Last day in Switzerland for the riders. This mountain stage is voluntarily similar to stage 2, and therefore the riders know what they are going to face today.
Besides the leader’s jersey, the races for both the KoM and Points jerseys are very open. If today’s favourite Schleck decides to go crazy, he can take home all of those 3. Dombrowski can still be a threat for Amador in the fight for the 2nd place, and Guldhammer is still very close to Morton, too. In theory, all positions in the top 20 are still very much undecided. So bring it on!
11 riders manage to escape from the pack as soon as the first climb is approached. Chiarello, Hoelgaard, Lane, De Greef, Eibegger, Van der Velde, Maesen, Dyball, Danacik, Gusev and Edet are the brave men making up today's break.
It's Chiarello taking on the 1st category climb with a perfectly timed sprint! Several riders had been trying to anticipate everyone else, but failing. The Brazilian precedes Maesen, Eibegger, De Greef and Hoelgaard.
Virtually, not much changes in the fight for the KoM jersey. At the top of the climb, the advantage of the lead on the pack is close to 6 minutes, but it will get to 8 minutes with 85 to go.
Dyball is in front of Lane and Van der Velde come the first TV sprint of the day, while in the second one the result is the same for the first two places but this time it's Gusev in 3rd. The advantage on the pack, with 20 to go and the riders about to start the final climb, consists of 1 minute and a half, and it's obviously Vesuvio trying to trim it down further.
Just like in the spookily similarly designed stage 2, Vesuvio gives it all in the first meters of the final climb and causes a noticeable split between a group of favourites and the rest. This time around, however, it's even more glaring: only 4 riders could resist to Suaza's and Frank Schleck’s acceleration, and they're the usual 4: Andy Schleck, Dombrowski, Amador and Morton.
But, similarly to stage 2, the 6 get closed in by the peloton a few kilometers later. Suaza couldn't keep going after a little while and Andy Schleck had to take on relaying duties too early, which he didn't seem to want to risk.
Meanwhile, the break starts to lose units, and Edet is the first to get dropped and caught by the pack, that is 1 minute and 20 seconds behind them with 14 kms to go.
More riders get dropped by the pace especially Chiarello is laying down and only 6 are left in front, with just a 30 seconds advantage on the group of 41 that Aru is pulling with 11 to go.
11 to go now, and Van der Velde launches a steady attack from the front and quickly gains a good advantage on the rest of them.
No one, at least from who was left of the original breakaway, will chase him. Chiarello, Maesen, De Greef, Dyball and Hoelgaard get caught once and for all.
Van der Velde’s attack lasts less than 1 km, as an acceleration by Dombrowski closes the gap he opened between him and peloton. The American was quite violent in his attempt too, and only Schleck, Amador and Guldhammer are left with him.
Schleck counterattacks and this looks like a definitive one too, with only Amador and Dombrowski initially being able to follow him, but then getting dropped themselves, with 9 to go.
Behind the 3, it's Guldhammer and a seemingly tired Morton leading the chase, 48" behind the leader, who looks good to also take the KoM jersey with the 1st category climb finish coming up soon.
And so he does, he's 1st at the top of the Aminana pass, taking 16 points and presumably the KoM jersey home, unless Arndt is better than 6th in the sprint.
Amador takes the 2nd place at the top ahead of chase-mate Dombrowski, the 2 are now 1 minute behind Schleck, which will be hella hard to take back at this point.
Guldhammer takes 8 points, Morton 6 and Van der Velde 4, which means that Schleck has mathematically won the KoM competition ahead of Arndt and Dombrowski!
Van den Broeck is currently 7th, 1 minute behind the riders in front of him.
It's then the group of 3 composed by Olivier, Arndt and Kolesnikov, as well as Quintana a few meters behind, we see arriving at the top of the climb.
Here's an updated look at how the top positions look like at the moment, with 6 kms to go for Schleck, who looks good for the stage win.
Guldhammer has caught both Amador and Dombrowski after a great effort in the short descent that came after the previous 1st category climb. This might mean he gains one position on Morton after all.
Andy Schleck takes a well-earned victory! No one could really be even close to him today, and he concludes his great Tour de Suisse on the highest note.
Amador cements his 2nd place in the GC with a 2nd place today, and so do the other 2 with their respective results today. Ironically, the first 4 positions today will likely turn out to be the first 4 in the GC at the end of the day. Or 5, if Morton finishes his day with a 5th place...
...which he does, ahead of a great Kolesnikov and a bitter Arndt, while Van den Broeck is 8th in front of a suprisingly good Van der Velde, who’s been in the break all day and still had energies to fight it out with the best.
Quintana will round off the top 10, with Olivier as 11th. Movistar duo of Warbasse and Chiarello follows, preceding Suaza, Kwiatkowski, Aru, König and the rest of the riders.
