Volta a Catalunya - Stage 1

The much-anticipated Volta a Catalunya will start off with a very short prologue. The favourites for today are essentially 3: pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hgb.png Gonzalez Salas, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vad.png Paillot and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mei.png Kwok. But who knows, a GC favourite such as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/col.png Úran, one of the top stage racers under this point of view, might sneak in the battle for today’s stage, thanks to the very short route it presents, and according to this logic, so could many other riders.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mei.png Kwok is the first favourite to take the start and so far, he doesn’t disappoint. He’s first at the line with a time of 4’50”, with an advantage of 7” on the provisional 2nd pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spy.png Stenersen.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hgb.png Ligthart, also coming here with big ambitions, is provisionally 2nd. He looks a bit upset as his time is 3 seconds slower than the HKG TT Champ’s, but I certainly don’t think he should, as who came before him had a great performance.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hgb.png Gonzalez Salas is the next favourite to set off, and he sets the best time as he crosses the line. Only 1 second better than pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mei.png Kwok, but that still guarantees him a first place for now. As pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hgb.png Ligthart is also on podium, we now have 2 Hugo Boss riders in the provisional top 3.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/alm.png Bodnar is the next favourite to take off and he’s 3rd, 1 second off the second place held by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mei.png Kwok.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/col.png Aramendía is next, and he crosses the line with the same time as the Pole who came behind him. Sadly for him, the latter has been a few tenths of second faster, if not a few hundredths of second faster.

He crosses the line with the same time as the leader pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hgb.png Gonzalez Salas, but it’s the Spanish prevailing, just like in pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/alm.png Bodnar’s case before.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vad.png Paillot was too fast today and he sets an astounding time of 4’46”, which is 3” faster than the previous leading time pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hgb.png Gonzalez Salas had set. The Frenchman now has serious chances of winning this, as it’s hard to gap so much your opponents within such a short parcours.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vuk.png Nepomnyachsniy is one of the top stage racers here and starts his race quite well. He’s provisionally 8th, with a time only 7 seconds slower than pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vad.png Paillot’s.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ino.png Intxausti finishes off his short effort with a slightly worse time than the other 2 favourites who’ve taken off before him. He’s just 1 second off pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vuk.png Nepomnyachsniy’s time, still.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/col.png Úran is the last rider to take the start and he’s one of the best GC riders in the end. He’s 8th for the day, with a time just 5 seconds slower than that of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vad.png Paillot, who deservedly takes the stage officially, and 2 seconds behind pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ayu.png Bibby, the only possible threat who did better than him.

This way the Colombian, who has already won this race once as I mentioned in the preview, sends a big message to his competitors. If they want to give him a run for his money they need to try even harder. We’ll find out how much they have understood about this tomorrow already, with what is probably the hardest stage of the race. Stay tuned.
