Today’s hilly stage is going to dictate a very important part of what we should expect for the final GC: is it going to be something for the best puncheurs against the time thanks to a tough stage full of gaps, or will it be the time trialists actually fighting it out after a dull stage? What’s sure is that in both cases it’s hard to name a favourite, or jot down a list of them. Hategeka, Lejman, Othman and several others come here with solid chances, but no one actually stands out. Guess this will make this all the more unpredictable!
Tsubaki, Wu, De Haes and Tuulhangai are the four forming today's break. They immediately get a consistent advantage on the peloton.
De Haes dominates the first 3rd category KoM sprint of the day, ahead of Wu and Tuulhangai, and even manages to hold off the 3 of them on today's TV sprint, ahead of Tuulhangai and Wu.
With 85 kms to go, the advantage of the four on the peloton amounts to about 3 minutes and a half.
The four of them get caught with 39 to go, really close to the 2nd 3rd-category KoM sprint of the day.
It's then Venturini who improves his lead in the Polka Dot jersey standings thanks to a successful sprint, ahead of Schurter and Varga.
Lejman is the first to try something, with 15 kms to go in a downhill section leading to one of the steepest "cotes" of today's stage. Hategeka is quick to follow, as is Yatsevich (!), and Isostar's well organised train.
The Rwandan puncheur counter attacks in the midst of the climb, that features slopes close to 16%. He manages to get a good gap, but it's left to be seen whether he went too early or not.
Hategeka gets caught 5 kms later, and as soon as that happens, Zoidl takes advantage of the situation to try something on his own.
No one appears to be able to counter the Austrian, who enters the last lap of the final circuit with an advantage of 15 seconds on the rest of the peloton, but Kinney is certainly trying his best as the first of chasers.
All of a sudden, Zoidl seemingly loses all of his momentum, and Kinney catches him as soon as the 3 kms to go mark is reached.
Behind them, it's Gunman making a move away from the group of 24 that is chasing the 2. The Aussie riding in Fox Sports' colours is at least 10 seconds ahead of the rest.
The group behind him is led by Montaguti, followed by Reijnen, Handley and a strong presence of Isostar riders: behind Timmer, Bole and Mezgec there also is Tennant - which is great to hear for their GC chances. In the first positions Christian and Yatsevich, 2 of the favourites for the GC, are also found.
Kinney starts a strong sprint that Zoidl really doesn't seem able to keep up with, and the Austrian is even threatened by Gunman, who has caught him in the last kilometer.
Reijnen looks the best to take at least a 4th place from the pack, with Montaguti, Timmer and Bole immediately behind him.
Kinney has been perfect today: he has proven that stages like today's need not only good legs and talent to be won, but also a strong tactical sense. Zoidl in the end manages to snatch a second place after a courageous attack, and Gunman is 3rd.
Reijnen's sprint is a lot better than everyone else's in the pack, and not only does he take 4th, he also does so with a large gap - which will likely be awarded too.
Timmer, Bole and Montaguti are seriously close to each other, but in the end it's the 2 Isostar riders occupying 5th and 6th, while the Italian has to settle for 7th.
Yatsevich must be quite impressed with how well he did today, and it's especially important for his GC chances. He's 8th for the day, ahead of Milan and Handley, who rounds off the top 10.
Funnily, he is preceded in crossing the line by lapped Spark's rider Sue – who will have to do so another time before he can join his teammates in the team bus.
Right outside the top 10 is Othman in 11th, Chaoufi, Tennant, Hugentobler, Haavardsholm, Hategeka, top TTist Christian and a pretty underwhelming Lejman.
