Tour of Northern Europe - Stage 3
matt17br
It’s cobbles time! Probably the most important stage of the 8, this is one is definitely going to tell us who can win the race and who can’t. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Cancellara is probably the biggest favourite today, but beware of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ozc.png Burghardt should he feel well, and of a good-looking pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png Blythe. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Vanspeybrouck is also an outside bet, seeing the support cast he can count on!

Usual grey sky up Northern Europe, as always the riders should expect some rain to fall at some point, however I’m personally hoping it’ll be saved for the final 50 kilometers if you know what I mean.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/FavouritesStage3.png

And off we go. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ayu.png Gaudin is the first one to escape from the pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S30001.jpg

Many riders are trying to join him, but unfortunately, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Red Bull is going at most of them inexplicably fiercely.

Nonetheless, that doesn’t forbid pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png De Vreese to join the man at the front as they calm down a bit, 20 kilometers later.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S30002.jpg

Eventually a Russian-speaking group of 2, made up of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/met.png Lagkuti and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tcs.png Sulimov, joined the 2 of them, forming a definitive BotD of 4 riders. All of this happens when the riders already rode through 40 of the 190 kilometers for the day, which is quite a record.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S30003.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tcs.png Sulimov comes first in the only KoM sprint for the day for a matter of centimeters, in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ayu.png Gaudin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png De Vreese and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/met.png Lagkuti, who won’t get any points out of it.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S300301.jpg

The gap has reached 7’ with 110 kilometers to go. Not like the peloton is actually worried about the head of the race.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S30004.jpg

It’s already down to 4 minutes when we are close to the first sprint.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S30005.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png De Vreese comes in first. Behind him, there’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tcs.png Sulimov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/met.png Lagkuti and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ayu.png Gaudin.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S30006.jpg

A foretaste of what the riders will have to face today has now been faced by the pack as well; it will still take a good 40 kilometers for the riders to come to today’s focal point though.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S30007.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png De Vreese also tops the second sprint intermediate, which comes just before the first – and longest – cobbled sector. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/met.png Lagkuti comes just behind him this time around, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ayu.png Gaudin is 3rd and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tcs.png Sulimov 4th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S30008.jpg

The 4 of them delve into the “cobbles jam” with 2 minutes over the peloton, pulled by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sui.png Swisscom.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S30009.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S30010.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/met.png Lagkuti doesn’t show a real gift for riding cobblestones and gets dropped with 39 kms to go. Now there’s just 3 at the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S30011.jpg

A 1 minute gap is opened between a group of 20, which includes all of today’s favourites luckily, and some bigger groups. This is exactly what the teams at the front were expecting to obtain!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S30013.jpg

The break is resisting the bunch’s comeback tooth and nail; although they know their fate, they’re trying to symbolically stay in the lead of today’s stage as long as possible. Kudos.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Cancellara shortly gets in front of the pack, probably to test how his legs feel. Spartacus has already been left without teammates, unlike most of his contenders. He never needed them anyway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S30014.jpg

A strong group of 10 behind the favourites’ doesn’t feel like giving up just yet. Among the riders in it there’s pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mei.png Franzoi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pok2.png Kluge, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Stallaert, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ven.png Teunissen and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/qst.png Vanbilsen.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S30015.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sui.png Schumacher just got dropped! No luck this time either for the all-round pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sui.png German powerhouse. Really bad news for him, who was highlighted as one of the riders to watch out for the overall standings.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S30016.jpg

Less than 20 to go and the main group has filled the gap dividing them and the BotD. There’s now a group of 18 riders at the front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S30017.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sui.png Wyss is strugglingly trying to get his captain pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sui.png Schumacher back to the leaders’ group but his effort isn’t achieving the desired effect, and therefore the two of them are about to get caught by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mei.png Franzoi’s group, who has little chances to get back to the head themselves with just 10 kms to go: they’re 2’30” behind indeed.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S30019.jpg

Finally there’s some movement at the front! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Vanspeybrouck is the first one to make a move unleashing a powerful attack, but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Cancellara clearly isn’t caught off guard and he goes after him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S30020.jpg

Behind the duo, a group of 3 made up of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vwa.png Zepuntke, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ork.png Kamyshev and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png Blythe got formed. It seems like the latter is the more motivated out of the 3 of them to catch the leaders.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S30022.jpg

Nothing is moving behind them.

The group of 13 they escaped from isn’t led by anyone until pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ven.png Kruijswijk and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ozc.png Visconti try their luck.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S30023.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Cancellara and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Vanspeybrouck can count on a good lead over pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vwa.png Zepuntke and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ork.png Kamyshev, but not on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png Blythe, who has left his companions alone and is closing on them.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S30024.jpg

Here’s a quick overview. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png Blythe has basically reached the lead, while the other 2 are 30” behind now. Just 6 kilometers to go!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S30026.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png Blythe got there eventually! The Brit, who can probably count on a better sprint, will have to try to rest up and save some energies.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Vanspeybrouck has been the only one relaying so far, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Cancellara isn’t taking turns and is a bit cowardingly wheelsucking his way to the final sprint…

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S30027.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S30028.jpg

The sprint is off! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Cancellara looks way stronger than both at the moment and in a matter of seconds, he got his wheels in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Vanspeybrouck’s, who is also at risk of a comeback by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png Blythe.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S30030.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S30031.jpg

Spartacus delivers! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Fabian Cancellara takes an undisputed victory! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png Blythe is 2nd, which means that in the last 2 days Good Energy riders have stood on every single step of the podium; fantastic race for them so far. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Vanspeybrouck will heartbreakingly have to settle for 3rd, after having spent so much effort into his attempt.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S300311.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vwa.png Zepuntke is a good 4th, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ork.png Kamyshev will have to take a 5th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ozc.png Visconti saves OZ’ day and comes 6th.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/met.png Nolf sprints in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pok2.png Kluge and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png Thwaites – yup, another Good Energy guy - for 7th. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pro.png Havik closes the top 10.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S30032.jpg

Quiet day for one of today’s biggest names, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ozc.png Burghardt, who doesn’t attack and only finishes 11th, right in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pnd.png Senechal, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bpo.png Stallaert and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pro.png Sinkeldam. Their group crosses the line 1’51” later than today’s winner, which is important for the GC.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S30036.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tcs.png Gusev finishes 15th in their same group. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tcs.png The Russian might have wanted to limit his losses even more, considering the disappointing TTT by his team, but he’s probably fine with it. Also note that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sui.png Schumacher made a wonderful comeback to finish 28th, in the same group as the riders named above; bodes well for tomorrow’s Ardennes stage to say the least!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S30037.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Cancellara expectedly also takes the GC leader jersey, however will he keep it until the end is the question.
