A shorter stage at 153km with a finish on the Côte de La Redoute, today should definitely decide the race as there is only a 1 second gap between Clifford and Konwa. While Hugentobler and Bille are still around a minute behind and both are good enough puncheurs to make up that gap.
It’s also the best chance for the puncheurs to finally win a stage, so riders like Klemme, Diggle and Nzeke won’t want to throw their chance away today.
Lots of riders want to join the break but by the intermediate sprint a 4-man group has finally established itself:
De Vos
Walker
Weiss
Bøchman
None of them are well placed in the GC, so we won’t have any surprise GC contenders from the break today.
With 100km remaining Karwowski, Jung and Kamberaj decide to bridge across to the break, making it 7 riders.
The first two KOM sprints go to Kamberaj before Weiss leads them over the Redoute for the first time.
After two more sprints won by Bøchman and Weiss. De Vos decides to contest the second sprint up the Redoute. Now with 30km and 1 lap remaining, they have 3 minutes on the peloton.
With 20km to go the break has a 2’30 lead as World Cycling Centre control the pack, which is down to 69 riders with all the big names safe.
Kamberaj leads the break over the final accent of the Côte de Chambrelles and into the final 14km with a 2 minute lead. Karwowski and Jung are struggling to remain in contact.
Kinney decides it’s time to go and both Bille and Mygind follow, all three are dangers to the GC, can the other contenders afford to let them stay away?
The peloton reacts quickly, pulling them back under the 10km banner, while the break up front still has a 1’30 lead.
Kinney goes again! He knows he has to do something now if he wants a podium finish. Mygind and Bille chase again this time with Hugentobler in tow but they can’t quite catch him, despite escaping the peloton.
Clifford has no teammates left to chase and Konwa’s are at the back, but still they don’t follow the attacks and leave it up to other teams to chase.
It’s Klemme doing the dirty work and pulling the chasers back, perhaps for his teammate Park’s GC position or perhaps because no one else will. Kinney is still up the road, however.
Further up the road Bøchman attacks under the 5km to go banner, while Kamberaj can no longer follow the rest of the group. Bøchman only has 1 minute on Kinney and with the Redoute still to come, it’s anyone’s game.
Some members of the pack owe De Vreese a thank you as he single-handedly pulls back everyone except Bøchman by the base of the Redoute.
De Marchi attacks now with Hugentobler in his wheel! Kinney, Navardauskas, Lloyd and Konwa all react but Clifford has been dropped! The question remains if he can keep a podium place though!
Tough luck for Bøchman as De Marchi comes past with 500 metres left, Hugentobler is behind him, obviously in pain but knowing that every second brings him closer to the GC win!
Klemme has attacked past Kinney who has reached his limit, while Navardauskas and Bazzana pace a peloton in which Konwa, Diggle and Bille are well positioned but Clifford is in trouble!
De Marchi takes a great win! Hugentobler just beats Bøchman for second and the clock begins to count, with time bonuses he needs 47 seconds on Konwa who is well placed in a group led by Navardauskas 400 metres down the road. Further up Klemme takes 4th.
Navardauskas crosses the line, 39 seconds down on Hugentobler but there is a gap! An 11 second gap before Kinney leads the group containing Konwa over the line, will the officials count it? The result of the Benelux Tour hangs in the balance! For now it’s Bille in 7th, then Davison beating Bazzana for 8th before Diggle finishes the top ten.
Here’s Clifford crossing the line, he’s given everything today, but it looks like he has lost his podium place.
And it is Hugentobler who takes the lead off Konwa by a mere three second margin! Barring accidents tomorrow, Hugentobler has won the Benelux Challenge!
