SAA Tour d'Afrique - Stage 1
matt17br
So first stage of this is underway. The route is, uhm, flat, and the types of riders that could take this are, uhm, sprinters, particularly usual suspects pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Swift and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Degenkolb. It’s hot and wind at the start in Mauritius: it could advantage sprinters that do not suffer these kinds of conditions.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Afrique/1.png

Only pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Minnard can break away from the pack after several attempts of various groups of riders. No one has tried to join him yet, and we've gotten past the 1st intermediate sprint of the day – which he has obviously won - mind you.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Afrique/PCM0001.jpg

The situation is getting a bit out of hand maybe? Probably not considering the Dutch is on his own. But anyway, after having won both the KoM point and following intermediate sprint, Minnaard still holds a maximum advantage of 8 minutes, with about 85 to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Afrique/PCM0002.jpg

Minnaard is also in front on his own at the last intermediate sprint. With 40 to go, his gap on the peloton is still as wide as 2 minutes and a half. Hard to think he will make it surely.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Afrique/PCM0003.jpg

Eventually, the Gazelle rider gets caught, when only 5 kms and 200 meters need to be still ridden. But props to him, he still managed 150 kms on his own.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Afrique/PCM0004.jpg

With 2 to go, the situation is incredibly messy. No real trains manage to get formed because of how narrow the road is and how many riders are actually in contention of the stage, but also because of how fast the wind is blowing on Mauritius!

Pokerstars were the first to get in the front and probably managed to be the only ones to form one for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Degenkolb, while Aegon and a few others tried to do the same, without succeeding though, as they couldn't really get their riders to follow each other. Below is a more helpful explanation of what's happening.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Degenkolb is definitely the best positioned now, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Mohs doing some perfect leadout work for him as is expected. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Rowe, however, along with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Boeckmans, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Tzortzakis and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/btc.png Roelandts, is on his wheel.

A few meters behind is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Van der Sanden leading out swift, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus.png Maksimov and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbh.png Holloway also are taking advantage from his work.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Afrique/PCM0006.jpg

The German gets off his teammate's wheel and starts an absolutely impressive sprint for the power of it. With less than 100 m to go, it's hard to doubt he's going to take it.

Question right now is who will take the 2nd place, when pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Swift has also started his progression, although he’s finding a fair few sprinters following him. Among them we can clearly distinguish pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora_gbr.png Kennaugh, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbh.png Holloway and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png Kristoff. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/btc.png Roelandts and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Tzortzakis are in front of them, but don't be fooled, they don’t represent a real threat.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Afrique/PCM0007.jpg

He takes the win thanks to a perfect team effort!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Afrique/PCM0008.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Swift also had a great sprint, but lacked team support and is still a good 2nd, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora_gbr.png Kennaugh finishing in 3rd. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png Tzortzakis still holds on to a very good 4th position.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Afrique/PCM0009.jpg

It took a photofinish for 5th place but it's pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Mohs to take it! Pokerstars can be definitely satisfied with and proud of their 2 top sprinters. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/btc.png Roelandts and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbh.png Holloway follow behind for a matter of thousandths of second.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Guarnieri is 8th in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png Kristoff and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Howard who round off the top 10. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Goss was close to a top 10 today, but no cigar for him, the others were distanced a bit more visibily. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Van Stayen is an underwhelming 12th, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Van Poppel 13th, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vtb.png Appollonio 14th and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Ciolek 15th.
