Volta a Catalunya - Stage 2
matt17br
It’s only the second day of racing, and the overall winner will not be decided by this stage alone, but man, if you don’t hang in you can easily say goodbye to the win, this being the hardest stage of the entire race. The climbers are obviously the favourites today, and the best ones here are certainly pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/col.png Úran, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ino.png Intxausti and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ssc.png Denifl. It will certainly be a good stage, though, the profile will definitely provide some great racing, that’s for sure.

A break composed by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/elt.png Ioannidis, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vtb.png Hollenstein, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mei.png Arashiro, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Pereyra, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/boi.png McKenna, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Cuming, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/alm.png Zielinski, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spy.png Faglum Karlsson and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hgb.png Barbero gets formed.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Catalunya/PCM012.jpg

The first sprint of the day is won by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vtb.png Hollenstein, in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/elt.png Ioannidis and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mei.png Arashiro.

Their advantage is getting smaller and smaller now that Valio are relaying at the front of the peloton for the current GC leader pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vad.png Paillot, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vad.png Pokala is especially very active right now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Catalunya/PCM013.jpg

Before the first category KoM sprint of Alt de Bracons starts, the pack relaxes a bit and the break’s advantage on the group is now up to 3 minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Catalunya/PCM014.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Pereyra wins the mountain sprint with ease, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/alm.png Zielinski is 2nd and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/boi.png McKenna comes in 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Catalunya/PCM015.jpg

When we approach the end of the descent the break is weakened a bit as 3 riders lose contact. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mei.png Arashiro, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vtb.png Hollenstein and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hgb.png Barbero get eaten up by the main bunch, currently made up of 77 units.

Meanwhile, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/alm.png Zielinski wins the second sprint of the day right in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Pereyra and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/boi.png McKenna. It’s currently looking like the break, at the foot of the next climb, will be caught by the group which is now trying to bridge a gap of only 1 minute.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Catalunya/PCM016.jpg

With 98 kms to go and 7 kms until the top of the climb, the break gets caught, and that’s mostly thanks to Indosat’s work, where pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ino.png Navarro and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ino.png Claerebout are controlling.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Catalunya/PCM017.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ino.png Chawchiangkuang is the first to reach the top of the climb as no one sprinted.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Catalunya/PCM018.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/boi.png Shaw manages to break away from the pack in the middle of the descent, but it doesn’t seem like they will give him much TV time, as Indosat are trying to catch him already. At the foot of the climb, however, he already has a nice advantage of c.a 50 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Catalunya/PCM019.jpg

The Irishman is caught a few minutes later in the middle of the ascent, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ino.png Chawchiangkuang single handedly relaying like a madman to fill the gap.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Catalunya/PCM020.jpg

Bank of Ireland really wants to go home with a win today, as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/boi.png Sørtveit attacks while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ayu.png Pinot and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/elt.png Sella follow closely, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vtb.png Maillet also trying a move but ending up slightly distanced by the two of them.

Before this, Indosat’s pace made it really hard for anyone to attack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Catalunya/PCM021.jpg

The duo is much stronger than the Norwegian however, and get on top of the climb having already caught and dropped him. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ayu.png Pinot wins the KoM sprint in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/elt.png Sella, while both pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/boi.png Sørtveit and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vtb.png Maillet get caught by the pack before they can actually contest a sprint for some valuable hors categorie points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Catalunya/PCM022.jpg

The peloton eventually catches up with the head of the race, in the easier part – the first one - of the descent leading to the last climb. Still 47 riders form the group that will face the final ascent in the lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Catalunya/PCM023.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ino.png Intxausti attacks and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/alm.png Roche follows as soon as the climb is on! No one tries to follow and the teams in the front of the peloton are not as strong as before, with Indosat chilling and Arrinera doing the same. No one takes the initiative for now, but this may be a mistake.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Catalunya/PCM024.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ino.png Intxausti drops the Irishman 4 kms later and goes on a solo, but he’s got 5 tough kilometers of La Molina in front of him, so managing his energies correctly will be key.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Catalunya/PCM025.jpg

A few hundreds of meters later it’s a group of 5, made up of the finest climbers in the race, to counter their move. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/col.png Úran starts it, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Contador, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ssc.png Denifl, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Duarte and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vuk.png Nepomnyachsniy follow him, he knows what he’s doing.

They are soon going to catch pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/alm.png Roche, who is certainly suffering a bit, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ino.png Intxausti is still well in front, holding a half-minute advantage on his chasers.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Catalunya/PCM026.jpg

Flamme rouge for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ino.png Intxausti! He hasn’t lost a second to the 6 of them, who have caught up with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/alm.png Roche in the meantime.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Catalunya/PCM027.jpg

No one seems to be keeping a fast, constant pace, and they still lose time from the leader, who is now 45 seconds ahead of them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Catalunya/PCM028.jpg

And he takes the win! Great stuff from the Spanish who looks set to shut up who was speculating on the reasons behind his disappointing 2015 season.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Catalunya/PCM029.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/col.png Úran wins the sprint for the 2nd place. We’ll have to see if he managed to create a gap between him and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Contador, 3rd at the line.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/avc.png Duarte and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vuk.png Nepomnyachsniy close the top 5, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ssc.png Denifl is 6th just behind them. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/alm.png Roche wasted too many energies too early, and thus he’ll have to settle for 7th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PCT/Catalunya/PCM030.jpg

A bigger group comes soon after and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ayu.png Bibby, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spy.png Lövkvist and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mei.png Ji round off the top 10.

This means pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ino.png Intxausti is safely the new race leader, in front of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/col.png Úran and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vuk.png Nepomnyachsniy, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/flc.png Contador only just manages to limit his GC distance to less than a minute from the lead, thanks to the time bonuses. Everyone else has got more than a minute to gain to the Spanish if they want to take on the GC.
