Amstel Gold Race

Welcome to Maastricht for the 2016 Amstel Gold Race. The riders will be pleased to see the beautiful sun today but many not so pleased about the heavy winds that could batter them today, as they traverse the 252km course around Limburg.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Amstel/MG16_amstel_1_001.jpg

It takes almost 50 kilometres for a small break to establish itself. When it does it’s the teams of three favourites trying to excuse themselves from the chasing who are involved:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd.png Thomson
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/btc.png Kozhatayev
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Dyball

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Amstel/MG16_amstel_1_002.jpg

Very quiet day in the pack with each of the favourites teams putting a few riders in the chase, this all changes with about 50km to go though as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png Aker and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Tinkoff begin to set the pace, quickly pulling the break’s lead back to 2’30.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Amstel/MG16_amstel_1_003.jpg

That said, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Gazelle takes over the pace and with 17km remaining pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd.png Thomson is caught, while the other 2 break members only have a lead of 1 minute with still 2 major climbs remaining.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Amstel/MG16_amstel_1_004.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd_ita.png Ponzi lights things up on the Keutenberg, attacking past the break! But nobody lets the reigning champion go just like that, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png Hagen is behind him in an instant, before you know it pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Spilak, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/btc.png Bakelants, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa_rus.png Trofimov and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus_usa.png Van Garderen get behind him and a move like that is never going to free, as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vsa.png Gastauer and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Van Avermaet make sure they don’t escape, keeping the situation at status quo with 10km left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Amstel/MG16_amstel_1_005.jpg

We reach the bottom of the Cauberg! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa_rus.png Trofimov moves to the front, confidently setting the pace but pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd_ita.png Ponzi, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Ginanni and a small group of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png Aker riders line up next to him. Directly behind them are pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Skujins, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd.png Kwiatkowski, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/btc.png Bakelants, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Spilak and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Koretzky, while plenty of riders are in the next lines, waiting for the first attack!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Amstel/MG16_amstel_1_006.jpg

Nobody can make an attack though, the Cauberg is raced as a fight for pole position, where nobody escapes, leaving pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa_rus.png Trofimov still leading now with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Skujins on his wheel as the climb begins to flatten out. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/btc.png Bakelants, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Spilak and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png Hagen spread themselves across the right of the road. The real benefactor of the lack of attacks though is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Gazelle who puts 5 riders in the top 15, especially pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Ginanni behind pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Skujins and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Monfort leading pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Konrad next to the Latvian. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd_ita.png Ponzi now has fallen back behind pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Ginanni but has his teammate pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd.png Kwiatkowski for support.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Amstel/MG16_amstel_1_007.jpg

No change as they enter the final kilometre but the group bunches up in anticipation for the sprint, the best sprinter at the front here is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd_ita.png Ponzi who’s now sliding up alongside pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Ginanni on the left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Amstel/MG16_amstel_1_008.jpg

The sprint kicks off! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa_rus.png Trofimov and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd_ita.png Ponzi come neck and neck with 500 metres remaining while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Skujins, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Ginanni and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Konrad desperately try to keep up with the pace!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Amstel/MG16_amstel_1_009.jpg

200 metres later and there’s still almost no gap between the two last winners of this race but for now pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa_rus.png Trofimov is still very slightly ahead. Same situation now for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Skujins and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Ginanni who take a wheel of the leader’s each!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Amstel/MG16_amstel_1_010.jpg

So close the line they are neck and neck, the question is, who wants it more?!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Amstel/MG16_amstel_1_011.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd_ita.png Ponzi dives forward and wins the Amstel Gold Race for the second time in a row! Shame for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa_rus.png Trofimov though, who sits up and sees pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Ginanni 6-inch it to take 2nd place from right under his nose. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Skujins keeps 4th and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Konrad holds onto 5th in a much unexpected result. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Sagan comes from nowhere to steal 6th off pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Spilak. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc_aus.png Bobridge and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Kelderman also come from behind to beat pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/btc.png Bakelants and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png Hagen who really wasted their chance this race by not attacking.
