The peloton lines up for a race just shy of 200km today. Hard to say the favourites with a route suiting puncheurs such as Pozzato and cobble specialists such as Thomas but there are plenty of other riders who can hope to win today.
The breakaway isn’t even formed by an attack so to speak, Stoenchev sets the pace up the first climb and anybody to stay with him were away, they are:
Milan
Stannard
Demoitie
Choe
Denz
Fonseca
Stoenchev
Bayly
Mezgec
Bøchman
Agnoli
Hategeka
Last
Vorontsov
As Last is first into the final 100km, it beings to rain. The peloton, led by Ferrero has kept the break at only 2 minutes lead and they have dropped Stoenchev, Agnoli and Hategeka. Leaving them at 11 riders.
There’s a crash in the peloton with 50km remaining, Van der Haar, Kurth and De Maar all come down, while Marcos, De Vocht, Hristov and Grashev are amongst those held up by it, leaving just 31 riders in the peloton, with a 60 rider group chasing.
The pelotons come back together with 40km left, but the increase in tempo does bring the break back.
Marcos and Hristov both come down, Marcos is quick to get up and has 4 teammates to pull him back. Hristov isn’t so lucky and it further down the road.
The peloton are moving fast and many riders can’t keep up, although Van der Haar is behind, suffering from his crash.
Marcos’ crash mustn’t have hindered him too much as he attacks! Thomas and Pozzato use this as a springboard and leave Marcos behind , while De Maar, Drucker and De Vreese all try to pace themselves up to them, but only Drucker makes it across as De Vreese hits the wall and De Maar is left in no-man’s land and eventually returns to the peloton.
The peloton increases the pace so much that only 12 riders can hang on leaving the group as:
De Haes, Mathews, Marcos
Walsleben, Kurth
Karatzios
Nardin, Grashev, Bridges
Kasperkiewicz
Lindeman, Ariesen
With 15km remaining this group is only a minute behind the trio up front.
The front group isn’t willing to collaborate however and a quick acceleration from Karatzios is enough to bring them back. The catch ensures brief moment of quiet where Palyi manages to return to the front.
With 6km left to race and approaching the final hill Pozzato decides to attack, De Haes and Mathews attempt to follow but let him go and begin to chase.
2 kilometres on and Pozzato has been caught, leaving a brief moment of calm as the riders eye each other off.
Pozzato increases the pace once again and this time he splits the group, only De Haes, Nardin, Karatzios, Thomas and Drucker are with him.
There’s no coordination however and Walsleben pulls the two groups back together as they prepare for the final cobbled sector and the final kilometre, dropping Lindeman and Palyi.
The pace is agonisingly slow as they come under the flamme rouge, Nardin leads Thomas on the left of picture, the Chiquita riders sit together next to them with no real organisation. Pozzato and Karatzios lead the group as well, with Drucker and Grashev patient behind them.
De Haes ramps up the pace with 500 metres left trying to simply outpace everyone, but Nardin keeps Thomas in prime position behind him.
But nobody can pass him, Kenny De Haes takes a great win! Nardin leads Thomas for the other two podium spots for Podium Ambition. Karatzios’ great performance earns him fourth place before Pozzato, Drucker and Grashev. There’s a small gap then to Ariesen, Kasperkiewicz and Matthews who completes the top ten.
