Vuelta al Pais Vasco - Stage 3

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/PaisVasco/MG16_paisvasco_3_015.jpg

Shorter stage today at 133km, also easier than yesterday, but this time there’s a tough summit finish, can pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa_rus.png Trofimov take another win?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/PaisVasco/MG16_paisvasco_3_001.jpg

It takes about 50km for the attacks to join the break to settle, surprisingly long given the short length of the stage, eventually the peloton is happy to let just three riders away:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Juul-Jensen
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Terpstra
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Marzuki
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Benito

Very surprising to see pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Juul-Jensen away, as he was an outside favourite today, but the peloton is happy to let him go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/PaisVasco/MG16_paisvasco_3_002.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Juul-Jensen is easily the strongest in the break and with 50km left he leaves his companions behind, he only has a 1 minute lead on the peloton though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/PaisVasco/MG16_paisvasco_3_003.jpg

There’s a mass crash in the peloton as 12 riders hit the ground! Including pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Claeys, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Schreurs and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Koretzky! Also on the ground are pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Boily and three pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Gazelle riders in pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Monfort, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Kangert and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl_slo.png Koren.

This crash also splits the bunch, leaving only 39 riders in the first peloton and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png De Bie is amongst the many stuck behind! As well as many other top puncheurs:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hgb.png Bilbao
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Mehr – Wenige
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd.png Kwiatkowski
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pnd.png Edmondson
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Meyer
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Izagirre
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Serry
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hgb.png Landa
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbh.png Mohoric

The leading group does not sit-up and it looks like these riders, as well as the crash victims, will have trouble catching up.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/PaisVasco/MG16_paisvasco_3_004.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Juul-Jensen is caught with 35km to go and this leading peloton has opened up a 4 minute gap on the other group, this could spell the end of the race for the riders caught behind!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/PaisVasco/MG16_paisvasco_3_005.jpg

With no-one to chase the leading peloton sits up, allowing a small group of riders including pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Claeys, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Schreurs, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Koretzky, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png De Bie, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Meyer, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd.png Kwiatkowski and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hgb.png Bilbao to return to the front group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/PaisVasco/MG16_paisvasco_3_006.jpg

With 10km remaining pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vsa.png Gastauer begins the attacks! Nobody is letting him escape though, so the bunch stays together.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/PaisVasco/MG16_paisvasco_3_007.jpg

With 5km left it’s pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Koretzky, who attacks just before the final climb! The favourites aren’t interested in him and he gets a gap!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/PaisVasco/MG16_paisvasco_3_008.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Koretzky is caught as soon as the climb begins though as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus_usa.png Van Garderen attacks! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png Hagen and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Skujins follow him immediately!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/PaisVasco/MG16_paisvasco_3_009.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/btc.png Bakelants, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa_rus.png Trofimov and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vsa.png Gastauer know this is the move that can’t be missed and join the trio! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pnd.png Lutsenko and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Kelderman also try but they can’t quite do it and get brought back by the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/PaisVasco/MG16_paisvasco_3_010.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png Hagen moves to the front and begins to set a brutal pace! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vsa.png Gastauer is the first to crack!

This group is still having trouble extending their lead on the peloton though as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Kelderman is chasing hard!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/PaisVasco/MG16_paisvasco_3_011.jpg

The leaders are on their very limit, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Skujins leads them into the final kilometre where the gradient relents a tiny bit.

The strongest rider seems to be pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Sagan though as he pulls pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pnd.png Lutsenko and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Pichon up to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vsa.png Gastauer and pursues the leaders!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/PaisVasco/MG16_paisvasco_3_012.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Skujins still leads with 500 metres left, does anybody have enough to come round him? pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png Hagen at least seems intent to try and he begins a sprint on the left of picture!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/PaisVasco/MG16_paisvasco_3_013.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Skujins is the strongest though as he takes the win! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png Hagen has to settle for second while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa_rus.png Trofimov should be happy to keep his lead in third. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus_usa.png Van Garderen edges out pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/btc.png Bakelants for fourth.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/PaisVasco/MG16_paisvasco_3_014.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Sagan must be kicking himself for missing the move given how strong he was today as he has to settle for 6th, losing 32 seconds, he leads pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vsa.png Gastauer and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Pichon before a short gap to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pnd.png Lutsenko and another gap to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Ginanni who beats pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc_aus.png Bobridge and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Meyer to 10th.
