Benelux Challenge - Stage 3
trekbmc
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Benelux/MG15_benelux_3_023.jpg

This 200km stage to Walferdange is the first true chance for the puncheurs, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Klemme is the number one favourite but it’s hard to overlook pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Diggle, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Nzeke, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/nwb.png Taborre, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/yas.png Tiernan-Locke and other top puncheurs today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Benelux/MG15_benelux_3_001.jpg

Today the break gets away on their first attack, it contains:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Mraouni
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/chi.png De Haes
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spr.png Zafferani
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/elt.png Foliforov

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/elt.png Foliforov is in the break once again, to try to make up for his close run yesterday.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Benelux/MG15_benelux_3_002.jpg

4 riders come down in the pack but they’re all quickly back up and chasing, they are:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/t3a.png Stoenchev
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/yas.png Robert
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vdc.png Petrache
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spb.png Sue

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Benelux/MG15_benelux_3_003.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Clifford decides that he also wants another day in the break and chases to join the group, meaning pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png World Cycling Centre has two riders in the breakaway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Benelux/MG15_benelux_3_004.jpg

And another crash, at least these are much smaller than yesterday, but pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Diggle has come down this time, as well as:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Diggle, Gudsell
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/fnz.png Chaoufi
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpm.png Tzortzakis
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Naesen

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Xero have sent their whole team back and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/fnz.png Fox Sports have sent another four riders back so they should have no trouble getting back to the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Benelux/MG15_benelux_3_005.jpg

While a few kilometres further on another nervous crash sends pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/frs.png Pozzato down for this second time this race, this time another GC contender in pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/yas.png Tiernan-Locke crashes with him, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/yas.png Corti and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spw.png Offredo are also down.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Benelux/MG15_benelux_3_006.jpg

This is dangerous racing today as another crash brings down pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lse.png Geschke! The full list is:

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lse.png Geschke, Vervaeke
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Dahlberg
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/t3a.png Stoenchev
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/frs.png Zemlyakov
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Vachon
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Novardianto
pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png Veilleux

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Benelux/MG15_benelux_3_007.jpg

With 110km left pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vdc.png Kamberaj and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/nwb.png Løvik (out of picture) both decide that they’ll join the break once again today, who have 5 minutes on the bunch.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Benelux/MG15_benelux_3_009.jpg

The first three mountain points go to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Clifford, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/elt.png Foliforov and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/nwb.png Løvik respectively but pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Clifford easily moves into the provisional lead in the KOM standings. There are still 90km left and the break has a 4’30 lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Benelux/MG15_benelux_3_010.jpg

Despite his hard work catching the break, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vdc.png Kamberaj easily tops pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Clifford and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/nwb.png Løvik in the intermediate sprint. Just after pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Clifford gets one over pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vdc.png Kamberaj by pipping him on the line for the 4th KOM point. While pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spr.png Zafferani has been dropped from the group.

The break still has 65km and their lead has been whittled down to 3’30 by the combined work of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Kraftwerk and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Xero.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Benelux/MG15_benelux_3_011.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/elt.png Foliforov wins the penultimate mountain sprint and leads the break into the final 20km but they have a fragile lead of 1’20 on the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Benelux/MG15_benelux_3_012.jpg

Further back, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/t3a.png Thomas is one of the many riders shelled out the back of the peloton, this looks bad for his overall hopes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Benelux/MG15_benelux_3_013.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Clifford takes a leaf out of pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/elt.png Foliforov’s book and attacks his companions with 15km left, a few riders have been dropped leaving the remaining break with just pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/elt.png Foliforov, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vdc.png Kamberaj and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/nwb.png Løvik. Despite this, the break have still managed to maintain their 1’20 lead over a disorganised peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Benelux/MG15_benelux_3_014.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Xero have gotten desperate and put pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Nzeke on the front of the bunch, despite having many riders in the lead of this 53 rider bunch. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Clifford still has a minute over the rest of the break, who have 30 seconds on the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Benelux/MG15_benelux_3_015.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Clifford has to dodge round lapped riders as he tops the final categorised climb, just 8.5km and 1 hill left for him. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/vdc.png Kamberaj and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/nwb.png Løvik have dropped pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/elt.png Foliforov, a minute back, while the peloton chases 1’30 behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Benelux/MG15_benelux_3_016.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kch.png Gaimon’s in trouble, he has two teammates with him but this doesn’t look good. It’s even worse for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/cdb.png De Maar who’s further down the road, suffering from yesterday's crash.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Benelux/MG15_benelux_3_017.jpg

The peloton catches most of the break with 6km left but good news for pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Clifford, he still has a gap of 1’30!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Benelux/MG15_benelux_3_018.jpg

pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Clifford has 4km left and his lead has dropped to 1’13, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Xero don’t want this to happen and are chasing very hard at the front of the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Benelux/MG15_benelux_3_019.jpg

And pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Clifford enters the final kilometre with a 1’25 up his sleeve, he’s done it now!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Benelux/MG15_benelux_3_020.jpg

No celebration from pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Goodnews Clifford but he must be very happy with a great win.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Benelux/MG15_benelux_3_021.jpg

None of the main puncheurs have attacked but they are still looking for time bonuses in the sprint for second, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Lloyd leads pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lse.png Thill, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spw.png Konwa and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spw.png Dowling. While pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Davison leads pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/frs.png Mandri, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpm.png Bille and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/tvm.png Van der Haar. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Klemme is also leading out pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Park on the left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2016/Races/CT/Benelux/MG15_benelux_3_022.jpg

Not many changes in the order at the line, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Lloyd holds off everyone however for second, while pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lse.png Thill maintains his third place and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spw.png Dowling overtook his teammate for fourth. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/kmm.png Park manages a large acceleration into fifth, followed by pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/frs.png Mandri, pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/spw.png Konwa and pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/0r8.png Davison. pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lpm.png Bille has lost his overall lead to pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/wcc.png Clifford but finishes 9th and defends it from other challengers, while yesterday’s winner pcmdaily.com/files/Micros16/lse.png Geschke rounds out the top 10 after his fall.
