Just like in the first stage, the sprinters are favourites to win today’s stage. This one, however, offers at least a more diverse route, with a few actual slopes, compared to the pancake that was yesterday. From what we have seen, no one is unbeatable and it’s hard to put any rider(s) above everyone else. Nonetheless, Guillén, Nelson, Drapac and Nizzolo remain the names to watch out for.
Today's break will be made up of 3 riders: Venturini, Perry and Tuulhangai.
The 3 fight the first TV sprint out, and Tuulhangai, who is actually a good sprinter, takes it ahead of Venturini. Their advantage meanwhile keeps rising, and with 130 kms to go it has reached 8 minutes and a half, which could begin to be worrisome.
Venturini bags the first 4th category sprint of the day ahead of Tuulhangai. With 95 to go, the gap has been trimmed down to just 4 minutes thanks to Chiquita's efforts.
As it starts to rain quite heavily, it's again Tuulhangai-Venturini-Perry in the last intermediate sprint of the day, with 50 to go. The pack has gotten as close as 1 minute and a half behind, now, so it doesn't look likely they'll go the whole hog.
Perry gets dropped by the other 2 close to the last KoM sprint of the day; he then proceeds to get caught by the pack with 18 to go.
Venturini also takes the 2nd KoM sprint of the day, and is sure to wear the polka dot jersey tomorrow. Tuulanhgai is 2nd again, but is soon caught by the peloton as well.
Shortly after the same happens to Venturini, so the situation now sees a compact group again. 12 kms to go and cycleYorkshire's entire train is laying down a very fast pace.
3 kms to go and we can see most trains getting formed. Podium Ambition's for Nelson and cycleYorkshire's for Rowe seem the best positioned, but Kasperkiewicz is taking Guillen to the front, too.
Other riders in the first positions include leader Drapac, Rizza, Vanderaerden, Von Hoff, King and Mezgec.
Nelson can't get it wrong today, with Podium Ambition having in Alaphilippe and Ewan 2 riders in the front with about 1 km to go. Drapac, however, is glued to Nelson's wheel, just like Rizza on Rowe's.
Just one last turn for the riders, who safely got past the flamme rouge, and now have less than 300 meters to go until they can cross the finish line. Nelson isn't really following Ewan, they're basically sprinting each for their own sake. As for the others, Guillén, Rizza, Drapac and Vanderaerden are all looking in a good position to overtake the Podium Ambition guys.
Nelson seems to have started his sprint with a good timing and is in front with just a few meters to go. Guillén seems to be the only one who could threaten his win, while Vanderaerden and Drapac seem to be the best bets for a 3rd place.
Guillén was too late to burn Nelson on the line, and so it's the Aussie taking a nice, close win! Vanderaerden and Drapac are also very close to each other, but it's the Belgian ahead for a matter of a few centimetres.
King takes a very good 5th in front of Mezgec, Rizza, Rowe, Von Hoff and Ewan, who rounds off the top 10.
Other riders are quite a lot of meters behind, and they're actually leadouts of some of the riders in the top positions: Alaphilippe is 11th, Brammeier 12th, Murray 13th and Bole 14th. It will be interesting to see whether splits are awarded or not.
...which they aren't, the officials decide there was not enough distance between Ewan’s and Alaphilippe's wheels to consider them.
