It's the first Monument of the year, Milano - Sanremo! The organizers have moved the race from the usual "Monument day", Sunday, to a Saturday this year, but the race is almost 300 km as usual.

We've seen some interesting racing in northwest Italy over the years, and we hope that tomorrow will be no different. Will there be a big bunch sprint like in the last two years, will someone attack and win solo or will we see a reduced bunch sprint this time? There are always many possible scenarios in Milano - Sanremo. Pfft

The Route

Cipressa and Poggio have proved to be decisive climbs in the past. Cipressa is 5.6 km long an averages at just over 4 %. The summit of Cipressa is reached with a little over 20 km to go, before the Poggio climb starts with 9.2 km from the finish. Poggio isn't too steep — the climb averages at 3.7 %, and has a short maximum percentage of 8 % — but after almost 300 km of racing, every vertical meter hurts. The riders will then take on a fast descent, before the last few kilometers will take place on the flat roads of Sanremo.

The Favourites

*** Alexander Kristoff, Peter Sagan, Michael Matthews
** Greg Van Avermaet, Fabian Cancellara, Nacer Bouhanni, Zdenek Stybar
* Edvald Boasson Hagen, Geraint Thomas, Fernando Gaviria, Mark Cavendish, Tony Gallopin, Arnaud Démare, Ben Swift...

(Hard to predict this race, there are many possible contenders Smile)

Just realized German TV is not showing the race in TV. Not even on esp here...

As I have only mobile internet this weekend I unfortunately can't watch it.

Can't really see an outsider winning it. Matthews, Sagan, Kristoff, Van Avermaet or Cancellara. Depends mainly on weather and pace that is ridden over Cipressa and Poggio.

He's won the race more times then most other's on the list so I think it's perfectly justified. He's still capable of sprinting with the best on a good day.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I recall only one win from him? The one were Haussler kept looking behind him like a moron or he would've won it easily.

It needs the best Cav to get over the hills, so I'd go for EBH if I were thel.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Yes, one win is more then most on the list Smile

A wins a win. Cavendish's win isn't void because Haussler messed up his sprint. He still won.

There'll be an evening summary around 7pm but that's obviously not the same. Quite a shame that not even a monument is big enough to be shown, so much for "home of cycling". Instead, they show motorcycling, grand prix of Qatar. Go figure.

I agree Cavendish will need to be at his very best to have a chance. But if he is at his very best, and gets over the hills, then I think he can still mix it with the big sprinters when he is at his best.

I agree though that they may go with EBH, although hasn't he already said he is going to focus on Paris-Roubaix? He may therefore be Cav's lead out, which would be another positive for Cavendish.

Nokere koerse, Handzame and Catalunya therefore. Gives them right to be home of cycling. Just a shame the big event is missing.

It's like if TV wouldn't show the finale in the Champions League and instead showing a amateur cup finale instead.

I might be wrong but I am pretty sure last year MSR was on German esp.

Well, I had a look at a few sports betting sites (+ PCMDaily) Pfft. At pretty much every site, Cavendish was amongst the 15 riders with the lowest odds, so I thought he could count as a third star favourite.

I agree with you a lot though. Cav has to have a great day and the race has to turn out just the way he wants if he should have any chance of winning the race.

Hoping a break wins this, tired of sprint finishes in San Remo.
