Very interesting stage coming up today! Mountain finish starting off with a long up a HC mountain, descending to a long flat section and then reaching the foot of the last climb, where most of the action should take place. The favorite is obviously Andy Schleck, but it’s a good chance to shine for Amador, Dombrowski and others as well!
No one can escape without getting caught by Vesuvio's mountain train, that seems not very keen on letting anyone escape. At the top of the Hors Categorie's KoM first is Frank Schleck, in front of Suaza and Edet, but surprisingly there was no one trying to sprint for the points, probably due to the mad pace the Luxembourg team is laying down.
Teuns is the first one who is able to escape now that things have calmed down in the descent. With 100 to go he has an advantage of 2 minutes over a 100 men peloton.
The Belgian is caught 50 kms later, unable to get any kind of points out of the stage with 10 kms dividing the riders from the first intermediate sprint of the day.
The riders going for the sprint are the same 3 that stepped on the podium yesterday at the end of the stage, in exactly the same order: Kennaugh, Van Stayen, Holloway.
In the second one the top 2 switch their positions, with the Belgian getting the timing right for once.
Vesuvio absolutely goes in as it's time for the final climb, and they immediately split the pack in several sections. Suaza, and his brother Frank are in front to help Andy Schleck, while Dombrowski, Amador and Guldhammer are also part of the first group.
In the second group there are 7 more riders - while all the others are left behind in the main peloton. has Morton has Haig and Dyball to help, while Quintana, Olivier, Goos and Frank are also trying to get back in the front whilst the result is exactly the opposite, with the head widening the gap.
2 kms later and Haig's work is succesful as he manages to get Morton back in the front along with Quintana. There are now 9 in front with an advantage of 30" on the second group, with Frank Schleck who has now gotten dropped after doing some fine work for his brother.
With the passing of time more riders join the front as also Goos, Olivier, Dyball and Van den Broeck are back in contention for a stage victory. The pace in the front has clearly dropped and evidently, it will take some more time for someone to make a move.
5 kms to go and it's now 41 riders in the in the front again, everything needs to be redone by the top teams to make some selection!
Andy Schleck tries to go before the flamme rouge as nothing happens in the meantime. Might be a risky move for him though, with everyone sticking on his wheel, trying not to let him get a gap!
Dombrowski might have caught everyone by surprise as the World Champion tried to slow down his attempt not to waste energies! We'll see if his attack was well timed, but in the meantime Amador, Suaza, Morton and Guldhammer resist.
Schleck still hangs on his wheel as everyone now needs to give their all! It seems like it will be between those 2 as their 3 rivals can't really match their pace.
It will be a fantastic show down, the two are very close and whoever has the most energies left in the tank will take it!
It's hard to tell from this image, but the speaker announces a victory for Dombrowski! I've never seen anything quite as close as this, awesome timing from the American to beat the World Champion, that can't believe his eyes himself.
Amador is 3rd with a good enough performance, while Guldhammer and Morton are 4th and 5th and very close between themselves, too.
Van den Broeck snatches a very good 6th in front of Quintana, who settles for 7th.
Olivier and Arndt sprint to take the 8th and the 9th place respectively.
König is the last to snatch a top 10 while Suaza is just behind him, after doing a great job for his captain. Kolesnikov, Karnulin, Kwiatkowski and Aru follow in a single file.
