Tour of Northern Europe - Stage 6
matt17br
Yesterday the riders had to face a transfer that took them from Netherlands to Denmark. Fortunately for them, this one is – hopefully – going to be a quiet one for everyone, except the top sprinters of course. 158 pan flat kilometers from Aalborg to a circuit in Silkeborg the riders will have to repeat 5 times. Don’t be fooled by those 4 KoMs, the max slopes there don’t reach 6%. Usual north European weather today is awaiting the riders, but it shouldn’t actually rain.

After what we’ve seen in stage 2, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png Guarnieri should be considered the favourite, even taking into account the strength of his teammates. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pok2.png Degenkolb also looked pretty strong, and besides these, we shouldn’t forget about the likes of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/qst.png Lo Cicero, who already proved he can sneak into the top 50 if luck is on his side.
Even pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mus.png Maksimov, who pulled an excellent sprint in stage 2 and was only stopped by picking the wrong wheel.

Sprints are never secure though, and there are so many more riders who could take the win today! Plus, who guarantees it will end up in a sprint? Might this be a day for the breakaways?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/FavouritesStage6.png

The race starts with a never-ending succession of attacks. Many groups of riders have tried to break away from the peloton, but none really succeeded because of the work done by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Red Bull, also aided by the width of the roads and the lack of turns.

The first attack to actually last for a decent amount of kilometers is attempted by a group formed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tcs.png Brutt, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pnd.png Minoungou, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Naesen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Dyrnes, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pro.png Leezer, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Stybar, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/met.png Nolf, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Schlechter and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bac.png Viviani.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S60001.jpg

They even get to stay in the lead until after the first sprint, won by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/met.png Nolf in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bac.png Viviani and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pro.png Leezer.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S60002.jpg

However the inevitable happens a few kilometers later. The sprinters’ teams are not too confident about letting such a strong group of 9 break away. 93 kilometers to go, no breaks.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S60003.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Stybar attacks before they get caught though, and therefore tries to go the whole hog on himself, or at least tries to pick up as many KoM points as possible.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S60004.jpg

The group doesn’t trust him either. Caught. We are almost halfway through the stage, with a bit more than 80 kilometers to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S60005.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png Guarnieri collects 6 points that could come in handy in the fight for the green jersey. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mus.png Maksimov gets 4 as he sprints for the second place as well. This reminds me of stage 2 somehow.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S60006.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mei.png Zaini and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bac.png Isaychev try an attack. The two of them escape with about 65 kms still to race and can currently count on a 2 minutes advantage over the pack, currently pulled by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Red Bull.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S60007.jpg

As we enter Silkeborg’s circuit, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mei.png Zaini sprints in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bac.png Isaychev to grab the first KoM points of the day. The Italian will only just win the second one as well.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S60008.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ayu.png Gautier and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/btc.png Kneisky attack. The two are both excellent rouleurs and this could make a very interesting attempt.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S60011.jpg

It doesn’t take them long to join the other 2. With 25 kms to go, this group of 4 has got 1’25” on the pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S60012.jpg

After getting 2nd by a slight margin in the previous KoM sprint, right behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ayu.png Gautier and in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mei.png Zaini, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/btc.png Kneisky decides to go all the way alone, he has the skills to do it, after all. He’ll have to face 20 more kilometers, though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S60014.jpg

The 3 behind him have given in, meanwhile. They soon get caught by the pack, who is now 1’15” behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/btc.png Kneisky.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S60015.jpg

There’s a split! 81 riders are dropped by the main bunch. All the ‘important’ riders are in the front luckily, except for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pro.png Van der Velde, who got dropped because of a fall earlier today, and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ork.png Kamyshev, who is trying to get back to the first part of the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S60016.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/btc.png Kneisky is still leading alone with 9 kilometers to go, but the advantage he now has been considerably reduced thanks to the teams at the head of the pack’s efforts. He manages to carry home a few more points for the Mountains standings, enough to make sure he’s 2nd, just 6 points behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Stybar, who has 66.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S60017.jpg

He then gets caught sooner than expected, with 7 kilometers to go.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S60018.jpg

The first trains are in the process of being formed finally!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S60019.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png Guarnieri’s train looks slightly stronger currently as both pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/qst.png Lo Cicero’s and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pok2.png Degenkolb’s trains are slipping behind a bit.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S60020.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S60021.jpg

The riders are going at crazy speeds! Some of them have even reached 81 km/h! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png Guarnieri gets out of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png Rowe’s wheels as the Brit is done with his leadout work. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ork.png Kennaugh is sitting on the green jersey wearer at the moment.

The riders are now going to face a nasty twist at a huge speed. Watch out for any mass falls.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S60022.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S60023.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png Guarnieri is doing a perfect sprint and he can count on a huge edge over anybody else with less than 100 meters to go! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mus.png Maksimov seems to be going even faster than him but on the other hand he won’t probably have enough time to overtake his rival.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ork.png Kennaugh is losing some speed, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pok2.png Degenkolb and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Kristoff are fighting for the last 2 top 5 positions most likely.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S60024.jpg

2/2 for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png Guarnieri! The Italian wins the second sprint of this year’s edition of the TONE, and secures Good Energy yet another placing on the podium. So far, if we don’t consider the time trials, they have placed at least one rider on the podium in each stage. Something noteworthy here.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S60025.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mus.png Maksimov has to be content with yet another 2nd place; just like in stage 2, the Russian was the fastest of all, but couldn’t count on a proper train and had to do wonders to even get on the podium: kudos.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ork.png Kennaugh takes 3rd and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pok2.png Degenkolb will settle for 4th once again, narrowly beating pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Kristoff.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S60027.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pok2.png Mohs holds on for 6th after being forced to be the leadout man once again. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/btc.png Roelandts is 7th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Holloway an unlucky 8th, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/kar.png Kupfernagel 9th, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mus.png Tsatevich completes the top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png Rowe is just outside of it, but he’ll be satisfied to hear he perfectly-timed led out his leader to the victory another time.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S60028.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/qst.png Lo Cicero and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ayu.png Vanderbiest keep disappointing, finishing respectively 16th and 18th. What an unlucky year for both…
