Tour of Northern Europe - Stage 5
matt17br
Last stage of the Benelux triptique is a pan flat, 25 kilometers long, individual time trial, raced in the whereabouts of 's-Hertogenbosch, North Brabant. If you want to win this race, you need the skills against the clock.

Favourites for this one are the usual suspects pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Coppel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/kar.png Fiedler and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Cancellara. The latter needs to gain as much as possible on his direct opponents, who have got the second last stage on their side, if he wants to repeat least year’s and 2011 overall wins.

The riders can breathe a sigh of relief, as they will finally be able to race under a shining sun, allegedly at least.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/FavouritesStage5.png

The first rider to set a good time is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ozc.png Ford, who has set a time really close to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tcs.png Vorobev’s, who set off after the Australian. Tinkoff’s rider is just 4 seconds behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ozc.png Ford after the first intermediate, and gets even closer after the second one, reducing it by 3 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tcs.png Vorobev completes his come back at the finish, when he sets a time 2 seconds faster than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ozc.png Ford’s, and thus settles in the current lead.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S50001.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/met.png Zmorka’s is the next interesting performance we’re following. As expected, the Ukrainian sets a new best time in the first checkpoint, going 6” faster than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ozc.png Ford there. He keeps it up until the 2nd checkpoint as well, and now has 13” on him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/met.png Metinvest’s time trialists concludes his performance in 36’23”, 16 seconds better than the current leader. Good trial for him today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S50002.jpg

Two interesting riders take off after him, and they are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Sergent and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ork.png Viennet.

They both set the exact same time as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/met.png Zmorka in the first intermediate point, but that soon changes after the second one: pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ork.png Viennet loses 6 seconds and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Sergent one more than the French.

Between the 2nd checkpoint and the finish line they set the same time again, which means that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ork.png Viennet will finish 13” behind the leader while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png the Kiwi’s time is 14” slower than the leader’s.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S50003.jpg

Next up it’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Kittel. The German champion has some real podium chances already. It looks like he’s living up to the expectations, as he sets some amazing times in the first two checkpoints. At the first one he’s 10 seconds faster than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/met.png Zmorka, and in the second one he increases his lead by 2 more seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Kittel crosses the finish line in first place, keeping the same advantage over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/met.png Zmorka, 11 seconds.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S50004.jpg

The next batch of riders is composed of 2 of the biggest favourites: in fact it’s time for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Coppel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/met.png Ignatiev to prove their skills on the road.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Coppel totally crushes pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Kittel’s first intermediate time, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/met.png Ignatiev is really close to the German. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Coppel’s advantage keeps rising at the second intermediate, too, as he’s now 16” in front of the current leader. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/met.png Ignatiev’s situation doesn’t change at all.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S50005.jpg

Here’s an overview on the first two checkpoints when only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/kar.png Fiedler and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Cancellara need to take the start, among the favourites:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S50006.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Coppel won’t take it any easier and in the last kilometers, he gains 7 more seconds on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Kittel, and eventually sets a time 23 seconds better than his! What a show of force for the French champion!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/met.png Ignatiev is hardly less so and pulls a very good last third of his time trial to finish 2nd, but with the same time as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Kittel.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S50007.jpg

Here’s the current top 10 at the finish line:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S50008.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/kar.png Fiedler is next. PCT’s TTs undisputed dominator is 2nd after the first intermediate, 7” behind the leader, however he has a great second third and recuperates 5 seconds, which means that he now is just 2 seconds behind!

But what has he done in the last part of the race is unbelievable: he is currently at the leader’s place thanks to a stunning come-back. He indeed kept recuperating after the second checkpoint as well and he’s the leader for 5 seconds! If we though that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Coppel’s performance was unbeatable, then what’s this one?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S50009.jpg

The next 4 riders are not in fight for the stage win but rather for the high top 10 spots.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tcs.png Gusev will be 38th at the end of the day, having lost 2’11” from the current leader; pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pnd.png Gilbert will finish off in 59th, 2’43” from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/kar.png Fiedler; pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pro.png Van der Velde is the worst of the 4 ending up in 73th and 3’11” behind, but will gain on other GC contenders.

Finally pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sui.png Schumacher is the best of the 4 and reinforces his top 10 spot, probably climbing the rankings as well. He will be 37th, 2 seconds faster than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tcs.png Gusev.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S50010.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Cancellara has already started but isn’t going that well currently: he was losing 39” at the first checkpoint already, and got his to 1” at the second one. Disappointing performance for the Swiss so far, who should have looked to gain as much as possible on his opponents. On the other hand he may just be looking to save some energies for the next days!

At this point, if nothing glaring happens, this might mean that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/kar.png Fiedler has won the stage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S50011.jpg

Fortunately for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Spartacus, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ozc.png Visconti is not doing too well either, and after the second checkpoint, the Italian all-rounder is losing 1’12” from his rival. This should be already enough for the Swiss Machine to gain back his leader jersey.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S50012.jpg

There we go, the first 4 of the GC are coming to the finish line. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Cancellara is the first one to conclude his time trial and he does it in 16th place, with 1’25” from pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/kar.png Fiedler.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png David comes next and finishes in 105th, more than 3 minutes and a half behind, which is about where he was aiming to end up. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Vanspeybrouck is 144th, 1 minute behind pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png David himself.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ozc.png Visconti is the last rider crossing the line for the day and he limits his losses to finish in 65th, exactly 1’30” slower than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Cancellara.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S50013.jpg

We can officially claim that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/kar.png Fiedler is today’s winner! Congratulations on narrowly beating pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Coppel and striking the rest of the opposition!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S50014.jpg

As I anticipated, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Cancellara takes his leader jersey back! Anyone else is now at least 1 minute behind him, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ozc.png Visconti being the first of his ‘chasers’. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sui.png Schumacher is now in a very good position, having limited the loss to just 1’45” before Stage 7.
