La Tropicale Amissa Bongo - Stage 3
matt17br
At first glance a bland stage, one that could be quite interesting on a further look, thanks to the unpredictable finale that is offered by the presence of the quick succession of 2 climbs, that whilst are not steep at all, could represent a decent obstacle if paired with the strong wind that blows in these zones. Favourites for this should still be considered the sprinters, anyway, and you know their names by now.

5 good riders join each other to form today's break: pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Torckler, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpm.png Chérel, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/elt.png Ioannidis, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Novardianto and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Pibernik will try to go as far as possible today. They all contest the first TV sprint of the day, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Torckler who also is a good sprinter hodling off pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Novardianto and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Pibernik.

The maximum advantage of the 5 is reached with 136 to go, when a gap of 8 minutes and 18 seconds is indicated by Radio Tour, but now, with 100 to go, it has already gone down by 3 minutes thanks to the sprinters' teams effort.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0023.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Torckler also dominates the second intermediate sprint of the day with 66 to go, after a long gravel section. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Pibernik is 2nd and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Novardianto 3rd this time around. The 5 can count on a 3'40" advantage on the main bunch with most of the stage behind them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0024.jpg

Less than 5 kms to go and the break genuinely has quite a lot of chances to take the stage. At the end of an uphill section with slopes never going over 3-4%, they still nearly hold a 1 minute lead on the peloton, where no team apparently is taking over relaying duties.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0025.jpg

3 kms to go for the peloton, and there really aren't any trains, but just a few teams came prepared here with at least a lead-out for their captain. Unexpectedly, they are pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Kraftwerk with 3 men ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Stauff and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/frs.png Ferrero who haven't really organised themselves but have 4 of them in the front.

In the front, on the other hand, they are still going strong with a gap of over 35 seconds on the pack, which right now look impossible to make up for.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0026.jpg

Only 3 riders of the 5 composing the lead look able to contest the win right now: while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/elt.png Ioannidis and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Pibernik have no energies left, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpm.png Chérel is leading pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Torckler and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Novardianto out with the flamme rouge approaching.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0027.jpg

Behind, the peloton's relative calm is allowing pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Kraftwerk to form a perfect train, but they don't actually look like they're going strong, just that no one has the forces to take over, or try a finisseur attack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0028.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpm.png Chérel looks cooked, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Torckler seems to be having an easy ride to the win with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Novardianto not really threatening him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0029.jpg

The peloton going so slow was too good of an opportunity to pass up for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spr.png Salleh, who starts his sprint from further out than usual.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Mezgec and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/elt.png Fonseca are the first ones to try and stick with him, while behind them there's several riders in the front rows trying to make up for being caught off guard.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0030.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Torckler takes a fantastic win! He managed his energies perfectly, and rounded off a day where he swept two TV sprints with a win, too, which happens so so rarely.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Novardianto is 2nd, he just didn't have the power to contest the sprint with the much superior Australian punchy fast man.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0031.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spr.png Salleh is still going strong and no one gets close to him, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Mezgec and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/elt.png Fonseca are doing the same. The likes of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hpa.png Colbrelli, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Docker, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpm.png Krieger, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Stauff and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tvm.png Vingerling are getting close to them, however.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0032.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpm.png Chérel manages to hold on for 3rd! So the sprinters are currently fighting for a 4th place right now, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spr.png Salleh not looking really good anymore, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/elt.png Fonseca, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Stauff, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hpa.png Colbrelli and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Docker threatening him.

Most have run out of energy already because of how far from the finish they have started their sprint, and the wind is playing a role in all of this, too.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0033.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spr.png Salleh, in the end, is not overtaken by anyone and keeps his 4th place thanks to some good tactics.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/elt.png Fonseca is the closest to him, and takes a 5th place, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hpa.png Colbrelli 6th, followed by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Docker and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Stauff.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0034.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tvm.png Vingerling is 9th, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Clarke rounds off the top 10, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Giaux, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpm.png Krieger and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Mezgec right outside of it.

What people will be most interested in, however, is that splits have been awareded between pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Torckler, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Novardianto and everybody else, which means that the Australian now leads the GC, and the Indonesian is 2nd only 10" behind, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Stauff being the best sprinter in 3rd, 23 seconds behind, only 1 second ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spr.png Salleh, and 10 ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tvm.png Vingerling. The time bonuses in this race are huge, however, and it shouldn't take much for him to be dethroned by 1 of the favourites, or more, in the next 3 stages.
