Grands Prix Cyclistes - Stage 1
matt17br
It’s time for the first edition of “Grands Prix Cyclistes” to kick off! The sun is shining in the whole Quebec, and a cloud is nowhere to be seen. Nonetheless, it’s not too hot either, and the 192 at the start today will definitely enjoy their ride!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/GPsCanada/Favorites.jpg

As the jury decides it’s time to set off, 7 bold riders try their luck. They are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gnu.png Beltran, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ken.png Chaoufi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/esc.png Earle, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/chi.png Kinney, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bup.png Prades, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rge.png Vink and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gzl.png Weening.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/GPsCanada/PCM0002.png

Seven riders! Isn’t that far too much for the first stage of a 2-days stage race? Apparently not, cause they’re soon joined by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ioc.png Hardy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sbp.png Jensen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/dek.png Sarabia, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/amx.png Taborre and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Wallays and now make up a really dangerous break of 12.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/GPsCanada/PCM0003.png

Obviously the pack won’t let them go, how would they anyway? It isn’t easy as it seems though: they’re 12 in front, they can fight the group on an even footing.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/GPsCanada/PCM0004.png

Many riders try to break away from the bunch in the meantime, but none of them succeeds because of the high tempo pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/kar.png Karcher, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/afr.png Project: Africa and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/evo.png Evonik are now imposing to the rest of the peloton. The advantage of the 12 of them is always around 50” and rarely gets higher.

But it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rge.png Michael Vink who decides that they won’t go anywhere in 12! With 140 kms to go The Kiwi caught all 11 of his break mates off guard and will probably try to go the whole hog on himself.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/GPsCanada/PCM0005.png

Meanwhile, there still are riders who try to join the initial breakaway, and although some of them finally succeed, few meters later pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/afr.png Project: Africa’s domestiques bridge the gap with the men in front…

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/GPsCanada/PCM0006.png

And now the situation is the following: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rge.png Vink is still trying to go all the way on his own, but his attempt looks really really serious! With 100 kilometers to go he already estabilished an advantage of more than 3 minutes on the pack, which is now unite.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/GPsCanada/PCM0007.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pum.png Vontobel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/afr.png Africa and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/boi.png BoI are still in the front, but they are seemingly taking it easy. They don’t think that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rge.png the Kiwi will make it to the finish line… That seems odd, in fact he’s now got almost 5 minutes on them! Looks like they’re definitely underestimating the situation.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/GPsCanada/PCM0008.png

50 kilometers to go and the situation won’t change apparently, except that now pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gnu.png Domenik Klemme’s domestiques notice how dangerous it could be for them and are now en bloc in the front of the peloton. The gap is now down to 2’30”.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/GPsCanada/PCM0010.png

As pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gnu.png Grupo Nutresa is done with their work, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/boi.png BoI is back in the front, with a bit more than 25 kilometers to go. The South-American based team has achieved the desired effect as it seems, since the gap is down to less than 2 minutes…

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/GPsCanada/PCM0011.png

Is it possible that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rge.png Vink is now suffering too much? I’ll let you decide, telling you that in a 7 kilometers time, he lost 30” seconds to the group, which now looks good to catch him in the final 5 kilometers. Or not?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/GPsCanada/PCM0014.png

It might sound weird but… pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rge.png Vink now increases his tempo, and there’s no trace, no shadow of riders trying to break away from the bunch, even now that the -5 kms mark has been crossed by everyone in the main bunch.

Everyone in the group is now naively watching each other, as if they were sure of getting on the podium. Well they’re not I’m sorry to say, in fact now pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rge.png Vink increased his lead to 1’40”…

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/GPsCanada/PCM0015.png

There’s just 1000 meters in front of him now! I can’t say he’s undoubtedly going to win yet, but he would need a serious unlucky event to prevent him from kissing the girls on the podium!

But it’s now pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/afr.png Dan Craven the first – and the only – to attack before the bunch sprint! The Namibian relies on his only chance to get some bonification seconds: attacking.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/GPsCanada/PCM0016.png

But as I had already predicted, it’s about time that someone should have attacked, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rge.png Vink crosses the line for the last time! He doesn’t look that happy though, he’s definitely still suffering from the 200+ kilometers he spent in the break, first in group, then all alone. Great stuff!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/GPsCanada/PCM0017.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/GPsCanada/PCM0018.png

Meanwhile, the sprint for the 2nd place has already started behind. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/afr.png Craven is still ahead but Vontobel’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vtb.png Di Maggio, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vtb.png Gatto and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vtb.png Wyss started catching up with him but there’s just not enough distance left for them to overtake him for the 2nd place.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/GPsCanada/PCM0022.png

And in fact, nothing really changes. There is not a real sprint but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pum.png Demare, who came from behind, settles for 5th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/GPsCanada/PCM0019.png

One man didn’t finish on time today. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/dek.png Sami Tiainen is the unlucky rider who was forced to retire.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PCT/GPsCanada/PCMDNF.jpg

Now that the race is done and dusted and everyone has arrived, the Kiwi can finally enjoy his stay on the highest step of the podium.
