The last stage. Realistically, considering how the last few hills are pretty long but certainly not steep, you’d expect this to be resolved in a tight uphill sprint. Nevertheless, so many riders are close to each other in the current GC, and certainly no one of them will want to settle for the position they are holding right now.
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/alm.png Roche once again should be seen as the top favorite for a stage like this, but pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ayu.png Bibby also is in some tremendous shape of late. Outsiders such as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spy.png Hoogerland, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Roglič, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vtb.png Cataldo and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ayu.png Yates shouldn’t be discounted either, but neither should all the stage racers in the top positions.

An interesting break containing pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Jaramillo, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vad.png Omarsson, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ino.png Chawchiangkuang, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/alm.png Zielinski, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hgb.png Barbero, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/elt.png Sella, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spy.png Hoogerland and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Cuming gets formed, and many of the riders in here could be in for a great ride today.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vdc.png Petrache didn’t catch the boat at the right time, and he’s trying to join in as we near the first sprint of the day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Catalunya/PCM122.jpg

No sprint is disputed, as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Jaramillo grabs the most point right in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vad.png Omarsson and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ino.png Chawchiangkuang.

The slow pace the 7 in front are are setting, however, produces the effect of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vdc.png Petrache finally joining in. The 10 now proceed slowly but steadily, holding a 2 minutes and 30 seconds advantage on the bunch before the first KoM sprint of the day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Catalunya/PCM123.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/elt.png Sella takes the points he was looking for thanks to one of his sprints. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ino.png Chawchiangkuang is 2nd with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vdc.png Petrache ending up in 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/alm.png Zielinski is still in the lead of the KoM rankings, with 42 points and an advantage of 10 on pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Cuming.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Catalunya/PCM124.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/elt.png Sella gets first at the top again in the 2nd category ascent, in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/alm.png Zielinski - who therefore strengthens his lead – and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Jaramillo.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Catalunya/PCM125.jpg

The Italian dominates another of these sprints, and grabs a few other points to get close to the Polish leader of this specific ranking. Whilst pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/elt.png Sella can’t mathematically overtake him through the King of Mountain sprints, in fact, it’s very possible he might thanks to the points awarded at the finish.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ino.png Chawchiangkuang is 2nd, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Cuming 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Catalunya/PCM126.jpg

Meanwhile, the favorites' teams are taking turns to keep the break's advantage from rising any further. Coldeportes are certainly the most active in the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Catalunya/PCM127.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/elt.png Sella is 1st in the intermediate sprint for the green jersey, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hgb.png Barbero 2nd and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Jaramillo 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Catalunya/PCM128.jpg

Incredibly enough, for once, the Italian gets defeated in a KoM sprint today, and that’s thanks to a powerful sprint by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ino.png Chawchiangkuang. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spy.png Hoogerland gets there 3rd.

The gap between the pack and the break has now been reduced to only 1 minute with about 18 kms to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Catalunya/PCM129.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/alm.png Roche – clearly aided by the moto in front of him - attacks and swiftly joins the break in the descent leading to the last climb of the day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Catalunya/PCM130.jpg

Behind him, 7 riders try to counter, 35" behind. They’re pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/col.png Úran and his teammate pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/col.png Weber, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ssc.png Denifl, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vuk.png Nepomnyachsniy, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Contador, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Duarte and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ayu.png Bibby.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Catalunya/PCM131.jpg

As they join the 10 in front, they now form a group of 17 that is closely followed by the peloton, led by Meiji for their captain and U25 jersey wearer pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mei.png Shikai.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Catalunya/PCM132.jpg

As the final climb finally starts, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ssc.png Denifl starts to lay down a very fast pace that only 6 others can follow, and those are pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/col.png Úran, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Duarte, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Contador, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/alm.png Roche, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vuk.png Nepomnyachsniy and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/elt.png Sella.

The other 12 are caught by the peloton who is now made up of 74 riders. The lead holds a 30 second advantage on them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Catalunya/PCM133.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mei.png Shikai himself, with a little help from pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ayu.png Yates, bridges the gap, and thus the race is open again. 5 kms to go and a group of 81 is in the lead, helped by the fact that the climb really isn't hellishly steep.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Catalunya/PCM134.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vtb.png Cataldo tries to make a gap between himself and the rest, but pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Duarte has his wheel well watched. It'll be hard for this not to come down to a sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Catalunya/PCM135.jpg

We’ve gotten past the flamme rouge and Spotify manage to form a decent uphill sprint train, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spy.png Lövkvist convincingly leading out pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spy.png T.Ludvigsson and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spy.png Hoogerland who also was in the break mind you.

Now that the slopes got a lot steeper - the riders are currently facing a 700m long 10% section - the likes of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Roglič, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mei.png Ji, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Duarte, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mei.png Shikai and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ayu.png Pinot, led out by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ayu.png Yates are all in good position.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Catalunya/PCM136.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spy.png Lövkvist is doing some great job at the moment, as he takes his teammates to the very front. As it seems, however, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ayu.png Pinot is the one in the best shape as he holds the fastest speed with a handful of hundredths of meters to go only.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Catalunya/PCM137.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spy.png Ludvigsson gets off pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spy.png Lövkvist’s wheel, but pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spy.png Hoogerland can’t quite follow that acceleration, and the fact he actively participated to today’s break didn’t help for sure.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ayu.png Pinot is still in the best position, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Roglič on his wheel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Catalunya/PCM138.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ayu.png Pinot takes a 2nd consecutive win for his colors, and a great one as well, thanks to the efforts of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ayu.png Yates and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ayu.png Bibby, winner yesterday, and who still holds a podium position in the GC as we see him in this stage’s top 10.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Roglič is a good 2nd, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spy.png Lövkvist, who had to be the domestique for the other Spotify leaders, really is the best among those, in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spy.png Ludvigsson. If the European B Road Race champion had saved his energies for a sprint, he could have maybe battled with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ayu.png Pinot.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Catalunya/PCM139.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ino.png Brenes wins a sprint for 5th place that sees pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ayu.png Bibby taking 6th place in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mei.png Shikai, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spy.png Hoogerland, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vtb.png Cataldo and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ssc.png Denifl, who wraps up the top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Catalunya/PCM140.jpg

All the favourites seem to be in the group of about 50 riders who will be awarded the same time as the winner – barring bonification seconds, obviously. This means that pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/col.png Úran is sure to take the win!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Catalunya/PCM141.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ayu.png Bibby’s consistency in every single stage, as well as yesterday’s stage victory, win him the points jersey!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Catalunya/PCM142.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/alm.png Zielinski is in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/elt.png Sella by 10 points for the mountains jersey.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Catalunya/PCM143.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mei.png Shikai only just takes the youth jersey in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spy.png T.Ludvigsson.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Catalunya/PCM144.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ayu.png Ayubowan! are in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Flores and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/col.png Coldeportes, all within a minute, in the teams overall standings.
