but incredibly steep cote characterizing the circuit.

He seems to have already gotten a good advantage on the other 8, but most importantly, he still holds a 1'20" lead on the main bunch. Only 8 kms to go now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0067.jpg

Everyone but pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Montaguti and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Pibernik, who tried to attack before the group could catch him, are now caught by the pack, led by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Kraftwerk's strong train.

However, with 2 kms to go and 1 minute to make up for to catch up with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Montaguti, it really doesn't seem likely that, once again, it will be the sprinters contending the stage, which is a big problem for everyone but pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Canola.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0068.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Pibernik is first caught by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpm.png Krieger, who is the first to start a sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0069.jpg

Behind him, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Stauff is trying his best to at least grab a 2nd place that could give him the chance to still take the GC in an unexpected turn of events - read, as long as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Canola and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Torckler get no more than 1 second back in time bonuses.

No less than pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Haavardsholm, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spr.png Salleh and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Krasnov are also in decent positions for a last day podium.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0070.jpg

Yet another break win in Gabon, and this time it's pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Montaguti denying the joy of the victory to a sprinter. He was well behind in the GC, if you were wondering, so no chance for him to make a meaningful impact under that point of view.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0071.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpm.png Krieger has a perfectly timed sprint to take 2nd, which means that pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Stauff, 3rd, has no chances to get a GC win at this point, but will at least seize pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Torckler's 2nd place thanks to better placements throughout the race, even though the 2 hold exactly the same time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0072.jpg

I'm pretty sure pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Stauff will at least be slightly relieved to hear pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Canola wouldn't have let him take the GC that easily, with the Italian securing his overall victory thanks to a 4th place.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spr.png Salleh started his race off really well, but then was pretty mediocre the rest of his race days. Today, he settles for 5th, good enough to at least hold off pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tvm.png Vingerling, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Haavardsholm, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Scully, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Martinez and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Docker, who rounds off the top 10 to conclude his best race of the season.
