It’s cobbles time! Probably the most important stage of the 8, this is one is definitely going to tell us who can win the race and who can’t. Cancellara is probably the biggest favourite today, but beware of Burghardt should he feel well, and of a good-looking Blythe. Vanspeybrouck is also an outside bet, seeing the support cast he can count on!
Usual grey sky up Northern Europe, as always the riders should expect some rain to fall at some point, however I’m personally hoping it’ll be saved for the final 50 kilometers if you know what I mean.
And off we go. Gaudin is the first one to escape from the pack.
Many riders are trying to join him, but unfortunately, Red Bull is going at most of them inexplicably fiercely.
Nonetheless, that doesn’t forbid De Vreese to join the man at the front as they calm down a bit, 20 kilometers later.
Eventually a Russian-speaking group of 2, made up of Lagkuti and Sulimov, joined the 2 of them, forming a definitive BotD of 4 riders. All of this happens when the riders already rode through 40 of the 190 kilometers for the day, which is quite a record.
Sulimov comes first in the only KoM sprint for the day for a matter of centimeters, in front of Gaudin, De Vreese and Lagkuti, who won’t get any points out of it.
The gap has reached 7’ with 110 kilometers to go. Not like the peloton is actually worried about the head of the race.
It’s already down to 4 minutes when we are close to the first sprint.
De Vreese comes in first. Behind him, there’s Sulimov, Lagkuti and Gaudin.
A foretaste of what the riders will have to face today has now been faced by the pack as well; it will still take a good 40 kilometers for the riders to come to today’s focal point though.
De Vreese also tops the second sprint intermediate, which comes just before the first – and longest – cobbled sector. Lagkuti comes just behind him this time around, while Gaudin is 3rd and Sulimov 4th.
The 4 of them delve into the “cobbles jam” with 2 minutes over the peloton, pulled by Swisscom.
Lagkuti doesn’t show a real gift for riding cobblestones and gets dropped with 39 kms to go. Now there’s just 3 at the front.
A 1 minute gap is opened between a group of 20, which includes all of today’s favourites luckily, and some bigger groups. This is exactly what the teams at the front were expecting to obtain!
The break is resisting the bunch’s comeback tooth and nail; although they know their fate, they’re trying to symbolically stay in the lead of today’s stage as long as possible. Kudos.
Cancellara shortly gets in front of the pack, probably to test how his legs feel. Spartacus has already been left without teammates, unlike most of his contenders. He never needed them anyway.
A strong group of 10 behind the favourites’ doesn’t feel like giving up just yet. Among the riders in it there’s Franzoi, Kluge, Stallaert, Teunissen and Vanbilsen.
Schumacher just got dropped! No luck this time either for the all-round German powerhouse. Really bad news for him, who was highlighted as one of the riders to watch out for the overall standings.
Less than 20 to go and the main group has filled the gap dividing them and the BotD. There’s now a group of 18 riders at the front.
Wyss is strugglingly trying to get his captain Schumacher back to the leaders’ group but his effort isn’t achieving the desired effect, and therefore the two of them are about to get caught by Franzoi’s group, who has little chances to get back to the head themselves with just 10 kms to go: they’re 2’30” behind indeed.
Finally there’s some movement at the front! Vanspeybrouck is the first one to make a move unleashing a powerful attack, but Cancellara clearly isn’t caught off guard and he goes after him.
Behind the duo, a group of 3 made up of Zepuntke, Kamyshev and Blythe got formed. It seems like the latter is the more motivated out of the 3 of them to catch the leaders.
Nothing is moving behind them.
The group of 13 they escaped from isn’t led by anyone until Kruijswijk and Visconti try their luck.
Cancellara and Vanspeybrouck can count on a good lead over Zepuntke and Kamyshev, but not on Blythe, who has left his companions alone and is closing on them.
Here’s a quick overview. Blythe has basically reached the lead, while the other 2 are 30” behind now. Just 6 kilometers to go!
Blythe got there eventually! The Brit, who can probably count on a better sprint, will have to try to rest up and save some energies.
Vanspeybrouck has been the only one relaying so far, Cancellara isn’t taking turns and is a bit cowardingly wheelsucking his way to the final sprint…
The sprint is off! Cancellara looks way stronger than both at the moment and in a matter of seconds, he got his wheels in front of Vanspeybrouck’s, who is also at risk of a comeback by Blythe.
Spartacus delivers! Fabian Cancellara takes an undisputed victory! Blythe is 2nd, which means that in the last 2 days Good Energy riders have stood on every single step of the podium; fantastic race for them so far. Vanspeybrouck will heartbreakingly have to settle for 3rd, after having spent so much effort into his attempt.
Zepuntke is a good 4th, while Kamyshev will have to take a 5th. Visconti saves OZ’ day and comes 6th.
Nolf sprints in front of Kluge and Thwaites – yup, another Good Energy guy - for 7th. Havik closes the top 10.
Quiet day for one of today’s biggest names, Burghardt, who doesn’t attack and only finishes 11th, right in front of Senechal, Stallaert and Sinkeldam. Their group crosses the line 1’51” later than today’s winner, which is important for the GC.
Gusev finishes 15th in their same group. The Russian might have wanted to limit his losses even more, considering the disappointing TTT by his team, but he’s probably fine with it. Also note that Schumacher made a wonderful comeback to finish 28th, in the same group as the riders named above; bodes well for tomorrow’s Ardennes stage to say the least!
Cancellara expectedly also takes the GC leader jersey, however will he keep it until the end is the question.
