Tour of Northern Europe - Stage 2
matt17br
pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/qst.png Lo Cicero, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pok2.png Degenkolb, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pok2.png Mohs and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png Guarnieri are the favourites for today’s sprinters’ fest. 186 mostly flat kms from Armagh to Dublin, with 2 KoM points just to assign the first Polka-Dot jersey. Who will get there first in the end?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/FavouritesStage2.png

The first riders to break away are pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Bystrom, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Hnik and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/btc.png Lietaer.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S20001.png

They’re joined by pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ork.png Andersen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mei.png Franzoi, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ayu.png Gaudin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tcs.png Vorobev soon after.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S20002.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Bystrom attacks near the first KoM point and is the provisional leader in the ranking at the moment. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Hnik and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ayu.png Gaudin are 2nd and 3rd.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S20003.png

It just started to rain on the race, and all but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Bystrom and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Hnik are caught by the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S20004.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Bystrom wins the 2nd KoM sprint as well and will wear the Polka-Dot jersey tomorrow. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Hnik came second again while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mus.png Rojas is 3rd. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png The Norwegian will lead the ranking with 10 points, 4 more than pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Hnik, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ayu.png Gaudin and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mus.png Rojas Gil got themselves 1 point each.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S20005.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mus.png Rojas and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/met.png Burke have joined the two of them after having attacked on top of the 2nd climb, and will form today’s definitive breakaway.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S20006.png

The gap is constantly floating around 2 minutes and a half in the last few kilometers. 130 kilometers to go, and most of the time we can find pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sui.png Swisscom, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png Good Energy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/qst.png Quickstep’s domestiques relaying.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S20007.png

The highest gap between the BotD and the bunch is reported when there still are 100 kilometers to go: it only touches the 4 minutes milestone, which is a bit unusual. The teams at the front are being cautious today, after they’ve experienced too many break wins in the first quarter of the season.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S20008.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Bystrom is leaving the crumbs to his breakaway companions. He wins the intermediate sprint and grabs 6 points, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/met.png Burke comes in 2nd and gets 4. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mus.png Rojas is 3rd for a matter of few inches, and gains 2 points.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S20009.png

With 40 kilometers to go, the fast men’s teams start to set a really high tempo. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png Good Energy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/qst.png Quickstep are there for pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png Guarnieri and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/qst.png Lo Cicero, while in the last few kilometers pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pok2.png Pokerstars.com started to show up in the front as well. They already cut down the gap to less than 1 minute.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S20011.png

The break kept fighting until 10 kilometers to go, when pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Bystrom and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Hnik got caught. This doesn’t mean that no one is in the front now, though: in fact, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/met.png Burke and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mus.png Rojas haven’t given in yet, as they are still holding an advantage of over 30” over the pack.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S20012.png

With less than 9 kilometers to go, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mus.png Rojas opens a decent gap between himself and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/met.png the Brit. The latter is going to be caught soon most likely.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S20013.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S20014.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mus.png Rojas will now need to do something special to stay in the front until the end, but we can already see that he’s struggling to lay down the same pace as before.

And indeed, he hangs in until 5.5 to go, when the pack finally recaptures him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S20015.png

The trains start to be formed and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/qst.png Quickstep stand out as they have built a really interesting one; pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/qst.png Lo Cicero has 0 excuses now.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S20016.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S20017.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png Good Energy have possibly formed an even stronger one, just as the men in blue start to struggle a bit, now that pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/qst.png Wippert is in front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S20018.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pok2.png Mohs and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pok2.png Degenkolb are coming from behind at light speed, which means that the latter will make the sprint and the first will just lead him out. The two of them were worryingly nowhere to be seen until a few seconds ago and they are now quickly making their way to the very front.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S20019.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/btc.png Roelandts

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S20020.png

Shots fired! Each men has now only his lead-out in front of him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pok2.png Degenkolb though has left pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pok2.png Mohs’ wheels already: may this be a tad too early?

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S20021.png

Where did pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Kristoff just come from? The Norwegian has already started the sprint, having to deal with an unlucky positioning. He’ll hardly keep this speed until the finish line, but he’s by far the fastest currently.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S20022.png

All the lead-outs are done with the dirty work and their leaders now need to play their cards well. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png Guarnieri and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/qst.png Lo Cicero are the fastest now, but the latter is now forced to give his all, seeing how his teammates left him some positions behind. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/kar.png Kupfernagel and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mus.png Maksimov especially are in his very same situation but nothing is lost yet, everything can still happen. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Kristoff can probably be counted out of the fight for the win already, as he’s visibly losing speed.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S20023.png

Few meters to go and it now looks like these 3 will be contending for the win! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pok2.png Degenkolb, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png Guarnieri and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png Rowe have got quite a margin by now, and it will hardly be bridged by anyone. It’s odd to see that the latter still has any energies at all to sprint, after having spent quite a lot leading out his captain.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S20024.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S20025.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png Guarnieri seems like he has an edge over the other 2 but it’s also true that we might have talked too early; pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mus.png Maksimov is literally flying there!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S20026.png

…but it’s too late for anyone to deny a win to the Italian! pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png Jacopo Guarnieri wins the second stage of the TONE after an amazing teamwork by his teammates!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S20027.png

Good Energy was really close to a 1-2 with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png Rowe but pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mus.png Maksimov was quick enough to snatch the 2nd place. The Russian has really managed an astounding sprint. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pok2.png Degenkolb is just 4th after going for it a bit too early, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/qst.png Lo Cicero a bitter-sweet 5th after a load of 50ths; pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/btc.png Roelandts grabs a photo-finish 6th in front of pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/kar.png Kupfernagel, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Holloway, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ork.png Kennaugh and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/qst.png Van Asbroeck, who makes it 2 in the top 10 for Quickstep.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/TONE/S20028.png

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Kristoff is 11th after a bad positioning, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ayu.png Vanderbiest picks up another heavily disappointing result and comes just behind him in 12th.
