Grands Prix Cyclistes - Stage 2
matt17br
The second and last stage of the brand new Canadian stage race is underway. There’s just a big question mark that only the racing will answer: will Vink keep the lead after his bold solo? Will his 1’30” on everyone else be enough?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/GPsCanada/FavoritesStage2.jpg

Quite some time will pass until the first riders will attack. In fact, only after more than 10 kilometers after the start the first attack will be launched. 3 riders are part of this attempt, they are:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/boi.png Clarke,
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/amx.png Yemane,
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Wallays.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/GPsCanada/PCM0001.png

As we get past the first, steep climb, they’re joined by 2 others, breakaways legend pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gnu.png Del Nero and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sva.png Einsle.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/GPsCanada/PCM0012.png

The 5 of them will form the BotD, as the group doesn’t seem to be worried too much about them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/GPsCanada/PCM0013.png

Their advantage keeps rising, as there is now no-one leading the bunch. With 140 kilometers to go they can count on a gap of over 5 minutes!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/GPsCanada/PCM0021.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/GPsCanada/PCM0027.png

Few kilometers later though pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vtb.png Vontobel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rge.png Risa are back in the lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/GPsCanada/PCM0028.png

The five men in the front start struggling a bit and their pace sensibly drops. With 70 kilometers left, their advantage is now back to 3’30”. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sva.png Einsle is currently the more active among them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/GPsCanada/PCM0029.png

Fast forward about 10 kilometers and we surprisingly find a rider trying his luck. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/otp.png Julien Simon is the green-dressed rider below.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/GPsCanada/PCM0030.png

Cheeky attack they think. Why doesn't anyone follow him? And 4 more riders in fact join the Frenchman. They are:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/kar.png Gerdemann,
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/chi.png Kinney,
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/blk.png Lloyd,
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/evo.png Siskevicius.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/GPsCanada/PCM0033.png

No luck though. Soon a long train of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rge.png Risa riders appears in the front of the peloton, which means that they soon get caught.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/GPsCanada/PCM0034.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/otp.png Simon must feel very well today though, and soon launches another attack, followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/kar.png Gerdemann and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/dek.png Vastaranta. The race just exploded now, with less than 30 kilometers to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/GPsCanada/PCM0035.png

But pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rge.png Risa won’t let them go this time around either, and contemporarily show that anyone wanting to dethrone pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rge.png Vink will need to pull off something special…

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/GPsCanada/PCM0036.png

Something fairly unexpected just happened! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sva.png Sebastien Einsle just got tired of being wheelsucked! Who will relay now?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/GPsCanada/PCM0037.png

No one, apparently. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gnu.png Del Nero is in front but he isn’t making an effort as it seems. Have they given up already?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/GPsCanada/PCM0038.png

Another attack is launched! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/dek.png Jukka Vastaranta doesn’t seem to want to relay on his sprinting skills alone and carries away a 4-men group with him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ken.png Chaoufi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sbp.png Hermans and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/nns.png Sinkewitz are the three joining the Finnish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/GPsCanada/PCM0040.png

You’ve probably seen that coming already but well, I need to let you know that the peloton, which is still led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rge.png Risa – Ergon, just filled the gap with the brave quartetto and looks strong to do the same with the reminiscences of the BotD.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/GPsCanada/PCM0041.png

And in fact, there we go. With less than 20 kilometers to go, there’s just one man in the front: his name is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sva.png Sebastien Einsle.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/GPsCanada/PCM0042.png

Are we perhaps witnessing 2 break-wins out of 2 stages? The Luxembourgish is on fire today, and is just about to lap a group of 2.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/GPsCanada/PCM0043.png

There we go, just about 10 kilometers left and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pum.png Wilco Kelderman tries to kill the race! What a powerful attack that was, wow! 1 minute was separating the break and the pack and he already sensibly cut it, with 1 kilometer since his attack! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sva.png Einsle may have to say goodbye to the victory as it stands now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/GPsCanada/PCM0045.png

Another 2 kilometers pass by and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sva.png Einsle suddenly finds pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pum.png Kelderman’s silhouette beside him. He is done now, and won’t hold on with the Dutchie.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/GPsCanada/PCM0046.png

Wohooo, someone reacts to the latest attack, it was about time all in all! Although they may have missed the right boat, they can always settle for a creditable spot in the top 10. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/boi.png McCarthy is the first to escape from the pack - which is still led by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rge.png Vink’s teammates in the meantime – and he is soon followed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/evo.png LLS, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gnu.png Klemme, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gzl.png Monfort and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ken.png Ben Nasser.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/GPsCanada/PCM0048.png

But look, they are not the only ones trying to gain something on the Kiwi. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbc.png Boily first, and then pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vtb.png Di Maggio and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/nns.png Zeits try to catch up with the 6 just in front of them. Not easy at all to have a complete look on the race right now so will rather show you a brief summary of how things look at the moment:

PE6E5E4E3E2E1
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vtb.png Di Maggiopcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbc.png Boilypcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ken.png Ben Nasserpcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sva.png Einslepcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/boi.png McCarthypcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pum.png Kelderman
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/nns.png Zeitspcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gnu.png Klemmepcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/evo.png Sanchez
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gzl.png Monfort

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/GPsCanada/PCM0050.png

We’re really close to the sprint now, a last effort for everyone. What a race though! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rge.png Risa are still all in the front but no one will try to attack, helping pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rge.png Vink’s chances.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/GPsCanada/PCM0051.png

There’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pum.png Kelderman! He is really close to the finish with all the other favourites right behind him. Will he be able to keep up?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/GPsCanada/PCM0052.png

…of course he will! What a demonstration of sheer force that was! Kudos, Mr. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pum.png Wilco Kelderman. Now the question is: will this be enough for him to win the GC as well?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/GPsCanada/PCM0053.png

The sprint for the podium places is off as well. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sva.png Einsle is now behind everyone but still, this is going to be remembered as a very nice effort no matter the final result.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/GPsCanada/PCM0054.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ken.png Ben Nasser comes in 2nd after all, very nice sprint for him after starting from behind. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/evo.png Sanchez and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/boi.png McCarthy’s duel will come down to the photofinish instead, even though it looks like the Spaniard got his wheel in front of the Irishman’s for a matter of centimeters maybe.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/GPsCanada/PCM0055.png

Everyone else who was in the front previously crosses the line just now. Big favorite pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vtb.png Di Maggio is the last in the sprint and confirms that his everlasting waiting doesn’t lead him anywhere near a win… In front of him are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gzl.png Monfort, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gnu.png Klemme, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sva.png Einsle, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbc.png Boily and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/nns.png Zeits.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/GPsCanada/PCM0057.png

Top 10 is filled, who will win the bunch sprint though? It’s once again a pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pum.png Puma – SAP guy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pum.png Arnaud Demare. Sweet day for their manager I guess.

The chrono stops on the 2 minutes mark for his group: Vink has lost the race, as he needed to finish not more than 1 minute and a half behind! He got really close after his hard to believe win, but it's an equally deserved win for Kelderman, who had the best legs and the best head today. Congratulations then!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/GPsCanada/PCM0058.png

The racing is over, it’s time for the ones who got most out of these 2 days to enjoy their respective achievements.
