Tour of Northern Europe - Stage 7
matt17br
2nd day in Scandinavia for the riders, the decisive one. Probably the hardest hilly stage of the race, this one will be raced in a circuit in the southern Norway, with an outlook to the uniqueness of the Fjords, brightened by a rare sunny weather. The longest climb is 8 kilometers long, with an average slope of about 9%, with some 15% peaks as well, so not really something for the “pure” puncheurs but rather something for those that are actually used to the longer ascents.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Cancellara comes here with a solid margin over his rivals. Hopefully, this will force the GC contenders to try their luck with some attacks from far out, being this their last chance. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sui.png Schumacher and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pnd.png Gilbert should be the riders looking for this kind of move to shake the top-10 a bit, without forgetting the likes of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ozc.png Visconti, the closest to the Swiss, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png David, the U25 ranking leader.

We’ve seen who the best puncheurs in this race are in Stage 4, and they also are the same riders who could have a say today. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pok2.png Ginanni, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Gastauer and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vwa.png Claeys are the best 3 names for today, without forgetting what pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bac.png Bilbao, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png Caruso and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pnd.png Lutsenko have done. Going to be an interesting stage to watch, also considering that no breakaways made it to the finish line yet. Stay tuned.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/FavouritesStage7.png

A strong group of 11 breaks away as soon as the race starts:
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/qst.png De Gendt, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ven.png Antunes, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/btc.png Lietaer, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pro.png Walsleben, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mei.png Tatarinov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vwa.png Venter, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/kar.png Chiarello, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Polnicky, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Albert, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Porte and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tcs.png Brutt compose it.

Against all the odds, the peloton lets them go. As they are nearing the first mountain sprint, the gap is close to 5 minutes already.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S70001.jpg

After that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/qst.png De Gendt sprints to take the first 2nd category one, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Albert decides it’s time to scrape together some more points to try to force pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Stybar out of his lead.

He first takes the 3nd category one, and keeps adding up points to his ranking by dominating the next two ones as well. He can now see himself in the lead of the polka-dot ranking, with 10 points more than the former leader, and he can still extend his lead in the next 2 sprints!

The gap is now around 3 minutes, with 50 kilometers to go, however it got to touch the 9 minutes, with 110 to the finish.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S70003.jpg

40 kilometers to go, the riders are getting close to the 2nd intermediate sprint of the day and the gap is down to 2 minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S70004.jpg

The group can now see the BotD! They are just more than 1 minute behind them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S70005.jpg

Just as the pack slows down a bit, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/met.png Ignatiev tries to escape!

With 28 kilometers to go he has a good margin on the peloton, which is now made up of 62 riders. All the important names for the day and for the GC are still in there.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S70006.jpg

The Ukrainian is not the only one though. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Coppel is the first one to follow his example 3 kilometers later, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pnd.png Lutsenko and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bac.png Bilbao are like-minded.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S70010.jpg

A quick update regarding the various gaps:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S70011.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/met.png Ignatiev already caught up with the break, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Coppel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pnd.png Lutsenko are more than 1 minute behind the group of 12 in the lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bac.png Bilbao couldn’t quite manage to join the group of 2 in front of him and his gap got to almost 2 minutes, while the pack is more than 2 minutes behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S70012.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Albert gains 2 other points coming 3rd in the next 3rd category KoM, won by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/qst.png De Gendt.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S70013.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pro.png Walsleben and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vwa.png Venter go for it alone at the next climb. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tcs.png Brutt tries to follow their interesting attempt.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S70014.jpg

With just less than 10 kilometers to go, their victory hopes start to rise, as the group, pulled by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Cancellara himself for some reason I’m missing, is almost 3 minutes down.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S70015.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bac.png Bilbao gets right back into the peloton after an unsuccessful chasing attempt.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S70016.jpg

Unfortunately, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pro.png Walsleben and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vwa.png Venter couldn’t make it to the finish alone and the rest of today’s breaks gets back on them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S70017.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vwa.png Claeys is the first one to try among the favourites! It should be far too late for it, but why disdain some TV time?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S70018.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Gastauer and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Cancellara soon escape from the group too! They are not too far from the Belgian.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S70019.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Cancellara can’t keep pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Gastauer’s pace and gets dropped.

Meanwhile, Vesuvio’s puncheur got back to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vwa.png Claeys who, in turn, reached pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Coppel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pnd.png Lutsenko’s group. The 4 of them are now 1’46” behind the break: they’re probably out of the fight for the stage win.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S70020.jpg

It’s time for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/met.png Ignatiev to go on his own! 5 kilometers to go now, no one has the force to follow his wheels!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S70021.jpg

Someone is probably wondering how pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pok2.png Ginanni is doing at this point of the race. Well, he got dropped a few kilometers ago, and he is sitting in the gruppetto right behind the main bunch.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S70022.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Vanspeybrouck, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pnd.png Gilbert, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png David and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Cancellara try to go after the riders in front of them! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Spartacus basically just needs to look after them and manage his advantage. Flawless racing from his side so far.

Meanwhile it’s just 3 kilometers to go for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/met.png Ignatiev, who keeps increasing his lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S70023.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pnd.png Gilbert may have to put down the idea of a GC win but he still tries to put together as much advantage as he can over his rivals. He leaves his 3 companions alone and as he gets past the last KoM he has 30” on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Cancellara already.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S70024.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/met.png Ignatiev has passed by the Flamme Rouge with a smaller advantage on the group behind him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S70025.jpg

The current leader can’t take it too easy as they get closer and closer to him! Some of the riders have already started their sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S70026.jpg

It’s too late for them! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/met.png Ignatiev looks delighted to have taken a fantastic win, great stuff!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S70027.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/qst.png De Gendt sprints in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ven.png Antunes for 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S70028.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Polnicky is just outside of the top 3, behind him there’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mei.png Tatarinov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/kar.png Chiarello and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/btc.png Lietaer.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S70029.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Porte, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pro.png Walsleben and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vwa.png Venter close the top 10, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tcs.png Brutt and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Albert, who’ll be wearing the Orange Polka-Dot jersey tomorrow, are the last two of the breakaway group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S70030.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vwa.png Claeys is 13th, coming at 1’30” from today’s winner, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Gastauer crosses the line a few seconds after him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pnd.png Gilbert also finishes his stage and will now need to have a look to the clock to see how much time will pass until pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ozc.png Visconti & pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sui.png Schumacher’s group arrives.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S70032.jpg

With the same time, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Vanspeybrouck, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Coppel and teammate pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pnd.png Lutsenko also arrive.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S70034.jpg

Next up, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Cancellara and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png David in 19th and 20th place. They come to the finish 2’33” down from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/met.png Ignatiev but with only 34” from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pnd.png Gilbert, which means that the Swiss is, most definitely, still the race leader.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S70035.jpg

Exactly 1 minute later, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ozc.png Visconti and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pok2.png Ginanni arrive. Not a good day for both, as the first will have to say goodbye to his victory hopes and probably to his current 2nd place in the General Classification, whereas the latter only closes in 26th a stage he could have well won. Irony of fate, they cross the line together.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sui.png Schumacher, another of today’s let-downs, belongs to their very same group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S70036.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Cancellara it is! Spartacus knows he only needs to carefully take the last step before celebrating his win.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pnd.png Gilbert is lucky enough to sneak into the 2nd place, and can count on a 8 seconds advantage over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ozc.png Visconti.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Vanspeybrouck has been probably the most surprising rider so far, and he climbs 3 other positions to 4th, having pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sui.png Schumacher, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pok2.png Kluge and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png David behind him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tcs.png Gusev, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png Blythe and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pro.png Sinkeldam round up the top 10.
