La Tropicale Amissa Bongo - Stage 4
matt17br
Stage 4 features an interesting first half, with several steep cotes in quick succession, and a more flat second part. Even more than yesterday, a strong wind is present, and as we’ve seen, it could heavily affect the final results. That said, the pan-flat final kilometers will still advantage pure sprinters, who know that they will need to accumulate as much bonus time as possible in the next 3 stages if they want to threaten pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Torckler’s lead, or even the second place.

The first half of the stage is pretty tough, and 7 riders are going to face it together ahead of the peloton: they are pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Pibernik, back after yesterday's bitterness, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Mamykin, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vdc.png Yzeiraj, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spb.png Sebright, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Mraouni, the polka dot jersey holder, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpm.png Ben Youcef and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Gudsell.

They reach the first TV sprint of the day with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Pibernik outsprinting pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Mamykin and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpm.png Ben Youcef, with an advantage of 5 minutes on the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0036.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Pibernik is close, but it's pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Mraouni running away with the 5 points of the first 4th category KoM point of the day. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vdc.png Yzeiraj gets 1 point out of it.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0037.jpg

37 kms later, the riders face the 2nd categorised climb of the day, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpm.png Ben Youcef attacks earlier and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Mraouni can't glose the gap, settling for 3 points. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Pibernik is 3rd, getting 1 point anyway.

With exactly 100 kms to go, the peloton is 4'15" behind, after the maximum advantage had nearly surpassed the 8 minutes mark: Kraftwerk has this under control.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0038.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Pibernik is followed by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Mamykin and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Gudsell in the 2nd intermediate sprint of the day, while the next is claimed by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Mamykin ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Mraouni and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vdc.png Yzeiraj. After that, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Mamykin and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spb.png Sebright get dropped by the other 5 and caught by the pack, and the last sprint of the day is won by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Pibernik again, followed by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Gudsell and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpm.png Ben Youcef.

The peloton is not more than 30 seconds short of catching the 5 of them, with 25 kms to go. There's strong crosswinds blowing on the race, which could make it as interesting as yesterday.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0039.jpg

All the riders are slowly getting dropped in a way or another, and only pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Mraouni is left in the front on his own, with 18 kms to go, but don't expect him to last much longer.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0040.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png The Moroccan gets swallowed up by the pack with 12 kms to go, but his was a good effort nonetheless, especially considering how he’s going to increase his lead on everyone else in the KoM standings!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0041.jpg

The peloton has definitely slown down and you can just see it from staring at this picture. Will anyone try anything, perhaps? Less than 5 kms are left, it could be a good chance to unexpectedly snatch a win.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0042.jpg

Nothing is really moving. We're close to the flamme rouge, and a few sprinters may want to try and anticipate everyone else.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0043.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Krasnov, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Docker and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spb.png Rizza are the only ones really doing anything; this is starting to look like a waiting game, the one that the rest are playing: everyone is trying to delay their sprint as much as possible because of the wind, but those 3 might have made the right move if they can keep it up - which is not looking likely right now, with both pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Krasnov and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spb.png Rizza already sitting up.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0044.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Docker looks like he has made it with less than 50 meters until the line, but what about everyone else? What is happening behind?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0045.jpg

It's happening that pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Scully, on the left of your screens, is trying to go for the 2nd place, as are pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Dahlberg, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/frs.png Mandri, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Giaux, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Torckler, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Stauff, and others a few rows back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0046.jpg

Aaand pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Docker takes a quite odd victory! La Tropicale is literally being the turning point of what has been an unexplainably mediocre season for him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0047.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Scully is another who has often disappointed so far, but he holds off pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/frs.png Mandri, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Dahlberg, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/elt.png Fonseca and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Giaux today for the runner-up position.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0048.jpg

Quite importantly, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Torckler manages to finish ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Stauff, and therefore won't lose even a second from him, making the German's mission all the harder.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png King is 9th, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Drucker closes the top 10. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Bush is 11th ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/frs.png Pozzato, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Park, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/frs.png Bazzana, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hpa.png Colbrelli, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Krasnov and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Clarke. This is a huge hit for several sprinters that don't even enter the top 15 in today's stage, missing out on the ever important bonus time.
