Volta a Catalunya - Stage 4
matt17br
This might be one quieter stage on paper, as well as probably the easiest to face mentally, but don’t let yourself be fooled: there are a few ascents that are worth a lot more than your usual short speed bumps.
For that reason, while you would normally consider the likes of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/boi.png Vanoverschelde, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hgb.png Aberasturi and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/boi.png Bennett to be favourites, for this stage you might have to think again. Riders that can resist mountains and hills better such as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vtb.png Aregger and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hgb.png Tolleson might be slightly advantaged today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Catalunya/4.png

A group breaks away as soon as the racing is on and it’s made up of 3 riders: pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vuk.png Athanasiades, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vdc.png Petrache and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spy.png F.Ludvigsson.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Catalunya/PCM048.jpg

As soon as they get to the first sprint of the day they have an 8 minutes gap, and it hasn't started going down yet.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Catalunya/PCM049.jpg

At the top of the 1st categorized climb of the day their gap is now down to 6 minutes, thanks to the work of Coldeportes, particularly pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/col.png Navarro, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/col.png Henao and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/col.png Ortega.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Catalunya/PCM050.jpg

Nearing the second sprint of the day, their gap is down to 3 minutes and a half, which is not much with 50 kms to go and a 3rd category climb to face.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Catalunya/PCM051.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spy.png Ludvigsson suffers a puncture and gets dropped by the other 2. He's now closer to the pack than he is to the rest of the breakaway, following a slow assistance from his team.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Catalunya/PCM052.jpg

Somehow, however, he gets back a few kilometers later. The pace laid down by the Greek and the Romanian certainly isn't enough to get to the finish on their own. A few kms later, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vuk.png Athanasiades is first at the top of the last hurdle of the day. Their gap goes up a bit as Coldeportes ask others to collaborate to the chasing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Catalunya/PCM053.jpg

10 kms to go, the 3 have exactly a 1 minute advantage, hard to think they'll make it at this point.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Catalunya/PCM054.jpg

The pack gets under the banner indicating 5 kms to go as well, and they haven't made up too much terrain as the 3 in front are still 45 seconds ahead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Catalunya/PCM055.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vdc.png Petrache decides he's the stronger of the 3 today, and breaks away to try his own chances. Well at least he thinks so, but he really isn't as he basically gets caught a few meters later, firstly by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spy.png Ludvigsson and then by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vuk.png Athanasiades. So it looks like they’ll have to collaborate – or give the stage up - instead, as attacks just won’t work out in these conditions.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Catalunya/PCM056.jpg

3 kms to go and the first trains start forming: here's a look on who makes them up. They still have to gain 42 seconds on the break mind you, but it seems like it’s gonna be doable.

Thanks to Hugo Boss’ work more than all, and as we get past the flamme rouge the 3 are probably going to get caught.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Catalunya/PCM058.jpg

Everyone gave their all among those 3 and no one seems to have got any energy left to sprint! Behind them, especially pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hgb.png Aberasturi, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/boi.png Bennett and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vuk.png Polivoda seem to be in perfect position to start their own sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Catalunya/PCM059.jpg

All sprinters are in good position except maybe pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/boi.png Vanoverschelde. Who really never found himself well placed during this sprint. Fortunately for him, his teammate got him covered as he seems to be well positioned in this case. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ayu.png Bibby is also coming from behind, with what would seem to be the highest speed among all. Great tour so far for the Brit.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Catalunya/PCM060.jpg

But it’s pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vuk.png Polivoda who takes a fantastic win at the photofinish. He is right in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vtb.png Aregger, who came at blistering speed from behind, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hgb.png Aberasturi, who just couldn’t finish off in the best of the ways his teammates’ great work.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Catalunya/PCM061.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ayu.png Bibby is 4th, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/boi.png Vanoverschelde had one of his best sprints to finish 5th against all odds, after being blocked behind until the very last few meters. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/boi.png Bennett slips in 7th, behind a fantastically consistent pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Roglič, 6th, who proves himself a great deal for Flores.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ayu.png Gallopin, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/col.png Weber and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/alm.png Cohen round off the top 10. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ino.png Intxausti is in horrific conditions after yesterday’s crash, and crosses the line almost 4 minutes behind the main bunch. He slips more positions down from the top 10…
