The queen stage is upon us! This stage alone is definitely going to shake up the GC and if you don’t feel good today, you might have to say goodbye to whatever you had achieved in the days before. It’s also expected to see several riders going either outside the time limit or not finishing.
3 long, steep climbs, all being about 20 kms long with average slopes always close to the 8%. The final, however, is downhill, which makes it all more exciting, considering the riders will have to move earlier.
Favourites for today, as far as what we’ve seen so far, have to be Schleck and Dombrowski, but Amador will want to defend his GC lead, too, just like Morton, Guldhammer and many other climbers will try to at least take a stage.
It's not been long since the riders have taken off, and the Susten Pass is already making things interesting. The longest climb of the day sees 3 great climbers in Arndt, Galta and Cink advantaging themselves over the peloton, that halfway through the climb is composed of only 70 units. Gusev was originally in the break attempt, but got dropped shortly after the climb started.
Arndt is first at the top of the first HC climb of the day, in front of Galta and Cink, who got dropped in the last meters but will get back in the lead in the following descent.
Not much is happening yet, and at the top of the second HC climb of the day, it's now Galta taking the most points, ahead of course of Arndt and Cink.
The Czech is in the same situation as earlier on, except this time he's not a few meters behind but actually 2 minutes and a half, so it will be hard for him to get back in the head.
Meanwhile, 4 riders get out of the main group that is now 7 minutes behind with UBS taking up relaying duties. Their names are Boily, La Lavandier, Kangert and Geniez. With 2 kms until the end of the climb, their gap from Galta and Arndt is over 4 minutes and a half.
Boily had a successful attack at the top of the last mountain pass, and with the last climb of the day - the hardest one arguably - about to come up, he holds an advantage of 1 minute or so on the other 3.
He also has the same time to recuperate from Cink, who hasn't caught up with the leaders yet, either, and doubtfully will.
This is the moment when, with 31 to go and 7 kms yet to be climbed, Boily catches up with Cink - which doesn't mean much stage win-wise, considering the 2 leaders have a 3 minutes and a half advantage on both of them.
Andy Schleck launches a huge attack from far out, 30 kms to go for the peloton exactly. No one is able to follow the acceleration of the World Champion, which is what matters most, since most of us should know by now what happens when Schleck gets any kind of advantage on an uphill section.
The World Champion likely won't fight for the victory, but he'll certainly try to gain as much time as possible on his opponents.
It might be a bit too late, but 1 km later Josh Dombrowski understands he has to go on his own if he wants to catch the best climber in the world - who is already 1 minute ahead of him, and more than 2 minutes in front of the rest of the favourites' group. Even in this case, no one follows.
Schleck continues his quest by catching Cink and Boily even before Kangert and La Lavandier have the chance to do so.
Before then, Geniez had gotten dropped, and Dombrowski had caught up with him, dropping him as well shortly after. The American is not making up any terrain compared to Schleck.
Dombrowski catches Boily, Cink and Kangert, after having dropped La Lavandier, and the gap from Schleck starts to stabilise.
Further in the front, news reach Arndt that Schleck is getting worryingly close - "just" 4 minutes separate him from the lead with 25 to go - and decides to increase the pace, which leads to Galta getting dropped pretty quickly.
Things are moving in the pack as well, and Guldhammer tries a move that causes some selection. The Danish escapes from a group where Morton is pulling alone for some time now. Amador quite clearly can't help him more than that much, and sits on his wheel.
The situation is getting shaken up in the last kilometers of the Nufenen Pass, with Dombrowski who is trying to catch Schleck all alone, and the rest of the climbers being quite distant by now, starting from Boily.
But then, when it's presumably too late, Amador tries something. While the Costa Rican is almost 4 minutes behind Schleck and 3 behind Dombrowski, he could still try and stay on the podium while he's at it. Morton and Van den Broeck try to follow, König, Quintana, Kolesnikov and Olivier are forming a group of 4 that is chasing - or at least trying to limit the damage.
Arndt is of course in the lead atop the last climb, but the real question is whether he'll keep it or get caught by Schleck. Or Galta. Or even Dombrowski, who knows!
1 minute and a half later, Galta collects his points with still a solid minute advantage on Andy Schleck, that he'll try to keep thanks to his better descending skills.
Adrenaline has kicked in for Amador, who is going really strong at the moment, having caught Boily and shortly after Guldhammer, too, and it now looks like he's trying to shake him off his wheel.
Meanwhile, Van den Broeck and Morton catch Cink and Kangert, and try to limit the damage in the last kilometers of the climb, fully aware they can try to make up some terrain in the final downhill section.
The KoM standings, good source of points, now see Arndt leading with 62 points, 10 points of advantage on Schleck and 14 on Galta. It's still possible, and likely, that they will change tomorrow, of course.
With less than 10 kms to go, the situation doesn't seem set to change any more - what matters right now are time gaps. Arndt is adminstrating his advantage on Galta, who is on the contrary taking lots of risks to try and catch him - as well as gaining a better position in the general classification.
Schleck doesn't seem to be able to gain any time on Galta, either, and neither does Dombrowski on the World Champion. The only one who is trying really hard to move something is Amador, who as it looks right now would even lose a 2nd place in favour of Dombrowski.
The one Arndt took today is a fantastic victory. He got absolutely nothing wrong and administrated his advantage on everyone with a coldness that only the best have. Congratulations!
Galta himself didn't get much wrong - he just wasn't strong enough. His 2nd place will still let him climb lots and lots of positions in the GC, and I'm sure his manager will be delighted, too.
Even for someone like Andy Schleck, today has been something special. With a 3rd place he takes the leader's jersey, and tomorrow we'll know if he'll keep it like it's expected of him to do.
In the end, Dombrowski didn't have a particularly brilliant final 20 kms, and this image shows it. He likely will gain a position from Morton, but it doesn't look like the gap will be enough to take over Amador’s position.
Waiting and seeing is not something that pays off every time. Amador was in good form today, and could have even kept his jersey if only he responded to Schleck's attack. We are left appreciating his awesome effort over the last 25 kms, going from being 4 minutes behind someone like Schleck, to recuperating 2 and a half of that gap.
Van den Broeck is then 6th with a nice sprint, ahead of Guldhammer and Morton. He's been on an upward trend lately, and he keeps it up today too.
Olivier and König were coming from behind to catch Boily in the last meters and even outsprint him, to deny him the joy of a top 10 after a great day.
The bunch sprint of the main group, 7 minutes and a half back, is then won by Diaz to take 12th ahead of Goos, Stancu, Schelling and a mediocre Quintana.
