La Tropicale Amissa Bongo - Stage 2
matt17br
Similarly to stage 1, today’s stage features a continuously rising final 50 kms, but it also is 55 kms shorter. 2 categorised climbs are included in the route, and we’ll see the first polka dot jersey assigned. Favourites remain the top sprinters here, specifically pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spr.png Salleh, who made a fantastic impression as did his train, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Stauff, who really was just as remarkable even if he did finish 5th.

Only 2 riders will form today's breakaway: pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Joeaar and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Mraouni. Several groups tried to chase them down, but the peloton always caught and absorbed the few brave men, and eventually everyone gave up.

The two of them get to the first TV sprint of the day with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Mraouni outsprinting pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Joeaar on these characteristic unpaved roads, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spb.png Pauwels taking the last 2 points from the peloton. That said, their advantage rarely ever gets over the 4 minutes mark, with the pack keeping them under control.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0013.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Mraouni gets his time right in the 2nd category climb sprint and he'll wear the polka dot jersey tomorrow. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spr.png Bohli is 3rd from the peloton.

Later on, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Joeaar takes revenge in the 4th category climb coming about 10 kms after, but that won't change the situation for the KoM standings having the Moroccan won the higher category climb, even if they're tied points wise; pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spr.png Ghani is 3rd from the peloton 4' back, with 65 kms to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0014.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Joeaar only just edges out his break companion in the 2nd and last TV sprint of the day. With 45 kms to go, the pack now led by Vivacom, is only 1'30" behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0015.jpg

The duo gets caught with 22 kms to go. Plenty of time for any kinds of attacks to be made then!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0016.jpg

No attacks to be seen, sadly. 3 kms to go, sprint trains start getting organised and Kraftwerk sure as hell came prepared today as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Stauff still has 3 men beside him. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spr.png Salleh on the other hand only has pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spr.png Manan left to help, while Isostar have 4 men in the front but pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Mezgec at least 20 meters behind.

The likes of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Clarke, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hpa.png Colbrelli, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tvm.png Vingerling, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Docker, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spb.png Rizza and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpm.png Krieger are all safely in the front rows, even if without teammates to help.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0017.jpg

Closer to the flamme rouge, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spr.png Manan is done with his job and lets pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spr.png Salleh off his wheel, in the very front: it seems like that has happened earlier than it should have, but then again, his teammate had been relaying like a madman for a couple of kilometers already. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Papok is on the Malaysian's wheel and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hpa.png Colbrelli is close to him.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Park on the other hand is trying to escort pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Stauff as close to the finish as he can so that pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Stauff can try and do as much as he can to catch up with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spr.png Salleh. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tvm.png Vingerling is on his right, while the likes of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Clarke, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spb.png Rizza, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Docker and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Mezgec are a few meters behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0018.jpg

Not long before the finish line and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tvm.png Vingerling comes up beside pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spr.png Salleh and overtakes him like he's done nothing. At this point, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Stauff and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Park look like they're sprinting each for their own's sake, with the German struggling to even get past his lead-out.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpm.png Krieger on the very left of the picture also is holding a decent speed and could still fight for a podium if not more.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0019.jpg

Showdown! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tvm.png Vingerling seems to have lost some of his speed in the last meters and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpm.png Krieger and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Stauff - who finally gains some traction as well - get worringly close to him! Worth fancying pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Docker's and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Mezgec's chances for a podium, too.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0020.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Stauff takes it with a totally crazy last few meters, with quite a convincing gap on pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Mezgec and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpm.png Krieger, 3rd! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tvm.png Vingerling, 4th, narrowly prevails over pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Docker, with a 5th place that is the highlight of his dull season so far.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0021.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Giaux outsprints pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spb.png Rizza, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Clarke, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hpa.png Colbrelli and the now former leader pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spr.png Salleh for 6th place. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Park ends up right outside the top 10 and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Papok is 12th.
