Benelux Challenge - Stage 5
trekbmc
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Benelux/MG15_benelux_5_019.jpg

A shorter stage at 153km with a finish on the Côte de La Redoute, today should definitely decide the race as there is only a 1 second gap between pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Clifford and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spw.png Konwa. While pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spr.png Hugentobler and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpm.png Bille are still around a minute behind and both are good enough puncheurs to make up that gap.

It’s also the best chance for the puncheurs to finally win a stage, so riders like pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Klemme, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Diggle and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Nzeke won’t want to throw their chance away today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Benelux/MG15_benelux_5_001.jpg

Lots of riders want to join the break but by the intermediate sprint a 4-man group has finally established itself:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/t3a.png De Vos
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/frs.png Walker
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/chi.png Weiss
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Bøchman

None of them are well placed in the GC, so we won’t have any surprise GC contenders from the break today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Benelux/MG15_benelux_5_002.jpg

With 100km remaining pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spb.png Karwowski, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hpa.png Jung and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vdc.png Kamberaj decide to bridge across to the break, making it 7 riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Benelux/MG15_benelux_5_003.jpg

The first two KOM sprints go to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vdc.png Kamberaj before pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/chi.png Weiss leads them over the Redoute for the first time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Benelux/MG15_benelux_5_004.jpg

After two more sprints won by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Bøchman and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/chi.png Weiss. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/t3a.png De Vos decides to contest the second sprint up the Redoute. Now with 30km and 1 lap remaining, they have 3 minutes on the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Benelux/MG15_benelux_5_005.jpg

With 20km to go the break has a 2’30 lead as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png World Cycling Centre control the pack, which is down to 69 riders with all the big names safe.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Benelux/MG15_benelux_5_006.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vdc.png Kamberaj leads the break over the final accent of the Côte de Chambrelles and into the final 14km with a 2 minute lead. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spb.png Karwowski and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/hpa.png Jung are struggling to remain in contact.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Benelux/MG15_benelux_5_007.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/chi.png Kinney decides it’s time to go and both pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpm.png Bille and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Mygind follow, all three are dangers to the GC, can the other contenders afford to let them stay away?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Benelux/MG15_benelux_5_008.jpg

The peloton reacts quickly, pulling them back under the 10km banner, while the break up front still has a 1’30 lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Benelux/MG15_benelux_5_009.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/chi.png Kinney goes again! He knows he has to do something now if he wants a podium finish. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Mygind and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpm.png Bille chase again this time with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spr.png Hugentobler in tow but they can’t quite catch him, despite escaping the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Clifford has no teammates left to chase and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spw.png Konwa’s are at the back, but still they don’t follow the attacks and leave it up to other teams to chase.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Benelux/MG15_benelux_5_010.jpg

It’s pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Klemme doing the dirty work and pulling the chasers back, perhaps for his teammate pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Park’s GC position or perhaps because no one else will. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/chi.png Kinney is still up the road, however.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Benelux/MG15_benelux_5_011.jpg

Further up the road pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Bøchman attacks under the 5km to go banner, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vdc.png Kamberaj can no longer follow the rest of the group. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Bøchman only has 1 minute on pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/chi.png Kinney and with the Redoute still to come, it’s anyone’s game.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Benelux/MG15_benelux_5_012.jpg

Some members of the pack owe pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/nwb.png De Vreese a thank you as he single-handedly pulls back everyone except pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Bøchman by the base of the Redoute.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Benelux/MG15_benelux_5_013.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/nwb.png De Marchi attacks now with pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spr.png Hugentobler in his wheel! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/chi.png Kinney, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/frs.png Navardauskas, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Lloyd and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spw.png Konwa all react but pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Clifford has been dropped! The question remains if he can keep a podium place though!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Benelux/MG15_benelux_5_014.jpg

Tough luck for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Bøchman as pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/nwb.png De Marchi comes past with 500 metres left, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spr.png Hugentobler is behind him, obviously in pain but knowing that every second brings him closer to the GC win!

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Klemme has attacked past pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/chi.png Kinney who has reached his limit, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/frs.png Navardauskas and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/frs.png Bazzana pace a peloton in which pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spw.png Konwa, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Diggle and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpm.png Bille are well positioned but pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Clifford is in trouble!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Benelux/MG15_benelux_5_015.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/nwb.png De Marchi takes a great win! pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spr.png Hugentobler just beats pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Bøchman for second and the clock begins to count, with time bonuses he needs 47 seconds on pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spw.png Konwa who is well placed in a group led by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/frs.png Navardauskas 400 metres down the road. Further up pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Klemme takes 4th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Benelux/MG15_benelux_5_016.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/frs.png Navardauskas crosses the line, 39 seconds down on pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spr.png Hugentobler but there is a gap! An 11 second gap before pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/chi.png Kinney leads the group containing pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spw.png Konwa over the line, will the officials count it? The result of the Benelux Tour hangs in the balance! For now it’s pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpm.png Bille in 7th, then pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Davison beating pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/frs.png Bazzana for 8th before pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Diggle finishes the top ten.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Benelux/MG15_benelux_5_017.jpg

Here’s pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Clifford crossing the line, he’s given everything today, but it looks like he has lost his podium place.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Benelux/MG15_benelux_5_018.jpg

And it is pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spr.png Hugentobler who takes the lead off pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spw.png Konwa by a mere three second margin! Barring accidents tomorrow, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spr.png Hugentobler has won the Benelux Challenge!
