La Tropicale Amissa Bongo - Stage 1
matt17br
Tropicale’s opener features a mostly easy route, with a tendency to go up if even very slightly in the last 70 kms of this very long stage – 213 kms of length in the terrible heat of Gabon’s July. Something for the sprinters for sure anyway, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Stauff and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spr.png Salleh having the best chances thanks not only to their skills, but also to their team support.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/1.png

4 riders are going to be alone in the front for the most part of today's stage: pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vdc.png Yzeiraj, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Katrasnik, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Kimmince and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpm_gab.png Thaouta are their names, and the crowds are going crazy for the home rider and Gabonese National Champion!

The 4 of them reach the first TV sprint of the day with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vdc.png Yzeiraj claiming the 6 points in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Katrasnik and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpm_gab.png Thaouta.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0001.jpg

With exactly 130 kms to go and an advantage of 8 minutes and 21 seconds, the 4 of them get past the second intermediate sprint of the day with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Kimmince coming out on top this time around, followed by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vdc.png Yzeiraj and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Katrasnik.

Then, in the last green jersey sprint of the day, it's pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpm_gab.png Thaouta's chance to shine, too, with the home rider holding off pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Katrasnik and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vdc.png Yzeiraj, who remains leader of the points jersey standings - though that'll likely change after the stage is over. The peloton is now only 6 minutes behind, and is steadily trimming the gap down.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0002.jpg

Not really much happens from the 100 kms mark to the banner that indicates 10 kms to go. Except the distance shrinking and shrinking, to the point where it's now less than 1 minute. It should not be too much of an effort for the peloton - led by TVM, Hankook and Sauber - to take that back, but who knows!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0003.jpg

It's not too hard indeed, and with 7500 meters to go, the 4 get absorbed, giving time to the trains to organise decently.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0004.jpg

3 are the main trains with 4 kms to go: Hankook's for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hpa.png Colbrelli, followed by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Clarke, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpm.png Krieger and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/frs.png Gavazzi, Sauber's for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spr.png Salleh, followed by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/elt.png Fonseca, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Mezgec and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spb.png Rizza, and TVM's for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tvm.png Vingerling, followed by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/frs.png Pozzato and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Stauff, who finds himself in a not really ideal situation, being even outside of the picture with not much to go, in order to get further in the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0005.jpg

Sauber's train is looking like the most solid at the moment, but the riders that initally were on pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spr.png Salleh's wheel have decided to go earlier, and with earlier I mean, with quite a long way to go sprinting wise. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Clarke is being followed in his very own involuntary leadout by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpm.png Krieger, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Mezgec and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spb.png Rizza, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/frs.png Gavazzi decides to stay on the Malaysian's wheel.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hpa.png Colbrelli, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tvm.png Vingerling and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/elt.png Fonseca keep a good position in the first rows, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Stauff's chances as it is are basically 0, as he finds himself impossibly boxed.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0006.jpg

Not yet under the flamme rouge, it looks like it wasn't that vain of an attempt by those 4 riders, who are now leading the rest of the sprinters.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Clarke is soon going to get overtaken by the other 3 after leading the peloton for more than 300 meters now, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/frs.png Gavazzi is getting close to them and Sauber's Malaysians are really not.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0007.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spr.png Salleh is not delivered perfectly by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spr.png Manan, but he's still looking like the best placed for a victory, somehow. He's clearly going a lot faster than pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spb.png Rizza, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpm.png Krieger and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Mezgec, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/frs.png Gavazzi, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tvm.png Vingerling and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/elt.png Fonseca are also looking good for a podium.

If you look closely, in the right, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Stauff has somehow made his way to the front: wow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0008.jpg

With just a couple dozens meters to go, it looks like the top 2 positions are already decided, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spr.png Salleh looking on point for a win and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/elt.png Fonseca for the runner-up position, but who is going to take 3rd? At the moment, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hpa.png Colbrelli, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tvm.png Vingerling and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Stauff seem to be the most sensible answers.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0009.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spr.png Salleh grabs the win with an incredibly well-timed and powerful sprint! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/elt.png Fonseca claims 2nd thanks to an impressive job in jumping from a wheel to another.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0010.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tvm.png Vingerling, in the middle, wins a close sprint for the 3rd place, ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hpa.png Colbrelli and an unlucky pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Stauff, who could have looked at a much better achievement if only he found himself in the front with 3 to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bongo/PCM0011.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png King burns pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/frs.png Pozzato on the line for 6th, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Giaux close to them settles for 8th. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/frs.png Bazzana comes from behind to take 9th, closely ahead of a boxed pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Docker, who rounds off the top 10.

In the end, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spb.png Rizza, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Clarke, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpm.png Krieger, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Clarke, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/frs.png Gavazzi and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Mezgec all end up outside of the first 10 positions.
