Up and down all day today, lots of KOM points on offer before the finish halfway down the Alto de la Antigua, definitely a day for the top puncheurs like pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png Hagen and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/btc.png Bakelants are the favourites today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/PaisVasco/MG16_paisvasco_2_001.jpg

With so many mountains points on offer there’s no wonder a lot of riders want to join the break, but eventually 4 riders manage to escape the peloton:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbh.png Hansen
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vsa.png Paterski
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Mager
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Mehr-Wenige

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Mehr-Wenige is a very good puncheur, so it’s surprising the peloton is willing to let him escape.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/PaisVasco/MG16_paisvasco_2_002.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbh.png Hansen is the first over the first two climbs but on the second the pace proves too much for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Mager who returns to the peloton. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vsa.png Paterski is also in trouble, but manages to return to the group on the descent.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/PaisVasco/MG16_paisvasco_2_003.jpg

The fast descent leads to some danger in the peloton, there’s a touch of wheels and 11 riders come down including pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbh.png Mohoric, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png Dyrnes, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Monfort, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hgb.png Slagter and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Roglič. They all return to the group, except for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Monfort, who seems injured.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/PaisVasco/MG16_paisvasco_2_004.jpg

With 45km left it’s pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/btc.png Bakelants and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Gesink who hit the deck! They get back up straight away and their teammates quickly get them back to the peloton, so hopefully they’re not injured.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/PaisVasco/MG16_paisvasco_2_005.jpg

The break never really stood a chance today and are pulled back with 33km left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/PaisVasco/MG16_paisvasco_2_006.jpg

Some riders aren’t really paying attention, and when the bunch gets split with a 49 rider group in front, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vsa.png Gastauer, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Sagan, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbc.png Pichon, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Meyer, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Talansky, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Roglič, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Kangert and yellow-jersey pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Vlatos are amongst those behind!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/PaisVasco/MG16_paisvasco_2_007.jpg

With 21km remaining pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Sagan crosses groups in a show of strength, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Talansky, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Roglič pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vsa.png Gastauer and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vsa.png Goos chase and arrive seconds after. Eventually pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Gazzelle use up pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Furdi and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Koren to bring pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Kangert and a small group of big names back to the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/PaisVasco/MG16_paisvasco_2_008.jpg

Wth 20km remaining pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Juul-Jensen decides to attack! Nobody reacts in the peloton and he quickly opens a gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/PaisVasco/MG16_paisvasco_2_009.jpg

Over the next 7km pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Juul-Jensen is allowed to build up a minute lead before pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/btc.png Bakelants decides enough is enough and attacks on the penultimate climb, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa_rus.png Trofimov and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Sicard immediately follow him, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus_usa.png Van Garderen and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc_aus.png Bobridge are badly placed, letting them get a small gap before setting off in pursuit.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/PaisVasco/MG16_paisvasco_2_010.jpg

They are brought back quickly however, thanks to the chasing by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png Aasvold and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo_pol.png Poljanski, only pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Juul-Jensen remains in front with a 40 second lead and 10km to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/PaisVasco/MG16_paisvasco_2_011.jpg

The flat section before the final climb does it for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Juul-Jensen, the pack is now back together with just the Alto de la Antigua – 2.6km and 9% - left to climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/PaisVasco/MG16_paisvasco_2_012.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa_rus.png Trofimov is already provisionally second on GC, with only pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Coppel in this group ahead of him, but he wants to make that first and places an attack! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/btc.png Bakelants doesn’t give him any leeway, getting right on his wheel. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png Hagen and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Skujins, who we see for the first time today, follow immediately as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/PaisVasco/MG16_paisvasco_2_013.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc_aus.png Bobridge panics and chases bringing the group back and making it status quo once again!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/PaisVasco/MG16_paisvasco_2_014.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa_rus.png Trofimov brings us over the final climb, it looks like a sprint will decide our winner!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/PaisVasco/MG16_paisvasco_2_015.jpg

While the others try to catch their breath, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa_rus.png Trofimov makes a sneaky move on the descent, opening up a gap as he prepares for the final kilometre!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/PaisVasco/MG16_paisvasco_2_016.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/btc.png Bakelants and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Kelderman also manage to escape the group on the descent, going into the corners at a speed pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus_usa.png Van Garderen isn’t willing to match as he leads the group behind, the leaders are spaced with roughly 10 second gaps between each of them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/PaisVasco/MG16_paisvasco_2_017.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa_rus.png Trofimov takes the win and the GC lead! He has a 16 second gap before pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/btc.png Bakelants arrives, and another 10 seconds before pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Kelderman is just caught by the bunch led by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus_usa.png Van Garderen. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Boom edges out pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Ginanni for fifth and they are followed by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pnd.png Lutsenko, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Koretzky, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Sagan and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png Hagen in the top 10.
