This is a quite unpredictable stage coming up. The final 2 climbs are not your typical mountain passes because of their length, but I wouldn’t consider them hills either. So, riders that can tackle shorter hills whilst resisting on longer ascents could have a great chance today, and Kwiatkowski and Boily spring to mind in that aspect.
However, the top favourites remain the GC leaders: Schleck, Amador, Dombrowski, Morton and Guldhammer. It’ll be an exciting stage either way, so let’s follow it together!
Today's first part of the stage will be animated by a strong group of 6: KoM leader Edet, Wyss, Abreu, Stoltz, Eibegger and Grabovski.
With a majestic sprint, Edet takes the 2nd category sprint in front of Eibegger and Stoltz: he therefore strengthens his position at the top of the rankings, with 36 points now, 14 more than the 2nd places.
In the TV sprint that follows, it's Eibegger in front of Stoltz - not that it matters, since no one in the break bothered sprinting either. The head of the race has a 3 minutes advantage on the peloton with 90 to go.
Teuns and Addy couldn't join the break at first, so they do it now, with 85 to go, following the 2nd category climb the riders faced earlier on. The 2 are both in the top 10 of the KoM standings, so it will be interesting to see if they remain in the lead enough to contest the 1st category point that will be coming in 65 kms time.
2 kms until it's time for the lead to get atop today's 1st category climb. The peloton is really close to the break thanks to Aker's domestiques efforts throughout the entire stage, and 2 riders have already been caught: Teuns and Wyss. The others are just 30 seconds or so ahead, so it will be tough for them to resist in the front. Stoltz also gets caught shortly after.
Meanwhile, Eibegger has managed to get a good advantage on the rest of the break. The Austrian champion is holding a 20 seconds gap with still 1500 meters to go until the riders reach the top of the penultimate climb.
Amador attacks, unexpectedly! The Costa Rican is literally trying to dot his way up the climb, surprising everyone who expected him to attack powerfully - if he ever was going to do that. Instead, the GC leader is just steadily pedalling on his saddle, already having built a nice advantage with no one responding to his attempt.
Eibegger isn't caught and is ahead of everyone else when he reaches the top of the climb, with Abreu 2nd, Edet 3rd, Grabovski 4th and Amador 5th, who has caught and overtaken Addy in the meantime. Edet is of course fine with that, since he still gets 10 points.
It won't take much for the pack to catch Amador and the other 3 riders from the break - while Eibegger is still in the front with a 35 seconds advantage. This could prove to be a tactical mistake for the leader, who has certainly spent more energies than Schleck, Dombrowski and the likes.
Eibegger can't even win the last TV sprint as Kreder and Van Stayen escape from the peloton and catch him.
Kreder is narrowly in front of Van Stayen - a really small revenge of Stage 4's photofinish. The situation now sees a compact group again, with 89 riders in it and Aker's Hoelgaard still relaying after having done so for quite a long mileage.
Nothing happens until the 2 kms to go mark, when Dombrowski tries to start his sprint, with Schleck, Kwiatkowski, Guldhammer, Arndt and Morton all close to him. Amador is not in the very front - which is pretty worrying!
Close to the flamme rouge and Dombrowski is still leading out everyone else, producing the result of not dropping anyone but at least putting more pressure on Amador, who doesn't seem to react well to that: he seems pretty tired compared to the rest of them.
Schleck tries to get Dombrowski out of his way and also starts his sprint, and it's looking like it'll be the 2 of them going toe-to-toe for the win, just like in the exciting finale of stage 2.
Guldhammer, Arndt, Kwiatkowski and Morton are looking the best for a podium spot, with Van den Broeck and Amador about 20 meters behind them. Everyone else is a lot more distant, which means that quite a lot of GC riders will certainly suffer this stage timing-wise.
Just a few more meters to go and Schleck is looking a bit better for a win, being a few meters in front of the American, but nothing is sure at the moment...
... Andy Schleck has finally made it! Very, very important victory for the World Champion, who takes back what slipped out of his hands in stage 2. Dombrowski has to settle for a 2nd place, that is still very impressive considering how he raced the last km.
Guldhammer has a good enough sprint and makes it to the podium, while a surprisingly good Arndt, after he lost all hopes of a good GC place, takes 4th in front of Kwiatkowski - who probably had this day marked in red on his calendar, but will still be reasonably satisfied about what he achieved. Morton is 6th for the day.
Amador and Van den Broeck are close, but it's the GC leader taking 7th. He'll have to hope gaps aren't counted, otherwise Schleck will make up almost all the time he had to recuperate from him in just one day – taking into account the 10" bonus too.
König comes from way back to snatch a good 9th in front of Boily, who rounds off the top 10. Kolesnikov is only just 11th, having fought it out with Warbasse until the very last meter, while Olivier is 13th.
