Tour de Suisse - Stage 3
matt17br
Day 3: the TTT, a very important day for all teams, which need to avoid getting this wrong. Everyone needs to give their all to either go for the stage win, or to avoid time losses for their captains. It’s hard to talk about favorites today, but 3 teams stand out from the crowd as the best TTT trains: pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png the experienced Jayco’z train, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png the almost all-Russian Tinkoff, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Grieg.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Suisse/3.png

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Grieg are the first team to start and they set a very good time early on at the first intermediate, 11'05"...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Suisse/PCM0032.jpg

...a provisional time that is not beaten or gotten close to until pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd.png Kenya Airways' colorful set-up takes the start and is just 4" off the leading time at the first checkpoint, 5" ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png I-Gen, and 6" quicker than pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/met.png Metinvest.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Suisse/PCM0033.jpg

When the Scandinavian cross the line, the clock stops at 40'58", a time that will not be easy to bit, as highlighted by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Pokerstars that is 1'36" behind on the finish line. At the first and only checkpoint, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png RBC see their time being only 7" slower than the current leaders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Suisse/PCM0034.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Aegon had a good team effort, losing only 10 seconds in the last 3/4s of the race, after being 14" behind after the first quarter, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Evonik after them is 11" faster than pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Pokerstars.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Suisse/PCM0035.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Gazelle also have started and they manage to stop the clock in less time than how much it took to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Grieg. They're 4 seconds in front of them after 10 kms, which is better than what they were predicted to do. We'll see if they'll continue on that projection. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbh.png Red Bull crosses the line in 3rd, almost 1 minute behind, in the meantime.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Suisse/PCM0036.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png I-Gen closes their TTT in 2nd, losing 1" in the second part of the race after they were c.a. 10" off the Norwegian's time. Before them, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/btc.png Bouygues were done for the day 11" quicker than pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Evonik.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Suisse/PCM0037.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus.png Movistar already beat pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Gazelle's time at the first checkpoint, getting past it 8" quicker than they did. Will they keep the strong riding up?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Suisse/PCM0038.jpg

The Russians - and Italian NC Malori - over there at pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Tinkoff set a good time after 10 kms, sneaking in 2nd in between pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus.png Movistar and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Gazelle, 5" behind the partial leaders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Suisse/PCM0039.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/met.png Metinvest are quicker than pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png I-Gen in the last 3 quarters of the race, losing nothing from pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Grieg, but not making terrain up either, which means that they will have to settle for a provisional 2nd after 33 kms, just 6 seconds short of the Norwegian based team.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Suisse/PCM0040.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd.png Kenya Airways are only 5 at the finish line, but enough to get pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png I-Gen off the lowest step of our - very - provisional podium, with a time of 41'05". A few minutes later, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Puma crosses the line in 6th, 15" better than pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbh.png Red Bull.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Suisse/PCM0041.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ubs.png UBS set their own time at the first checkpoint, 14" slower than the still leading pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus.png Movistar, which is actually a very good time considering they're not a team that headed into today's stage with podium ambitions - which is something that looks possible right now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Suisse/PCM0042.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Jayco’z haven't been going as strong as it was expected of them and they hold the 3rd time after the first intermediate point - 1 second slower than pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Tinkoff. With 6 teams, and possibly more being so close, it will be a tight, exciting last second part of the TTT we're following. A few minutes later pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vtb.png Vontobel cross the finish line in 6th, as close to the 5th place as they are to the 7th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Suisse/PCM0043.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png Aker are 16" off pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus.png Movistar's time at the first checkpoint, also a surprisingly good performance so far - so far being the key word here, it's not rare to see teams fading away as the finish line approaches!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Suisse/PCM0044.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vsa.png Vesuvio are the last team to get past the first time check, doing so perfectly in line with what was expected and wanted from them. In fact, they're currently holding a time just 1 second slower than pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ubs.png UBS. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Becherovka, meanwhile, have crossed the line 11 seconds quicker than pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbh.png Red Bull.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Suisse/PCM0045.jpg

A few minutes later pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Orange come in 6th, just 1 second slower than pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Aegon's time thanks to a great finale.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Suisse/PCM0046.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png RBC cross the line in a provisional 5th place after a solid team effort, actually in line compared to what we expected them to do.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Suisse/PCM0047.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pnd.png Pendleton's finish it off in 8th, 5" quicker than pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vtb.png Vontobel, but 3" off the 6th place pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Aegon holds. Depending on the other favorites teams' times, the yellow jersey holder and yesterday's winner will choose whether to be happy or not! After them, it's time for a really mediocre pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png BPost who stop the clock 1'08" off pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Grieg's time. On the bright side, they'll be happy to hear they're far from the last place, though!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Suisse/PCM0048.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Grieg is notified to leave the hot seats as their time is shattered by an amazing performance of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Gazelle! The BeNeLux team has stopped the clock in 40 minutes and 40 seconds, almost 18 seconds quicker than the Scandinavian team. Great performance they'll be certainly delighted about.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Suisse/PCM0049.jpg

The famous puncheur's galore has one more reason to cheer as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus.png Movistar couldn't keep up their top time after the first checkpoint, and finish 3" behind them. Incredibly, the American team still was completely united at the finish line, with all the 8 riders finishing their effort without gaps between each other. They're the first to do so today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Suisse/PCM0050.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Tinkoff are behind, too, closing it off in 3rd place, 8" behind the provisional leaders. Curiously enough, both pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus.png Movistar and the Russian team lost 11" from pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Gazelle in the second part of the race. After them, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png eBuddy crosses the line in 13th place, 51" behind, which is not that bad actually considering they were nowhere near the favorites in yesterday's predictions.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Suisse/PCM0051.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ubs.png UBS are very close to the podium, but no cigar: the home team only lost 3" from pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Gazelle in the second part of the stage, which wasn't enough to also overtake pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Tinkoff, or pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus.png Movistar for that matter.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Suisse/PCM0052.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Jayco’z won't bag a win today, either: the Aussies are not even 2nd as they close their team effort in 40'44", 4" off the lead and 1" behind pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus.png Movistar. They also lost some time from pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Gazelle, which seems to have been the key to what seems like a more and more likely win at this point!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Suisse/PCM0053.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png Aker will have to wait for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vsa.png Vesuvio to see if it will be a top 10 or not for them. The Scandinavian team is in fact a provisional 10th with just 1 team to go, 28" behind pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Gazelle. Not too bad, not great either.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Suisse/PCM0054.jpg

The volcanoes can be satisfied with their final 8th place: they gain on pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pnd.png Pendleton's and don't lose too much from pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ubs.png UBS - which is one of today's biggest surprises. And so it's official: pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Gazelle takes this against - all? Well most at least - odds. We'll have to await the official times to see whether it is Amador or Schleck wearing yellow tomorrow...

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Suisse/PCM0055.jpg

...it will be Amador! It's gonna be an understandably happy night over there in their hotel rooms!
