Today’s result will depend on whether the stage is raced hard in the last kilometers or not: the hill that the riders will face starting from 8 kms to go and culminating with less than 6 to go is really steep, featuring gradients touching 10%, with an average of about 7%.
Either way, Van Stayen has the skills to win in every scenario. Other notable punchy sprinters include Keukeleire, Aregger and Kreder. But who knows, can’t it be a GC rider trying to gain time who goes solo and takes it?
Today's BotD is formed by 3 riders: Oelerich, Edet and Addy.
The riders don't contest the first and third TV sprints - which for completeness sake are won by Oelreich both times. It's with a nice sprint however that Addy takes the 2nd category KoM points ahead of Edet, who already was 5th with 12 points in the same competition ahead of today, and now momentarily climbs to 4th.
The advantage of the 3 on the pack, after rising to not more than 4 minutes, falls to 2 minutes and a half when 100 kms are left.
Oelerich is also first in the 3rd and penultimate TV of the day, somehow. He gets in the front at the right moment as it seems.
More importantly, with the group now in sight, Edet takes back part of the points he lost in the first KoM sprint of the day finishing ahead of Addy in this 3rd category hill. Later, Addy is in the front when it's time for the last intermediate sprint of the day.
The trio is caught with 20 kms to go exactly, thanks to a lack of collaboration between the 3 and to a great effort by yesterday's winners Gazelle, still keen on working together taking turns.
With almost 10 to go, Vesuvio start putting their workhorses in the front, and no one is able to sprint for the points of the last hill of the day, where Goos and Pellaud are ahead relaying.
The riders are atop of the hill that we thought would be decisive today: no attacks, Vesuvio are going too fast for that. 5 kms to go, and it's looking like the best punchy sprinters will fight it out, but the majority of riders in the front are actually GC men, so we'll see how it pans out.
We're 1 km from the flamme rouge when we can finally see a couple of fast men in the front, both aided by 1 teammate: Van Stayen and Kreder are their names. But, the real question is, how much energy is left in their tanks?
Boswell doing some very fine leadout job for Wesley Kreder, and as we are literally under the flamme rouge, the duo are in front of everyone else, while Bekmanis and Van Stayen struggle to find some traction, caught behind in the traffic.
The Belgian powerhouse decides to give up on his teammate, and he tries to catch Boswell on his own, but when he does, Kreder is just about to start his sprint. It will be an exciting finale with those 2 head-to-head, while behind them no one seems to be able to contest the victory.
Boswell is done with his work, but it seems like it was kinda late as Van Stayen is now toe-to-toe with the Dutch. The eBuddy sprinter will have to resist today's early favorite comeback.
It's really close, and in these kinds of situations you either win or lose. And while Van Stayen didn't manage to resist Kennaugh’s comeback in stage 1, his wheel is ahead of Kreder's today, in a very similar scenario! Perfect sprint by the Belgian, but not a perfect team work – not that he will care!
eBuddy will be really happy either way with Boswell retaining a podium place, ahead of Goos who takes a great 4th place after working all throughout the last kms.
No bonus time, but Amador morally - and physically - defeats Andy Schleck to take a 5th place. Thomson is 7th ahead of Guldhammer, Bekmanis and Schelling who rounds off today's top 10.
