La Tropicale Amissa Bongo - Stage 5
matt17br
The wind blows and boy does it blow today! The riders will have a hard time completing what all in all seemed like the easiest stage of La Tropicale, or at least they will suffer a lot more than they thought they would.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/5.png

A definitive break hasn't probably been formed yet as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vdc.png Yzeiraj leads everyone else when they reach the first 4th category climb of the day. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Kimmince takes 3 points and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Venturini 1.

Just a few kilometers later, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Venturini sprints in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Canola and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Kimmince for the 6 points of the first TV sprint of the 3 today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0050.jpg

About 10 kilometers after that, the situation stabilises and we can see quite a few riders currently in the front, most of whom have already been trying to do something in the last days: pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Gudsell, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Canola, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Venturini, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Kimmince, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Nommela, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vdc.png Yzeiraj and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpm.png Ben Youcef are the 7 of them.

They get past the second intermediate sprint of the day with only pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Canola sprinting and claiming the 6 points awarded to the 1st place. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vdc.png Yzeiraj and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpm.png Ben Youcef follow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0051.jpg

No one really feels like making an effort to improve their position in the KoM standings, so whoever was relaying at this point takes the last 4th category sprint of the day. In this case, it was pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Gudsell, followed by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vdc.png Yzeiraj and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Canola.

Later on, it's again pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Canola sprinting for the green jersey points ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Gudsell and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpm.png Ben Youcef. With 50 kms to go, the 7 in the front have an advantage of about 2'20" on the pack, currently led by the sprinters' teams; their lead never rose to more than 3 minutes because the peloton doesn't want to risk what happened in stage 3, considering how the wind is stronger than ever today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0052.jpg

You can currently notice how much of an impact today's wind is making on the race. Splits are everywhere, and not more than 30 riders are making up the main bunch, as it stands. However, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Docker is the only one in the GC top 10 to be outside of the first echelon, and digging further in the top 20, only pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Pibernik, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spb.png Rizza and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/frs.png Bazzana are nowhere to be seen, so not too much of a worry for most.

Meanwhile, even the break is losing and losing riders, as only 4 of them being left in the front with less than 20 kms to go: pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Canola, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Venturini, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpm.png Ben Youcef and on a lesser note pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Gudsell who is starting to fade away, too.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0053.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Canola decides to take advantage of the confused situation to escape. He's been one of the most active in the front, and with 15 kms to go and no real agreements among the riders in the front, he's smart to try just in case.

Just 2 kms later, he's already built an advantage of 30 seconds on pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpm.png Ben Youcef and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Venturini and of 50 seconds on the peloton, where 2 of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tvm.png TVM’s domestiques are taking over relaying duties.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0054.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpm.png Ben Youcef and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Venturini earlier on have gotten caught, and only pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Canola is left to be eaten up by the other 30 riders in the main group.

The Italian still holds a nice 35 seconds edge on them, but he'll struggle to keep it intact with still 12 kms ahead of him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0055.jpg

There are so few riders in the front, however, that no one even manages to keep the pace high enough to recuperate anything on pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Canola, that already got under the 5 kms to go banner with an even bigger lead on the peloton: he's now 1 minute in front, and it will be hard now for anyone to catch him before the line!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0056.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Canola is well past the flamme rouge and the 1st place is now gone, most likely.

That said, let's focus on the sprint for 2nd place. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Mezgec, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tvm.png Vingerling, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpm.png Krieger and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hpa.png Colbrelli were the quickest to start a sprint, but doing so as early as now represents a huge risk they decide to run.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0057.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Canola takes the victory thanks to a perfect tactical move! He'll be interested in seeing how far behind the others come after him, considering about 1 minute would be enough for him to wear tomorrow's leader jersey.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0058.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Stauff, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hpa.png Colbrelli, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tvm.png Vingerling, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpm.png Krieger and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Scully look like the best bets for a podium with a few meters from the line. Keep an eye on the stopwatch, though...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0059.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tvm.png Vingerling holds off pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpm.png Krieger, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hpa.png Colbrelli, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Stauff, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Scully and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/elt.png Fonseca to snatch the 2nd place, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png King and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Clarke being very close for 8th and 9th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0060.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Giaux rounds out the first 10 places, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/frs.png Mandri, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Mezgec and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/frs.png Pozzato closely behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0061.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Torckler is only just inside the top 15 behind pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Wurf and ahead of his teammate pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Magnusson, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Novardianto closes his stage in 18th behind pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Clifford.

The gap that has been awarded is as big as 36", which funnily is only just enough for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Canola to take the lead away from pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Torckler, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Stauff remains 3rd by gaining one place on pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Novardianto thanks to the bonus for his 5th place. This also makes it possible for MOL to now be leading the Teams standings. This race keeps surprising us, and just has one stage left to keep it going.
