The second and last stage of the brand new Canadian stage race is underway. There’s just a big question mark that only the racing will answer: will Vink keep the lead after his bold solo? Will his 1’30” on everyone else be enough?
Quite some time will pass until the first riders will attack. In fact, only after more than 10 kilometers after the start the first attack will be launched. 3 riders are part of this attempt, they are:
Clarke,
Yemane,
Wallays.
As we get past the first, steep climb, they’re joined by 2 others, breakaways legend Del Nero and Einsle.
The 5 of them will form the BotD, as the group doesn’t seem to be worried too much about them.
Their advantage keeps rising, as there is now no-one leading the bunch. With 140 kilometers to go they can count on a gap of over 5 minutes!
Few kilometers later though Vontobel and Risa are back in the lead.
The five men in the front start struggling a bit and their pace sensibly drops. With 70 kilometers left, their advantage is now back to 3’30”. Einsle is currently the more active among them.
Fast forward about 10 kilometers and we surprisingly find a rider trying his luck. Julien Simon is the green-dressed rider below.
Cheeky attack they think. Why doesn't anyone follow him? And 4 more riders in fact join the Frenchman. They are:
Gerdemann,
Kinney,
Lloyd,
Siskevicius.
No luck though. Soon a long train of Risa riders appears in the front of the peloton, which means that they soon get caught.
Simon must feel very well today though, and soon launches another attack, followed by Gerdemann and Vastaranta. The race just exploded now, with less than 30 kilometers to go.
But Risa won’t let them go this time around either, and contemporarily show that anyone wanting to dethrone Vink will need to pull off something special…
Something fairly unexpected just happened! Sebastien Einsle just got tired of being wheelsucked! Who will relay now?
No one, apparently. Del Nero is in front but he isn’t making an effort as it seems. Have they given up already?
Another attack is launched! Jukka Vastaranta doesn’t seem to want to relay on his sprinting skills alone and carries away a 4-men group with him. Chaoufi, Hermans and Sinkewitz are the three joining the Finnish.
You’ve probably seen that coming already but well, I need to let you know that the peloton, which is still led by Risa – Ergon, just filled the gap with the brave quartetto and looks strong to do the same with the reminiscences of the BotD.
And in fact, there we go. With less than 20 kilometers to go, there’s just one man in the front: his name is Sebastien Einsle.
Are we perhaps witnessing 2 break-wins out of 2 stages? The Luxembourgish is on fire today, and is just about to lap a group of 2.
There we go, just about 10 kilometers left and Wilco Kelderman tries to kill the race! What a powerful attack that was, wow! 1 minute was separating the break and the pack and he already sensibly cut it, with 1 kilometer since his attack! Einsle may have to say goodbye to the victory as it stands now.
Another 2 kilometers pass by and Einsle suddenly finds Kelderman’s silhouette beside him. He is done now, and won’t hold on with the Dutchie.
Wohooo, someone reacts to the latest attack, it was about time all in all! Although they may have missed the right boat, they can always settle for a creditable spot in the top 10. McCarthy is the first to escape from the pack - which is still led by Vink’s teammates in the meantime – and he is soon followed by LLS, Klemme, Monfort and Ben Nasser.
But look, they are not the only ones trying to gain something on the Kiwi. Boily first, and then Di Maggio and Zeits try to catch up with the 6 just in front of them. Not easy at all to have a complete look on the race right now so will rather show you a brief summary of how things look at the moment:
P E6 E5 E4 E3 E2 E1 Di Maggio Boily Ben Nasser Einsle McCarthy Kelderman Zeits Klemme Sanchez Monfort
We’re really close to the sprint now, a last effort for everyone. What a race though! Risa are still all in the front but no one will try to attack, helping Vink’s chances.
There’s Kelderman! He is really close to the finish with all the other favourites right behind him. Will he be able to keep up?
…of course he will! What a demonstration of sheer force that was! Kudos, Mr. Wilco Kelderman. Now the question is: will this be enough for him to win the GC as well?
The sprint for the podium places is off as well. Einsle is now behind everyone but still, this is going to be remembered as a very nice effort no matter the final result.
Ben Nasser comes in 2nd after all, very nice sprint for him after starting from behind. Sanchez and McCarthy’s duel will come down to the photofinish instead, even though it looks like the Spaniard got his wheel in front of the Irishman’s for a matter of centimeters maybe.
Everyone else who was in the front previously crosses the line just now. Big favorite Di Maggio is the last in the sprint and confirms that his everlasting waiting doesn’t lead him anywhere near a win… In front of him are Monfort, Klemme, Einsle, Boily and Zeits.
Top 10 is filled, who will win the bunch sprint though? It’s once again a Puma – SAP guy, Arnaud Demare. Sweet day for their manager I guess.
The chrono stops on the 2 minutes mark for his group: Vink has lost the race, as he needed to finish not more than 1 minute and a half behind! He got really close after his hard to believe win, but it's an equally deserved win for Kelderman, who had the best legs and the best head today. Congratulations then!
The racing is over, it’s time for the ones who got most out of these 2 days to enjoy their respective achievements.
