Kuurne – Bruxelles - Kruune
ProTour Race

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/profiles/pt/pt_kbx.png

Yesterday, the cobbles season opened with the Omloop Het Niewsblad and now we are onto the Kuurne – Bruxelles – Kuurne, where pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Sam Bewley will be looking to do the double on the opening weekend of the Northern Classics.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Kuurne%20-%20Bruxelles%20-%20Kuurne/kbk_02.jpg

193 riders lined up on the start line in Kuurne, and 203km of racing lay ahead. Only 3 cobbled sections, but when two of them are the Kruisberg and the Oude Kwaremont, they aren’t exactly strolls in the park…

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Kuurne%20-%20Bruxelles%20-%20Kuurne/kbk_03.jpg

Just like the Omloop, a group of 3 riders formed the day’s break, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Juan Abenhamar Gallego Martin yet again present, along with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png Francis De Greef and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Alexander Rybakov. A further 6 riders, including pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Kristof Vandewalle, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/btc.png Patrick Olesen and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Arnaud Grand tried to join the trio off the front, but sadly the peleton felt that was too large of a group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Kuurne%20-%20Bruxelles%20-%20Kuurne/kbk_04.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Evonik, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Becherovka and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Jayco’z set themselves up on the front and set a good pace over the opening sections of the race. Approaching the La Houppe climb, the once 7 minute gap to the breakaway group was down to under 3 minutes. This break looks like it not going to be make it to halfway at this rate!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Kuurne%20-%20Bruxelles%20-%20Kuurne/kbk_05.jpg

Onto the Kruisberg, and the escapees gap was down to just 2 minutes. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pok.png Gallego Martin led the group onto the short cobbled climb, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gzl.png De Greef on his wheel. After the frantic start, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tsa.png Rybakov was not enjoying this at all, and looked to be struggling already.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Kuurne%20-%20Bruxelles%20-%20Kuurne/kbk_06.jpg

Over the same climb, the peleton began to splinter – this was just like Omloop all over again! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Jayco’z weren’t to blame this time, but instead it was pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Becherovka and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbh.png RedBull. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/azt.png Summerhill was caught out, as well as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd.png Vandenbergh and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Daniel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Kuurne%20-%20Bruxelles%20-%20Kuurne/kbk_07.jpg

It all came back together for the Oude Kwaremont, and this was when the break was caught too. But what is happening with the Commisaires car? It hasn’t come out of the gap between peleton and break before the cobbles, and it is now stuck in the way of the riders. This is a disaster, and the race organisers will take the blame if there are any crashes!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Kuurne%20-%20Bruxelles%20-%20Kuurne/kbk_08.jpg

No crashes, but the race is in pieces due to the issue with the car. Off the front is a group of favourites that is only around 40 riders strong. Many big names are present, but missing out are pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kdd.png Vandenbergh, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pum.png Daniel, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/mus.png Farrar, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/aeg.png Sbaragli and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Saber.

Present in the lead group are:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Kuurne%20-%20Bruxelles%20-%20Kuurne/kbk_09.jpg

The pace at the front is too much for some, but it is mainly the domestiques whose jobs are done for the day. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Kreder and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bud.png Havik are part of this group, and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/met.png Nolf is just hanging onto the favourites are the front. A combination of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png Aker and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Evonik are keeping the pace as high as they can on the flat run into the circuit around Kuurne.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Kuurne%20-%20Bruxelles%20-%20Kuurne/kbk_10.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpu.png Vanbilsen and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Vanspeybrouck strangely lead the peleton around the first lap of the Kuurne finishing circuit, almost pushing hard enough to kill off any chances later on. Given that other teams had domestiques to do this, it was a strange decision from the two riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Kuurne%20-%20Bruxelles%20-%20Kuurne/kbk_11.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png ATTACK BURGHARDT! 6km to go and the German do not fancy his chances in the sprint at the end. With pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbh.png Cavendish, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png Kristoff, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Kennaugh and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Rowe, as well as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Bewley, in the group, can you blame him? Sadly though, all he does is string out the pack and not manage to distance big names…

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Kuurne%20-%20Bruxelles%20-%20Kuurne/kbk_12.jpg

Flamme rouge and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Burghardt’s attack has led to him leading everyone out towards the sprint! The main men had moved up to the front, with another 10 riders or so sat behind them just out of shot. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Vanspeybrouck took over from the pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ozc.png Jayco’z man as everyone prepared to kick for the line.

The sprint is underway, with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbh.png Cavendish the first to jump. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Bewley was just behind after having to come around a slowing pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Vanspeybrouck, whilst pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png Kristoff had taken the Manxman’s wheel. Further back, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpu.png Van Asbroeck was being lead out by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpu.png Vanbilsen, whilst pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/gre.png Rowe and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Kennaugh look completely out of it towards the back.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Kuurne%20-%20Bruxelles%20-%20Kuurne/kbk_14.jpg

Less than 100 meters to go, and it looks like pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbh.png Cavendish has this. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Bewley is pushing him all the way, but pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png Kristoff is coming fast off of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbh.png Cav’s wheel! It is going to be close on the line between these three. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Van Avermaet was sprinting well for 4th place, whilst out of shot, there was a gap to the battle between pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Kennaugh and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpu.png Van Asbroeck for 5th place.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/PT/Kuurne%20-%20Bruxelles%20-%20Kuurne/kbk_15.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/rbh.png VICTORY CAVENDISH! The Manxman wins the Kruune – Bruxelles – Kuurne with a fantastic sprint to the line. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/akm.png Kristoff betters pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bec.png Bewley to second spot on the podium, and probably could have taken the win if the finish was another 50 meters further on.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/evo.png Greg Van Avermaet crosses the line in 4th, with a small gap to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/ora.png Kennaugh in 5th. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpu.png Van Asbroeck, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tif.png David, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/bpv.png Stallaert, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/azt.png Summerhill and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/pnd.png Senechal round out the Top 10, and the rest of the 19 riders from lead group crossing in the same time.
