Tour of Bulgaria - Stage 5
trekbmc
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bulgaria/MG16_bulgaria_5_022.jpg

Another mountain stage ending on the hardest climb of the race up to Beklemento to conclude the Tour of Bulgaria. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/yas.png Tvetcov still holds the GC lead but only has 20 seconds on pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Antón and 40 seconds on pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Salinas. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Hacecký, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/frs.png Krizek and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hpa.png Pozzo are all within 2 minutes as well and should at least have the podium in reach.

Stage favourites pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Garby and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/elt.png Sella are 2’15 and 2’52 down respectively, but the possibility a brave attack or early collapse from another favourite on this climb means you can’t really discount them either.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bulgaria/MG16_bulgaria_5_001.jpg

The peloton is content to let quite a large break of 9 riders free today:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Öste-Macdonald
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/chi.png De Leon
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/frs.png Mandri, Jumabekov
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tcr.png Ito
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spw.png Konwa
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/t3a.png Robov
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/nwb.png Vorontsov
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/fnz.png Daspuntsag

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Öste-Macdonald inclusion is surprising as he is a very strong climber who would be of use to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Garby, so It may be a tactical move for later, or just an attempt for the stage win. He does take the first KOM and sprint though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bulgaria/MG16_bulgaria_5_002.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spw.png Handley and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Rybalkin cross to the break, the latter is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spw.png Konwa’s biggest rival for the KOM and obviously still wants to win it.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bulgaria/MG16_bulgaria_5_003.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/frs.png Mandri, just keeps the mountain points off pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Öste-Macdonald. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mop.png Rybalkin takes 4th and 8 points, putting him just 2 points ahead of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spw.png Konwa provisionally with 16 points going to the stage winner, either of them could win it, as well as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Antón or pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tcr.png Ito if either one takes the stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bulgaria/MG16_bulgaria_5_004.jpg

The break takes the turn off the main road and onto the climb, 20km left for them but they only have a 2 minute lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bulgaria/MG16_bulgaria_5_005.jpg

With 13km remaining, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Öste-Macdonald and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/nwb.png Vorontsov decide to attack their companions.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bulgaria/MG16_bulgaria_5_006.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/frs.png Jumabekov leads pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/frs.png Mandri, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/t3a.png Robov and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/chi.png De Leon up to the leaders but pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Öste-Macdonald attacks again! The peloton led by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/yas.png Woods, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/yas.png Tvetcov’s final teammate catches the dropped riders from the break.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bulgaria/MG16_bulgaria_5_007.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/elt.png Sella decides it’s time to go with 6km left! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Garby immediately chases him down while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Antón paces pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Salinas, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Hacecký, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/chi.png Martinez, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/nwb.png De Marchi and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lse.png De Clercq, trying to catch them, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/yas.png Tvetcov still hasn’t reacted though!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bulgaria/MG16_bulgaria_5_008.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/elt.png Sella and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Garby manage to get a small gap on the others though, which they can’t quite seem to close, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/nwb.png De Marchi has been dropped and returned to the peloton, which is led by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/nwb.png Løvik.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bulgaria/MG16_bulgaria_5_009.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Hacecký is the one to finally pull the two groups together with 3km left, but he drops pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/chi.png Martinez and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lse.png De Clercq in the process. This group has 40 seconds on the peloton containing pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/yas.png Tvetcov giving pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Antón the provisional GC lead.

This favourites group is just 20 seconds down on the break and 50 seconds behind pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Öste-Macdonald, so they still have the stage win to race for!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bulgaria/MG16_bulgaria_5_010.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Antón can’t follow the pace! He still holds the provisional lead but with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Salinas in front and just 20 seconds behind in the GC that might not last for long! This group also catches most of the break with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Öste-Macdonald the last one ahead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bulgaria/MG16_bulgaria_5_011.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Hacecký realises that this is his chance! He needs 42 seconds on pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Salinas, 1’22 on pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/yas.png Tvetcov, if he wants to win this race, and he’s not afraid to try! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/elt.png Sella is straight on his wheel and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Salinas knows he can’t miss this move as he follows as well, no reaction from pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Garby though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bulgaria/MG16_bulgaria_5_012.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/yas.png Tvetcov escapes the peloton with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/t3a.png Ivanov and catches pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Antón, he’s just 42 seconds behind pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Salinas on the road at the moment, a provisional 2 second gap on the GC!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bulgaria/MG16_bulgaria_5_013.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Garby accelerates up to the others. As pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/yas.png Tvetcov brings pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/t3a.png Ivanov up to the group pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Garby escaped, a 37 second gap between the groups now!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bulgaria/MG16_bulgaria_5_014.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Öste-Macdonald enters the final kilometre with just a 27 second gap, can he do it?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bulgaria/MG16_bulgaria_5_015.jpg

600 metres left, the lead to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/yas.png Tvetcov is now 43 seconds and the time bonuses could mean everything for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Salinas who stares down at his stem, obviously at his limit. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Hacecký still leads the group, knowing he can get a podium if they continue to distance pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Antón.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bulgaria/MG16_bulgaria_5_016.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Hacecký begins to sprint, it must be too late to catch the leader but any time could be another GC position. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/elt.png Sella moves across the road, not wanting his efforts for the stage today wasted. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Salinas has no reaction, he weaves across the road as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Garby comes past, he’s still provisional leader by just 3 seconds though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bulgaria/MG16_bulgaria_5_017.jpg

It’s hard to say why, but pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/t3a.png Ivanov is the one doing most of the work in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/yas.png Tvetcov, as they round the final corner with the leaders in their sights!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bulgaria/MG16_bulgaria_5_018.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Öste-Macdonald celebrates a great win! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Hacecký gets the bonuses for second, is it enough for the podium though? pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/elt.png Sella misses out today but at least he gets the satisfaction of beating pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Garby.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bulgaria/MG16_bulgaria_5_019.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Salinas really collapsed, as he is actually caught by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/t3a.png Ivanov, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/yas.png Tvetcov, who can now celebrate his victory and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/chi.png Martinez on the line.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bulgaria/MG16_bulgaria_5_020.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/iso.png Antón is caught by the peloton in the end, he simply followed to many attacks and blew up, losing his podium place in the process.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Bulgaria/MG16_bulgaria_5_021.jpg

Congratulations to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/yas.png Tvetcov the winner of the 2016 Tour of Bulgaria! His consistency on every stage won this race for him as he was the only favourite not to have a stage where they lost significant time.
