Post Danmark Rundt - Stage 1
matt17br
The Denmark Rundt starts off with a pan flat, medium length stage that suits most sprinters here quite perfectly. Favourites to take the first leader jersey are pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/t3a.png Nelson, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tcr_crc.png Guillén, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/nwb.png Nizzolo and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/chi.png Drapac, but this is CT and usually it’s a lot more mixed up so let’s hope we’ll get an exciting final kms!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Denmark/1.png

Only two riders manage to escape from the pack: their names are pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Contreras and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spw.png Connolly, and they're ranked in this order when it's time to reach the first TV sprint of the day, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tcr_crc.png Guillén in 3rd place sprinting from the group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Denmark/PCZ0001.jpg

Just like in the first sprint, it's Contreras taking 6 points in front of his break-mate. This time around, it's pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/t3a.png Nelson sprinting his way to 3rd from the peloton, that follows 2 minutes behind with 50 kms to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Denmark/PCZ0002.jpg

With 15 kms to go, Connolly attacks to try and drop Contreras, but his attempt is done 3 kms later: what the Irishman does however is attacking as soon as Contreras catches him again, visibly tired, and this time his attempt is actually successful, with the Argentinian not even trying to make an effort to follow him. The head of the race now has about 1 minute advantage on the pack with 12 kilometers to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Denmark/PCZ0003.jpg

Just under the 10 kms to go arc, Contreras gets caught by the pack, where pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/t3a.png Podium Ambition, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/yas.png cycleYorkshire and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tcr.png Ticos Air are working hard to also catch the current head, Connolly, who is 50 seconds ahead of them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Denmark/PCZ0004.jpg

The Irish powerhouse resists until the 5 kms to go mark, but then has to give up to the peloton, that is going really strong at the moment.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Denmark/PCZ0005.jpg

With 3 to go the situation is clear: the trains in the front are those of the team that have been in front of the peloton for the entireness of the race, so cycleYorkshire, Ticos Air and Podium Ambition, with respectively pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/yas.png Rowe, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tcr_crc.png Guillen and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/t3a.png Nelson getting led out by their domestiques.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/chi.png Drapac and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spb.png Rizza are also in the mix sitting on Rowe's and Nelson's wheels. All other sprinters are quite distanced.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Denmark/PCZ0006.jpg

The situation changes quite a bit after the last 90° turn, with several riders getting close to those 3 trains. Most importantly, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Jones, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/fnz.png Von Hoff, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Martinez and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lse.png Vanderaerden are closer to the positions that count, with about 2 kms to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Denmark/PCZ0007.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Mezgec and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png King from far behind knew they had to try to anticipate the sprint to have a chance to win and they did so perfectly thus far: they're in front of everyone else and now need to give everything they have left in the tank until the finish line.

They also produce the nice result of leaving pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tcr_crc.png Guillén and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/t3a.png Nelson very boxed quite a few meters behind. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/chi.png Drapac, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/yas.png Corti, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tcr.png Morales, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/fnz.png Von Hoff, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lse.png Vanderaerden and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/yas.png Rowe on the other hand are all close to them and still in contention.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Denmark/PCZ0008.jpg

Just 25 meters until the line and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/chi.png Drapac seems to be in the best position to take this, but pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Mezgec is still going strong to at least try and keep a podium place. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/yas.png Corti and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/fnz.png Von Hoff on the Australian's wheel will try to burn him on the line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Denmark/PCZ0009.jpg

...which doesn't happen, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/chi.png Drapac takes a great win with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/yas.png Corti who unexpectedly comes really, really short! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/fnz.png Von Hoff completes the podium with a nice performance.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Denmark/PCZ0010.jpg

In 4th place we find pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lse.png Vanderaerden, with a tactically sound pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Mezgec taking a well-earned, yet unlucky 5th.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/yas.png Rowe, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png King, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tcr.png Morales, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tcr_crc.png Guillén and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Bole follow, rounding off the top 10, which sees today's favourite, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/t3a.png Nelson, right outside of it, along with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Jones, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spb.png Rizza and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/esc.png Martinez, 14th.
