Tour of Northern Europe - Stage 4
matt17br
Stage 4 is underway. The first hilly stage will give us some more signals about how the riders feel, especially in perspective of tomorrow’s crucial ITT. Besides this, KoM points will play an important role in today’s action: there are 10, and two of them are 1st category.

Clear favourite is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pok2.png Ginanni. The Italian, riding for Pokerstars.com's colors, is by far the best puncheur here, aided by the absence of the other top names. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vwa.png Claeys, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Gastauer and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sui.png Schumacher are the other top contenders for today’s stage. The latter will need to have a good day, as he’s aiming for a good GC spot as well.

Some pouring rain is awaiting the riders: hopefully nothing nasty will happen, even though bad luck is always behind the corner with such conditions.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/FavouritesStage4.png

Let’s get it started then. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Vesuvio and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Red Bull respond to the first few attempts but eventually they let go a 6 riders group, formed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Albert, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Gjølberg, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bac.png Isaychev, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/btc.png Kneisky, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pnd.png Minoungou and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Stybar.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S40001.jpg

The riders have already gotten past the first KoM point, a 3rd category one won by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bac.png Isaychev in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Albert and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Stybar.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S40002.jpg

The same teams are still pulling the pack, but their tempo is not high currently. This implies that the gap is now up to 3 minutes.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S40003.jpg

As they’ve ridden through the 4th KoM point, the 1st category one, the organisators provide the provisional Polka-Dot jersey standings, currently topped by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Albert, winner of the latest sprint.

As you can see, it started raining quite heavily right now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S40004.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S40005.jpg

The gap has reached 7’ in the meantime. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Gjølberg and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pnd.png Minoungou got dropped from the BotD group and the leaders remain in 4, at least for the time being.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Stybar dominated the last few KoM points, and is now leading the provisional mountain standings.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S40009.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S40010.jpg

The peloton has 4 minutes from the group of 4 made up of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Albert, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bac.png Isaychev, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/btc.png Kneisky and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Stybar, and is 2 minutes down to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Gjølberg and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pnd.png Minoungou.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S40012.jpg

With 30 kilometers to go, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mei.png Ji, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/qst.png Serry and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mus.png Tsatevich try their luck.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S40013.jpg

The 3 of them have already caught the 4 in front of them, as the gap between the BotD and the peloton had already gotten down to less than 1 minute. The group is now 30” seconds away from them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S40014.jpg

The next 2nd category KoM is won by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mus.png Tsatevich in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/qst.png Serry and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Stybar. The riders still need to ride through the last 2 for the day, but this is how the ranking looks at the moment.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S40015.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S40016.jpg

The bunch is still pretty compact and none of the really important riders lost its wheels. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Vesuvio, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Red Bull and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pok2.png Pokerstars.com are taking turns at the head of it.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S40019.jpg

This is the exact moment when the 7 of them get finally caught. 23 kilometers to go, how long will it take for the next serious attack to be launched?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S40020.jpg

It will take 3 kilometers to be precise, to answer the question above. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pnd.png Lutsenko tries to escape, not before some more futile attacks are trimmed down by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Red Bull riders. Oh and it stopped raining, nice news for the riders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S40021.jpg

A group of 5 formed by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/qst.png Barbin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bac.png Bilbao, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Bystrom, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png Caruso and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mei.png Zaini attacks with 15 kilometers to go. This could well be more than just a TV-time attack!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S40025.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pnd.png Lutsenko still has a small advantage over the 5 of them as he crosses the line first at the last KoM point of the day. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bac.png Bilbao and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png Caruso break away and are 2nd and 3rd respectively.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S40026.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pok2.png Ginanni attacks! The Italian smells some danger and decides he won’t wait for the finish line to find out if it would have been better to join them or not!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S40027.jpg

He’s going impressively strong and already joined the group of 3 in front of him, just while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/qst.png Barbin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png Caruso catch pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pnd.png Lutsenko to form an interesting group of 3 at the very front. Here’s a quick sum up:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S40028.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Cancellara might be a tad too late to the party but he finally breaks away too.

The Swiss Machine is in a 3 men group with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bac.png Honkisz and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pro.png Sinkeldam, and he’s forced to do all the work, to at least go after the group of 9 in front of them, which contains some quite interesting names, like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vwa.png Claeys, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pnd.png Gilbert, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sui.png Schumacher, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ozc.png Visconti and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Gastauer.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S40029.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pok2.png Ginanni led his group to the head of the race! The favourite is acting like a favourite and is doing everything, literally, on his own. What a show-off!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Gastauer’s group is not that far either, while it looks like pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Cancellara might have lost more than a few seconds. Things aren’t looking good for his Blue Jersey, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ozc.png Visconti is in the group right in front of him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S40032.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bac.png Bilbao is pretty active today and tries his luck as well. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pok2.png Ginanni tries his best to get back on his wheels as soon as possible.

Fact is that, as it stands, he doesn’t even have to try: he just makes it seem so easy! 3 kilometers to go, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Gastauer’s group gets closer and closer, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pok2.png Ginanni is still pulling like a madman. Will he pay for his efforts eventually?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S40034.jpg

The riders have already left the Flamme Rouge behind them, indicating that there’s less than 1 kilometer left! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pnd.png Lutsenko looks to be the one with the most energies in the tank, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png Caruso is sitting on his wheel waiting for the right moment to start his sprint.

Don’t discount pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pok2.png Ginanni yet though, he might just be waiting for the final meters to use all his energies! Also pay attention to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Gastauer, who left his group alone in the attempt of going for the win, aware that they would have had a hard time closing the gap. Watch out for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mei.png Zaini and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bac.png Bilbao, possibly caught off guard by the sprint starting too early.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S40037.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pok2.png Ginanni patiently waited for the right moment and he’s leading again! Same can’t be said for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pnd.png Lutsenko, who blew all his energies too early and is slowly slipping behind.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Gastauer though! Look at his impossible come back, it could even be that he completes it, who knows, odds are not that high at all. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png Caruso is still there for the win, so take a close look at him too.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S40038.jpg

…but there can only be one winner, and that is gonna be pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pok2.png Francesco Ginanni! Epic last 15 kilometers by today’s favourite, who takes a highlight win.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Gastauer comes close, but will have to settle for 2nd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S40039.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png Caruso is photofinish 3rd, yet another podium finisher for Good Energy! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pnd.png Lutsenko is just behind him in 4th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bac.png Bilbao concludes an active stage in 5th, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mei.png Zaini is 6th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S40040.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vwa.png Claeys, one of the favourites, is just 7th, having missed the right boat.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S40041.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sui.png Schumacher grabs a solid 8th, right in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ozc.png Visconti, who’ll have to wait for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Cancellara to see if he will wear the Blue leader jersey; pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pnd.png Gilbert closes the top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Bystrom takes a more than decent 11th, a surprising pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png David snatches the 12th, which could get him into the provisional top 5.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/qst.png Barbin is 13th, while an even more surprising pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Vanspeybrouck is 14th in their same group, which is far higher than expected for him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pro.png Van der Velde is 15th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S40042.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pro.png Sinkeldam and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ven.png Kruijswijk, who were in Cancellara’s group until the last very few kilometers, respectively are 16th and 17th.

More importantly, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tcs.png Gusev outsprints pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Cancellara for 18th after coming from far behind. The two of them come 1’12” after pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ozc.png Visconti’s group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S40043.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pok2.png Ginanni can finally enjoy his majestic win!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S40044.jpg

“The two of them come 1’12” after pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ozc.png Visconti’s group.”
Means that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ozc.png Visconti is the new GC leader! The Italian now counts on a 13” lead on an overperforming pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Vanspeybrouck, and of 20” over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Cancellara. Nonetheless, it’s to be expected that the Swiss will gain it back after tomorrow’s TT, although the Italian ain’t too shabby against the clock either.
