Today’s TT will tell us who can and who can’t really win this race. Lots of riders that have Time Trialing as one of their best skills will need to gain as much as they can on their direct rivals, some of them that will just need to try to limit losses. Dillier and Bialoblocki are the outright favorites for the stage win, but watch out for Bibby and Costa’s performances with a view to the GC.
The earliest favorite to start certainly is Bontenackels, 80th in the GC of 104, after yesterday. The German, after the 1st checkpoint, was first with a 25" margin on Hudecek, but as he crosses the finish line he increases it further to 40 seconds, being the first rider to finish with a time lower than 34 minutes - or well, in this case, 1 second below 34 minutes.
Goncalves is the first rider to set a better time than him after being behind in the 1st checkpoint. In fact, before he crossed the line with a mere second margin over the German, the former Portuguese champion was 3 seconds behind.
After him, Grivko, one of the contenders for a GC top 10, comes in 4th place even behind Würtz, his teammate, 37" behind. Next in line is Velits who is 3rd at the line 1 second quicker than Würtz.
In his beautiful Polish champion outfit, Bodnar sets a new best time after the 1st intermediate point, a huge 18 seconds faster than Bontenackels, to then lose part of that margin at the finish line. He still manages to set a new fastest time, but with "only" an 8 seconds gap on Goncalves.
His teammate and fellow compatriot Bialoblocki does even better than him however, setting a new 15" seconds faster time at the finish line, after he had gone stronger at the first checkpoint, too.
Dillier follows up in the best of ways by shattering the Poles' time. He's in the lead with a 19 seconds advantage, thus it will be really hard to get past him, even though there's still 39 more riders that still need to cross the line/take the start. He managed his energies perfectly, as he kept increasing his lead on everyone else after the first checkpoint where he also was first.
His teammate Schumacher, considered to be among the favorites for this race, sets the 7th best time on the finish line, sharing the same time as M.Velits.
It's crucial to see what Rui Costa's time is: a great TT could see him putting a lot of pressure on his rivals. He's close to crossing the line after he was 30" behind Dillier at the first checkpoint, 2/3 through the stage.
...and he crosses the line in 33'50", so not too bad considering he only lost 8 seconds from Dillier in the last third of the race. Froome, who took off 2 positions after him, is 23rd at the finish, 2 minutes behind the lead - which is terrible for his GC hopes, as he loses about 1 minute and a half to Costa. That’s going to be hard to take back in a single hilly stage which doesn't even suit him that well.
Bibby had a time 6 seconds better than Costa’s after the 1st checkpoint. He improves that at the finish line, holding the 3rd position with a gap of 8 seconds on the Portuguese, but more than 1 minute and a half on Froome. Exactly the TT he needed!
After him, the pressure is on Luis Leon Sanchez, who doesn't disappoint and stays inside of the top ten, in 8th, only 30 seconds behind Bibby: 1 minute on Froome is certainly a margin he can get behind.
A few minutes later, Gallopin is 2 seconds slower than last year's PCT dominator.
The Lithuanian Time Trial champion Navardauskas, one of many of Ferrero's GC hopes, ends up between Bibby and Costa after the 1st checkpoint, but slips behind on the finish line to finish his time trial in 6th behind the Portuguese puncheur: slightly disappointing result for him.
After that result, we can basically announce that Dillier has won the stage, as no more known time trialists need to take the start, unless a miracle happens.
It's not official until now, though: Silvan Dillier has dominated Bayern Rundfahrt's time trial and therefore jumps straight at the top of the GC standings!
