Tour de Suisse - Stage 8
matt17br
The queen stage is upon us! This stage alone is definitely going to shake up the GC and if you don’t feel good today, you might have to say goodbye to whatever you had achieved in the days before. It’s also expected to see several riders going either outside the time limit or not finishing.

3 long, steep climbs, all being about 20 kms long with average slopes always close to the 8%. The final, however, is downhill, which makes it all more exciting, considering the riders will have to move earlier.

Favourites for today, as far as what we’ve seen so far, have to be pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vsa_world.png Schleck and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pnd.png Dombrowski, but pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ubs.png Amador will want to defend his GC lead, too, just like pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Morton, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm_den.png Guldhammer and many other climbers will try to at least take a stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Suisse/8.png

It's not been long since the riders have taken off, and the Susten Pass is already making things interesting. The longest climb of the day sees 3 great climbers in pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Arndt, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png Galta and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Cink advantaging themselves over the peloton, that halfway through the climb is composed of only 70 units. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Gusev was originally in the break attempt, but got dropped shortly after the climb started.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Suisse/PCM0124.jpg

Arndt is first at the top of the first HC climb of the day, in front of Galta and Cink, who got dropped in the last meters but will get back in the lead in the following descent.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Suisse/PCM0125.jpg

Not much is happening yet, and at the top of the second HC climb of the day, it's now Galta taking the most points, ahead of course of Arndt and Cink.

The Czech is in the same situation as earlier on, except this time he's not a few meters behind but actually 2 minutes and a half, so it will be hard for him to get back in the head.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Suisse/PCM0126.jpg

Meanwhile, 4 riders get out of the main group that is now 7 minutes behind with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ubs.png UBS taking up relaying duties. Their names are pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Boily, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png La Lavandier, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Kangert and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Geniez. With 2 kms until the end of the climb, their gap from pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png Galta and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Arndt is over 4 minutes and a half.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Suisse/PCM0127.jpg

Boily had a successful attack at the top of the last mountain pass, and with the last climb of the day - the hardest one arguably - about to come up, he holds an advantage of 1 minute or so on the other 3.

He also has the same time to recuperate from Cink, who hasn't caught up with the leaders yet, either, and doubtfully will.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Suisse/PCM0128.jpg

This is the moment when, with 31 to go and 7 kms yet to be climbed, Boily catches up with Cink - which doesn't mean much stage win-wise, considering the 2 leaders have a 3 minutes and a half advantage on both of them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Suisse/PCM0129.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vsa_world.png Andy Schleck launches a huge attack from far out, 30 kms to go for the peloton exactly. No one is able to follow the acceleration of the World Champion, which is what matters most, since most of us should know by now what happens when Schleck gets any kind of advantage on an uphill section.

The World Champion likely won't fight for the victory, but he'll certainly try to gain as much time as possible on his opponents.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Suisse/PCM0130.jpg

It might be a bit too late, but 1 km later pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pnd.png Josh Dombrowski understands he has to go on his own if he wants to catch the best climber in the world - who is already 1 minute ahead of him, and more than 2 minutes in front of the rest of the favourites' group. Even in this case, no one follows.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Suisse/PCM0131.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vsa_world.png Schleck continues his quest by catching pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Cink and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Boily even before pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Kangert and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png La Lavandier have the chance to do so.

Before then, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Geniez had gotten dropped, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pnd.png Dombrowski had caught up with him, dropping him as well shortly after. The American is not making up any terrain compared to Schleck.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Suisse/PCM0132.jpg

Dombrowski catches Boily, Cink and Kangert, after having dropped La Lavandier, and the gap from Schleck starts to stabilise.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Suisse/PCM0133.jpg

Further in the front, news reach pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Arndt that pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vsa_world.png Schleck is getting worryingly close - "just" 4 minutes separate him from the lead with 25 to go - and decides to increase the pace, which leads to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png Galta getting dropped pretty quickly.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Suisse/PCM0134.jpg

Things are moving in the pack as well, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm_den.png Guldhammer tries a move that causes some selection. The Danish escapes from a group where pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Morton is pulling alone for some time now. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ubs.png Amador quite clearly can't help him more than that much, and sits on his wheel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Suisse/PCM0135.jpg

The situation is getting shaken up in the last kilometers of the Nufenen Pass, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pnd.png Dombrowski who is trying to catch pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vsa_world.png Schleck all alone, and the rest of the climbers being quite distant by now, starting from pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Boily.

But then, when it's presumably too late, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ubs.png Amador tries something. While the Costa Rican is almost 4 minutes behind pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vsa_world.png Schleck and 3 behind pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pnd.png Dombrowski, he could still try and stay on the podium while he's at it. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Morton and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Van den Broeck try to follow, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png König, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Quintana, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Kolesnikov and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Olivier are forming a group of 4 that is chasing - or at least trying to limit the damage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Suisse/PCM0136.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Arndt is of course in the lead atop the last climb, but the real question is whether he'll keep it or get caught by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vsa_world.png Schleck. Or pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png Galta. Or even pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pnd.png Dombrowski, who knows!

1 minute and a half later, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png Galta collects his points with still a solid minute advantage on pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vsa_world.png Andy Schleck, that he'll try to keep thanks to his better descending skills.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Suisse/PCM0137.jpg

Adrenaline has kicked in for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ubs.png Amador, who is going really strong at the moment, having caught pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Boily and shortly after pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm_den.png Guldhammer, too, and it now looks like he's trying to shake him off his wheel.

Meanwhile, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Van den Broeck and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Morton catch pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Cink and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Kangert, and try to limit the damage in the last kilometers of the climb, fully aware they can try to make up some terrain in the final downhill section.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Suisse/PCM0138.jpg

The KoM standings, good source of points, now see pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Arndt leading with 62 points, 10 points of advantage on pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vsa_world.png Schleck and 14 on pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png Galta. It's still possible, and likely, that they will change tomorrow, of course.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Suisse/PCM0139.jpg

With less than 10 kms to go, the situation doesn't seem set to change any more - what matters right now are time gaps. Arndt is adminstrating his advantage on Galta, who is on the contrary taking lots of risks to try and catch him - as well as gaining a better position in the general classification.

Schleck doesn't seem to be able to gain any time on Galta, either, and neither does Dombrowski on the World Champion. The only one who is trying really hard to move something is Amador, who as it looks right now would even lose a 2nd place in favour of Dombrowski.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Suisse/PCM0140.jpg

The one pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Arndt took today is a fantastic victory. He got absolutely nothing wrong and administrated his advantage on everyone with a coldness that only the best have. Congratulations!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Suisse/PCM0141.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png Galta himself didn't get much wrong - he just wasn't strong enough. His 2nd place will still let him climb lots and lots of positions in the GC, and I'm sure his manager will be delighted, too.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Suisse/PCM0142.jpg

Even for someone like pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vsa_world.png Andy Schleck, today has been something special. With a 3rd place he takes the leader's jersey, and tomorrow we'll know if he'll keep it like it's expected of him to do.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Suisse/PCM0143.jpg

In the end, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pnd.png Dombrowski didn't have a particularly brilliant final 20 kms, and this image shows it. He likely will gain a position from pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Morton, but it doesn't look like the gap will be enough to take over pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ubs.png Amador’s position.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Suisse/PCM0144.jpg

Waiting and seeing is not something that pays off every time. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ubs.png Amador was in good form today, and could have even kept his jersey if only he responded to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vsa_world.png Schleck's attack. We are left appreciating his awesome effort over the last 25 kms, going from being 4 minutes behind someone like Schleck, to recuperating 2 and a half of that gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Suisse/PCM0145.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Van den Broeck is then 6th with a nice sprint, ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm_den.png Guldhammer and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Morton. He's been on an upward trend lately, and he keeps it up today too.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Suisse/PCM0146.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Olivier and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png König were coming from behind to catch pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Boily in the last meters and even outsprint him, to deny him the joy of a top 10 after a great day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Suisse/PCM0147.jpg

The bunch sprint of the main group, 7 minutes and a half back, is then won by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbh.png Diaz to take 12th ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vsa.png Goos, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Stancu, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ubs.png Schelling and a mediocre pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Quintana.
