I recently got PCM 15 and was wondering... If this game originally came out at least in 2006, why is there no option to start at any historical date at least that far back (06) and play through all the years to now? Theoretically the teams, jerseys, riders, and stages should evolve through the years and the courses should reflect their true to life stages. Just a thought as it could be a great addition to the franchise. Imagine being able to choose a start date somewhere in the 70's or 80's and direct a team all the way through.
You can download a DB which does just that. There are a number of historical DBs available on the site and they will take you back to the 70s/80s and even the 50s! Sali has made 2 DBs for PCM15 from quick glance for 2001 and 1996.
The reason the game is does not carry over the previous files (jerseys, riders etc.) is for a number of reasons. Older files from previous editions are no longer compatible with newer versions, the size and layout of the jerseys and other graphics have changed to make them nicer looking in-game, and think of the size of the download to get all jerseys, accessories, equipment, riders and stages from the past 10 years installed on your pc or laptop!
While it's true we can download fan made databases to emulate a specific year, it would be great if the developers would allow a historical simulation of a greater period of time. It isn't outside the realm of possibility that they could update these files for each iteration of the game, therefore making historical starts possible and allowing for someone to say start in the year 2000 and play it out till now. Another option would be (if they took the lazy way out) would be to have historical courses only and alternate rosters for the old years with the same teams. I would prefer a more accurate approach but it would be nice to go through the years and have for example, an accurate TDF route for each year, allowing the player to run that particular course and then look forward to next year's iteration.
Cyanide struggle to make a correct updated game year on year, so you are expecting miracles to want them to produce more. You do know it is only just 10 guys working on this game to make it...
There are problems with licensing for the jerseys and teams involved, the time to recreate all the jerseys and other graphics and as I said, don't get me started on the size of the download it would require!
There is nothing stopping you producing the historical work so you can play it yourself. By your train of thoughts, it is something that is done so easily!

If it is a team of 10 guys, PCM 15 is a pretty impressive accomplishment. When you turn the graphics all the way up the presentation is amazing. I was hoping with events like the Tour being their signature draw that they would allow for a recreation of past tour events in terms of consecutive seasons. Being able to run each iteration of the race. Even selecting one off races like the Tour there should be an option whereby you can pick which year's route you would like to follow.
You can select alternate variants of races in single-race mode, if you've downloaded them. Cyanide themselves have provided Variant Packs which include variants for major races from 2010 onwards. Add to that community made races, which are often of outstanding quality and accuracy, and you can fill in most of the gaps in the post-2000 era as well as some excellent fantasy routes.
Obviously having a game where you can play through real history would be great, but first i'd want Cyanide to make a fully functioning and good game of just the current season. Then one that can run stabily forwards 5-10 season. Then once that's acheived i'd hope cyanide would work on going backwards in time. Until then, it's the community to the rescue!
