Yet another crucial, defining day for the riders lining up here in Catalunya. While this is not a stage that the GC riders will need to necessarily grab the best results in, but stay certain that getting this stage wrong may once again provide unexpected circumstances. Roche is by far the favourite to take this one, but riders such as Roglič, Bibby and Hoogerland can be great in these kinds of stages, not to forget possible outsiders and riders fighting for the GC who might take advantage of the time bonuses – should the race not end in a solo, which seems unlikely because of the flat preceding the ascent that will decide the stage.
The first break is formed by only two riders that don't seem to have many chances, which is also why the group lets them go with such ease. It’s Cuming and Gkazonis in the picture below.
They are soon joined by F.Ludvigsson and Kohler, however, and they should have a slightly bigger chance right now, whilst the peloton doesn’t seem too bothered either.
F.Ludvigsson wins the first sprint of the day in front of Kohler and Cuming, not that much of a sprint was disputed.
Riders keep joining this one break as Pökälä catches up with them in the middle of the 3rd categorised climb. The Finnish powerhouse definitely makes this attempt’s chances much more realistic. The effect he produces is pretty much the contrary nonetheless, as the group starts chasing them down harder and the gap gets down by a bit, or better, it stops growing.
Cuming is in front of Ludvigsson at the top of the climb, grabbing the points belonging to them, while thanks to a great effort Zielinski sprints away from the pack, overtakes the other 3 break members and takes 3rd in the KoM ranking.
The Pole obviously is looking to snatch as many points as possible for his potential polka dot jersey, as he sprints on top of the 1st category climb and takes a good bag of points. Cuming is again in front of Ludvigsson, for 2nd and 3rd in this case though.
It's now only those 3 riders at the front, when they have a decent edge on the other 3 who are followed closely by the pack, led by the usual suspects – the Indosat domestiques.
Zielinski is first on top of a climb again, and as he sprinted he even managed to build a gap of 1 minute on the 2 that were with him until that very moment. He also is in the lead when the time for the 2nd intermediate sprint of the day comes.
The peloton, led by Arrinera throughout the last 20 kms because of some apparently not really clever tactics, catches the 3 riders that got dropped during the 2nd climb of the day, and follow it up eating up the last 2 riders that resisted to Zielinski attack.
The Polish attacker is left alone in front, pursued by his own teammates, with 38 kms to go. He holds a consistent 2 minutes and a half advantage.
He’s got a minute on the pack at the top of the 4th category climb. Only 9 kms to go for him, but don’t be fooled by the sound of it, the hilly finale means it will be incredibly tough for him to remain in the front of everyone else even at the finish line.
A group of 5 favourites, made up of Úran, Roglič, Roche, Bibby and Nepomnyachsniy, escapes and has a gap with 6 kms to go and they are the first to catch the Polish baroudeur, who basically collapsed over the last 3 kilometers or so.
Intxausti not being there is news already however, but we know he’s not particularly suited to hilly terrains and he prefers long mountains instead.
The 5 of them never seemed to have great ambitions with the group never getting caught off guard completely, and the pack catches up with them with less than 4 km to go. The climb is 2 kms long but very tough and constant, and at this point we can tell that the winner will come out of the 75 units group for sure.
Roche is the first to start a sprint, but actually struggles to get a gap himself. We haven’t even gotten past the flamme rouge mind you, so this might haven’t been timed perfectly.
The Irishman keeps going stronger and stronger however, and now manages to have at least a 10 meters gap! Certainly a diesel kind of acceleration there from Arrinera’s leader, quite unexpected knowing him.
Roglič is leading the chasing at the moment.
The rest of the favourites start their sprint now too, with a few meters to go, and Bibby seems to be very explosive today, but his teammate Yates is also there to help him presumably. Cataldo, Weber and a few others are also in good enough position to be considered still in contention.
It’s been an inhumanly close sprint, but it’s Roche who takes the honors, right in front of Bibby, on the right, and Yates on the left, so whereas it’s mildly disappointing to miss out on a win like that, 2 riders on the podium will certainly make up for the bitter taste in their mouth.
Nepomnyachsniy is 4th, thanks to a perfect finale, in front of a surprisingly good Weber and Úran. Roglič, Ji, Cataldo and Jang round off the top 10.
All the important GC contenders seem to have finished their stage with the same time as the winner, in this group of c.a. 60 men. But wait! Breaking news?! Where is Intxausti?! We hear reports that the Spanish, current race leader, was involved in a terrible fall and he seems to be mildly injured. He comes to the finish almost 3 minutes later alongside his teammates, terrible, oh so terrible news for the Indonesian team. Terrible luck for them.
