Tour of Tasmania - Stage 2
trekbmc
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Tasmania/MG15_tasmania_2_000.jpg

Today is likely the most important stage, 170 kilometres from Penguin to the climb up Liena road. The hills today will sort out the best puncheurs and will be key to making gains or limiting losses before the time trial tomorrow. The definite favourite is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Hagen, as well as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tcs.png Trofimov and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vwa.png Claeys, although there are plenty of other riders who can win today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Tasmania/MG15_tasmania_2_001.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vtb.png Lane leads pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/boi.png Shaw and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Kratochvila over the first climb, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sui.png Hugentobler and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pro.png Lammertink are also fighting to get away behind them and they form the break of the day.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Tasmania/MG15_tasmania_2_002.jpg

We’re not 20km into the stage and already over 50 riders have been dropped. This includes both pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Kittel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ozc.png Durbridge, who both are strong time trialists.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Tasmania/MG15_tasmania_2_003.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/boi.png Shaw wins the next climb ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vtb.png Lane and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Kratochvila, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sui.png Hugentobler is just behind and trying to make the junction, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pro.png Lammertink has been caught. They now have about 5 minutes on the peloton, where pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Cancellara is the only one chasing, an interesting strategy from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Red Bull as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Skujins is 4 minutes down in the GC, so they must be targeting stage wins. The peloton has also come back together with the groups behind catching up, only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vwa.png Predatsch is still behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Tasmania/MG15_tasmania_2_004.jpg

The next mountain points go to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/boi.png Shaw but more importantly pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sui.png Hugentobler has finally caught this group. They have a 5 minute lead with 100km left.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Tasmania/MG15_tasmania_2_005.jpg

42km left and the break are within a minute, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sui.png Hugentobler dropped and caught as well. This inspires pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Paterski to attack and he is followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Pichon and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sui.png Fumeaux, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/qst.png Barbin tries to chase on a little further behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Tasmania/MG15_tasmania_2_006.jpg

The attack is brought back quickly but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Pichon and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sui.png Fumeaux are determined to go again and now catch the morning break.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Tasmania/MG15_tasmania_2_007.jpg

The peloton comes together, so pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ayu.png Kadri puts in an attack! There are still 25km to go, although half of it is downhill.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Tasmania/MG15_tasmania_2_008.jpg

20km to go and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ayu.png Kadri’s lead is out at 40 seconds! 6 riders set off in pursuit of him, including pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bac.png Bilbao, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/boi.png McCarthy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png Palini, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pnd.png Gilbert, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pnd.png Lutsenko and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mus.png Van Garderen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Tasmania/MG15_tasmania_2_009.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ayu.png Kadri leads over the final climb meaning that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vtb.png Lane wins the mountains classification but more importantly, seven riders are now chasing him, led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mus.png Van Garderen, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/boi.png McCarthy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pnd.png Gilbert, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vwa.png Flügel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Hagen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bac.png Bilbao and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Gastauer in tow and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vtb.png Di Maggio a bit further behind, just ahead of the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Tasmania/MG15_tasmania_2_010.jpg

They catch pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ayu.png Kadri and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Gastauer goes! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Hagen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mus.png Van Garderen follow him pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vwa.png Flügel also tries but can’t keep up with the acceleration and all but those three get caught by the peloton again.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Tasmania/MG15_tasmania_2_011.jpg

They reach the bottom of the final climb and 6km to go with just 30 seconds on the peloton, led by a fast chasing pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tcs.png Tinkoff team. There are still 91 riders in the peloton, with the stage really playing into the hands of time trialists and sprinters today, even the yellow jersey of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ork.png Kennaugh is within 1 minute of the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Tasmania/MG15_tasmania_2_012.jpg

5 kilometres left and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Gastauer goes for it, getting a gap on his companions.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Tasmania/MG15_tasmania_2_013.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Hagen attacks and drops pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mus.png Van Garderen, before making his way up to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Gastauer with 3km to go. Just 30 seconds behind them, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tcs.png Trofimov has finally gotten away, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ozc.png Bobridge, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sui.png Schumacher, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Skujins and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pok2.png Roche. While pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png Ponzi and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/met.png Ignatiev are just 20 seconds behind them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Tasmania/MG15_tasmania_2_014.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pok2.png Roche attacks his companions and he opens up a gap, slightly further back pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/qst.png Froome attacks and catches pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/met.png Ignatiev and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png Ponzi.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Tasmania/MG15_tasmania_2_015.jpg

The leading duo enter the final kilometre with 25 seconds on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pok2.png Roche, neither one of them wants to launch the sprint first, so pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Hagen just sets a constant tempo.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Tasmania/MG15_tasmania_2_016.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Hagen launches his sprint! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Gastauer is having trouble holding on as they enter the final 500 metres.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Tasmania/MG15_tasmania_2_017.jpg

And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Hagen easily outsprints pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Gastauer, taking the win! A really great win from him today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Tasmania/MG15_tasmania_2_018.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pok2.png Roche takes the final podium spot losing 22 seconds to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Hagen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ozc.png Bobridge takes fourth and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Skujins beats pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sui.png Schumacher and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tcs.png Trofimov for fifth, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mus.png Van Garderen is last of this group in eight.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Tasmania/MG15_tasmania_2_019.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png Ponzi finishes ninth ahead of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/met.png Ignatiev, who keeps himself within range to take the lead in the time trial, just 1’18 down on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Hagen in the general classification. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/qst.png Froome finishes just behind him, just missing out on the top ten.
