Santos Tour Down Under Preview: The Stages
Course: Slightly hilly but with a flat finish favouring a bunch sprint. But a strong breakaway group could cause a problem.
Favourites: Caleb Ewan(Orica), Wouter Wippert(Cannondale), Giacomo Nizzolo(Trek)
Course: The route to Stirling is a very popular rate amongst the race organisers, with it mainly coming down to a sprint with a uphill finish. Juan Jose Lobato took the top spot last year.
Favourites: Juan Jose Lobato(Movistar), Caleb Ewan(Orica), Ben Swift(Sky)
Course: The Corkscrew climb will be the first indication of the main riders who are looking to win this race overall.
Favourites: Rafael Valls(Lotto), Petr Vakoc(Etixx), Nathan Haas(Dimension)
Course: This stage will likely come down to another bunch sprint but with several hills to climb it could certainly shake up the GC.
Favourites: Wouter Wippert(Cannondale), Caleb Ewan(Orica), Giacomo Nizzolo(Trek)
Course: Willunga Hill is the main GC stage of the race and with just a short sprint stage to finish the day after, it will be pivotal that all the GC favourites put all their effort into the last climb, with hopes of winning the tour overall.
Favourites: Richie Porte(BMC), Julian Arredondo(Trek), Domenico Pozzovivo(AG2R)
Course: With the last stage usually being a bunch sprint, if the GC is only settled by a couple of seconds then bonus points could be vital, making a more interesting last stage.
Favourites: Giacomo Nizzolo(Trek), Matteo Pelucchi(IAM), Caleb Ewan(Orica) |

Santos Tour Down Under: Stage 1
Favourites: Caleb Ewan(Orica), Wouter Wippert(Cannondale), Giacomo Nizzolo(Trek)
Actual Results: Caleb Ewan(Orica), Mark Renshaw(Dimension), Wouter Wippert(Cannondale)
Sprints: Mountain Climb(Cat 2)(12.8km), Sprint 1(59.6km), Sprint 2(86.4km), Finish(130.8km)
Here is the start of the Santos Tour Down Under starting in Prospect.
The first and only sprint of the day was taken by Valgren, followed by B.Jan-Lindeman, with Isaychev shortly behind him with D.Wyss getting the last couple of points.
From the mountain sprint B.Jan-Lindem and Valgren form a breakaway from 110km's out.
The first sprint of the day was by Valgren comfortably ahead of B.Jan-Lindem. The last two points where to be claimed by the peloton which were claimed by Wippert just in-front of Farrar
The second sprint had the same top two but with Ewan taking the third spot.
With 30km to go the peloton are starting to bring in the break who are a minute and 58 seconds in-front. Movistar, Dimension and Trek are all pulling on the front to bring him back.
10km's on and the gap has shortened by 38 seconds to 1 minute and 20 second in-front, with the same teams pulling on the front.
Inside the last 10km the gap has shrunk to 33 seconds and the breakaway can see the peloton just around the corner with Dimension on the front.
With 6km to go the breakaway are caught and with 5km to go the peleton are starting to form sprint trains for there sprinters.
Team Dimension are out in-front with Mark Renshaw leading out Tyler Farrar with just 2km to go.
With 500m to go Farrar is in the best place still sitting on Renshaw's wheel about to launch his sprint, but closely behind him are Rojas, Henderson, Wippert, Pelucchi, Ewan and Lobato. The big shock is that Nizzolo is no where to be seen.
Farrar takes the top spot just ahead of henderson and Lobato

Santos Tour Down Under: Stage 2
Favourites: Juan Jose Lobato(Movistar), Caleb Ewan(Orica) and Ben Swift(Sky)
Actual Result Jay McCarthy(Tinkoff), Diego Ulissi(Lampre), Rohan Dennis(BMC).
The start of the second stage begins in Unley
Attacks started on the first climb on the day, and the breakaway riders are Valgren, De Backer and Vakoc.
With Valgren taking the mountain jersey yesterday he was adamant to try and get as many points today to improve his lead, which he certainly did by taking the top spot ahead of Vakoc and then De Backer.
The first sprint of the day was took by Valgren in-front of Vakoc and De Backer.
The second sprint was took by Vakoc narrowly ahead of Valgren with De Backer getting third falling behind his breakaway companions.
With just less than 60km to go Bert De Backer is left behind by his fellow breakaway riders.
With 30km to go the breakaway only have a gap of 1 minute. It is looking inevitable that they will be caught.
Just under 25km to go the breakaway is caught and the peleton have increased their pace as they are wary of attacks.
With 8km left Moreno Moser and Simon Geschke have launched an attack.
The first rider to pass under the 5km banner is Simon Geschke a few seconds ahead of Moreno Moser with Simon Gerrans slightly trailing behind, closely followed by a chasing pack of around 70 riders.
Moreno Moser and Simon Gerrans have been caught but Simon Geschke is still going strong out in-front.
Geschke has timed his attack to perfection as it looks like he'll take the stage comfortably ahead of a chasing Simon Gerrans and the peleton even further behind.
Simon Geschke takes the second stage of the Tour Down Under with Simon Gerrans second and Luis Leon Sanchez took the last bonus seconds in the peleton.

Santos Tour Down Under; Stage 3
Favourites: Rafael Valls(Lotto), Petr Vakoc(Etixx) and Nathan Haas(Dimension)
Actual Result Simon Gerrans(Orica), Rohan Dennis(BMC), Michael Woods(Cannondale)
Glenelg is the setting for the start of the third stage of the Tour Down Under.
The Breakaway was established with 15km gone. In the breakaway is De Marchi, Sutherland, Silin, De Vreese. The second and third place riders in the KoM have gotten themselves into the breakaway(Lindeman and Vakoc). But Valgren hasn't managed to get into the breakaway after trying to several times.
Lindeman has took all the points in the first sprint of the day. He narrowly beat Vakoc and Sutherland to the line.
But in the second sprint Sutherland took top spot comfortably over Lindeman and then Vakoc.
With 30km to go the gap has gone down to 1m19s. It is looking like the break will be caught before the finish.
10km's on and the gap has increased to 1m31s. If the breakaway keep a good gap between them and the peleton for the start of the climb then they could make it all the way.
Just outside the 10km's to go and Pozzovivo has made an attack. Gerrans and Geschke are stuck to his wheel. Out in-front the breakaway is seperating with Vakoc and Sutherland getting dropped.
The riders are at the bottom of the Corkscrew climb and De Marchi has placed an attack from the break as the peleton are only around the corner.
Halfway up the climb Gerrans has attacked from the peleton taking Pozzovivo, Geschke and Thomas.
With 1km of the climb left Silin is out front with De Marchi and De Vreese 9sec behind. Gerrans and Pozzovivo are a further 19sec behind. But a strong group of 9 favourites are closing in with Sky leading them up.
Simon Gerrans goes over the top of the climb first with Silin and Pozzovivo on his wheel. 11 riders are 39sec behind with the leader(Geschke) in the group.
Egor Silin has been dropped by the fron two, so it looks like they'll sprint it out as they pass under the 1km banner.
Gerrans takes the sprint ahead of Pozzovio. Luis Leon Sanchez takes third spot, sprinting ahead of 11 riders.

Santos Tour Down Under: Stage 4
Favourites: Wouter Wippert(Cannondale), Caleb Ewan(Orica GreenEDGE) and Giacomo Nizzolo(Trek).
Actual Result: Simon Gerrans(Orica GreenEDGE), Ben Swift(Sky), Giacomo Nizzolo(Trek)
The fourth stage starts in Norwood.
The breakaway has been established early with 5 riders. Geerts, Kamyshev, Serry, Pibernik and McCarthy make up the break.
Jay McCarthy comfortably took the first sprint ahead of Kamyshev and Pibernik.
But in the second sprint he was narrowly tipped to the top spot by Pibernik. Kamyshev took third.
With only 30km's left the breakaway have a solid gap of almost 2 minutes.
The KoM comes with only less than 20km's left in the stage. McCarthy takes the top spot with Serry and Pibernik closely behind him. Kmayshev takes the last spot as he is left behind by the front three.
With only 10km left the breakaway looks like it will go the distance with a gap of 1m16sec.
Serry has attacked from 5km's to go. He has distanced his breakaway companions. His gap to the peleton is 45sec.
As Serry passes under the 1km banner it looks like has judged his attack to perfection as he has a clear gap of the peleton.
Serry just managed to keep the peleton away with Lobato 2nd and Farrar 3rd.
Unfortunately it looks like Thomas and Porte's aspirations for the GC have vanished, as they crashed with just over 10km's to go and couldn't manage to get back to the peleton.
