The TT is underway! One of the most crucial stages of this Tour de Suisse, today is perhaps not going to show us who will win the race, but at least tell us who should be counted out of the battle for the podium places. No one among the GC riders, besides Amador, is among the very top favourites for today: the best TTists here are the likes of Zmorka, Durbridge, Vlatos and many others. However, it wouldn’t be unexpected to see a relative outsider take this either, if you know how the MG often goes!
Olman sets a good time early on, finishing in 26'08", to overtake Burke – with 26'34" - and Nechita - 26'36" -, first and second before the Australian champion finished his time trial. Bernaudeau a few positions after him is 12" short of the 1st place, and settles in 2nd for now.
Vlatos is one of the first to start, among today's big favorites. It looks like he'll live up to the expectations based on his time at the first checkpoint: 10" faster than Olman, 13" faster than Dempster, who took off just a minute later than the Greek champion.
We'll have to wait for the other favourites, but for now one thing is sure: Vlatos is the first to stop the clock in a time below 26 minutes, 25'47" exactly, which means he's been 21 seconds faster than Olman. Dillier, who was 3rd after the halfway point, and Dempster, with the same time as the Swiss, will partly confirm this.
Dempster is just 1 second too slow to occupy the 2nd place, that fellow Aussie Olman will keep.
Dillier on the other hand sets the same time as Olman as it seems, and it's not sure yet whether he is 2nd or 3rd because of some problems with the timing.
Zmorka, today's very top favourite also takes off, and he certainly does so quickly: the Ukrainian, with half time trial to ride, holds a 15 seconds advantage on Vlatos, that looked good to battle him.
Viennet has also gotten past the halfway checkpoint, and he's looking very good for a podium: the French is holding a 2nd place, 11" behind Zmorka and 4" ahead of Vlatos.
Zmorka gains 5 more seconds on Vlatos to get the first place at the end of the race, too. His 25'26" will be really really tough to beat for everyone, and no one seems able to do so, so far. Before him, Jayco'z Li finished in 6th place, between Dempster and Bernaudeau.
Viennet on the other hand loses time from Vlatos and he has the same time as the Greek champion at the end of his ride.
Durbridge sets a surprisingly good time halfway through: he's 2nd, just 2 seconds slower than Zmorka. Might he be the first one dethroning the Ukrainian?
Right after him, it's Sütterlin who sets the expectations bar to a podium place: the German is 1" quicker than Viennet after 10 kms.
Durbridge finishes it off as 2nd in 25'36": not bad at all, considering how fast Zmorka went.
Sütterlin is very close to the podium, but he's just 5th in the end, 21 seconds behind the lead, but still 1" off Viennet's and Vlatos' times. Danish NC Christensen after him finishes in 10th place, with a time of 26'16".
Another good time halfway through is set by Howson, 3rd, 1 second quicker than Sütterlin.
Sergent started just one second after him and he manages to be 3 seconds quicker than Howson. We'll see what the Oceanian two can do in 10 kms time.
Not a bad time at all by Howson, who manages to stay on the podium for now with a time of 25'44". But will he keep it with Sergent finishing his ride soon?
He won't! Sergent is now 3rd, with a time 6 seconds quicker than Howson’s, but just 2 behind Durbridge. A few minutes later, Vorobev is also done with a time of 26'07": the same as Dillier and Olman.
Kittel mildly disappoints so far, after so many favourites outdoing each other: halfway through the race, he's 8th, 17 seconds behind Zmorka.
The former German champion Kittel keeps his 8th place, neither improving nor worsening his situation: he's 22 seconds behind Zmorka, but just 1" behind Sütterlin, which will hurt frankly.
Several riders follow, and among them, Malori is 9th at the end of his stage, 38" behind Zmorka, but also 16" behind one position above his. Hepburn is 1" behind the only Italian in Tinkoff's team, and Sterobo, off to a great start, can't keep it up and finishes just outside the top 10. Lastly, Kreuziger is just 1" slower than Dempster to momentarily fill the 16th place.
The first puncheurs and climbers start to cross the line: Fraile is one of the best today, currently 9th in 25'59". After him, Koren is 17th in 26'08", while before him, Izagirre had finished 19th in 26'10".
The GC’s top 5 riders start to arrive: Guldhammer doesn't exactly have a brilliant day and finishes it off nearly 2 minutes behind Zmorka with 27'17". The other 4 are not doing very well either...
... Dombrowski in fact has exactly the same time as the Dane, while the top 3 all seem to be doing a bit better than that.
Morton does 16 seconds better than both of them, to currently occupy a mediocre 84th place. Only Schleck and Amador left for this TT to end.
Schleck finishes 82th in 26'56", with Amador who looks to be going quite a bit stronger too: not looking good for the Luxembourg star.
The Costa Rican is in fact 22nd at the end of the stage, “just” 51" behind Zmorka and more importantly, a solid 39 seconds ahead of Schleck. He not only will retain his jersey, but he'll cement his first place too, ahead of 3 important stages.
So as we can see, not much changes in the top 10 aside from the gaps: Van den Broeck is actually the biggest mover, and he was even very close to the 6th place held by Quintana. He's paying the consequences of BPost's terrible TTT, but nothing that can't be fixed!
