Post Danmark Rundt - Stage 4
matt17br
Yet another pan-flat stage awaiting the riders at the start here in Sorø, but it’s the last one of this kind as they’ll be facing a GC-deciding 30 kms long time trial tomorrow. Today however, it’s only 111 flat kilometres for the riders to tackle. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tcr_crc.png Guillén, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/t3a.png Nelson and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/chi.png Drapac come here as favourites but considering how short it is, several more riders could have chances.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Denmark/4.png

Four riders break away from the pack as the peloton takes off: pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/chi.png De Haes, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spw.png Christie, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Doull and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Contreras will try to stay as far away from the main bunch for as long as possible.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Denmark/PCZ0042.jpg

Contreras is in front when the riders reach the first KoM sprint of the day. No one sprints for the points, but Doull is 2nd and De Haes 3rd; it's therefore now official that pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Venturini has won the polka dot jersey competition, unless something nasty happens to him!

When it's time for the first TV sprint of the day, Doull is the first to get past it, ahead of De Haes and Christie. With 75 kms to go, their advantage on the pack amounts to about 4 minutes, so the situation is definitely under control.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Denmark/PCZ0043.jpg

It's Doull relaying when the riders reach the 22 kms to go mark and the last intermediate sprint of the day. Just like before, De Haes and Christie are following him in 2nd and 3rd. The group is getting closer and closer thanks to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/t3a.png Podium Ambition and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/yas.png cycleYorkshire's pace and it's now only 1'20" dividing them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Denmark/PCZ0044.jpg

No leaf is moving today, yet a split happens between a smaller part of the peloton made up of mostly sprinters and their teams as well as GC leader pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/chi.png Kinney, and the rest of the riders, among which there also are most of the favourites for the GC. It shouldn't matter a lot as long as the advantage doesn't get over the 1 minute mark.

With 7 to go for the break, they still have an interesting advantage of about 50 seconds over the first 27 riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Denmark/PCZ0045.jpg

Some will be happy to see the gap has been closed between the first and the second part of the peloton. Good news for the GC riders, not quite for the sprinters' teams that surely realise they're not pushing anywhere near as hard as they should to catch the break, that with 5 to go is still 48" ahead...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Denmark/PCZ0046.jpg

The 4 in the break seem to be running out of energy, all of them. With just 2 kms to go, it looks like they're going to be caught, eventually, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/yas.png cycleYorkshire giving their all in the front to do so.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Denmark/PCZ0047.jpg

They get caught in the last 90° corner before the finish, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/nwb.png Nizzolo is the first to do so and he looks good for a victory. But so do pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spb.png Rizza, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lse.png Vanderaerden, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Mezgec, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png King and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/t3a.png Nelson behind him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Denmark/PCZ0048.jpg

Last few meters and it looks like it's going to be between the 3 in the front rows right now: pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/nwb.png Nizzolo holds a strong bike length advantage on both, but both pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spb.png Rizza and especially pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lse.png Vanderaerden seem to be reducing the gap pedal stroke by pedal stroke.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Denmark/PCZ0049.jpg

A lot happens just before the finish line though, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lse.png Vanderaerden with the best odds for a win and it seems like some might get in the mix in the final few meters: pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Mezgec still looks good for something like a 2nd place, just like pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png King and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/t3a.png Nelson do to catch a podium spot.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Denmark/PCZ0050.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lse.png Vanderaerden takes stage 4 with an absolutely flawless sprint on his side. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/nwb.png Nizzolo went too early and closes in 2nd, but he really can't be blamed, finding himself in a position where he just had to go all-in.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Mezgec is close to him in the last meters, but a 3rd place will have to do, just like pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png King who will have to settle for 4th after finding himself really boxed.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Denmark/PCZ0051.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spb.png Rizza can still keep his 5th place and he confirms himself as the biggest surprise so far, having no real team to help him out most of the time. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/t3a.png Nelson has a good sprint, but it isn't enough to finish it off with anything better than 6th, because of how many riders he found in front of himself after the last corner.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/yas.png Rowe follows in 7th, holding off pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/chi.png De Haes, who from the break still has enough energies to sprint and snatch an 8th place, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/nwb.png Abdallah and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Dahlberg, who rounds off today's top 10, which sees pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/nwb.png Trusov, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/chi.png Avila, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/chi.png Drapac and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Bole just outside.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Denmark/PCZ0052.jpg

The worst positioned/unluckiest today though has to be pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tcr_crc.png Guillén, who can't even finish ahead of his leadout pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tcr.png Cano, respectively 15th and 16th.
